OK, so for the first time in my LIFE I am going on vacation to a faroff place. It is a cruise for homeschoolers and there are quite a few of them on here.

Well, trying to meet up with people you know online, and asking around if anyone is going, is not that safe. Sorry, internet paranoid.

Purposely meeting with someone you only know online isn't safe, but I don't see the harm in asking whether anyone else is going on a homeschool cruise, as long as she doesn't reveal the actual name of it - which she hasn't done.

I think what you've done is perfectly fine. However, it wouldn't probably be safe to say the exact name of the cruise you're going on...
