Chatterbox: Down to Earth

Debates, anyone? Someone

Debates, anyone? Someone can suggest a controversial topic, and we'll begin! But no choosing topics where everyone gangs up on one or two people, that always makes me feel bad. Let's do something original!

Please be sensitive about politics and religion. Those topics have not worked out so well.

How about universal healthcare?

Hm... debates are really fun, in my opinion, but I don't know much about universal healthcare. I guess I'll just have to skip this debate.

I know very little about that topic, so... I'll stay away. It'll probably lead to a discussion of politics, which I strongly dislike discussing.

Okay, this is techincally a comment, and while I am commenting I will just say my opinion which is that if you want to debate, I can think of many better places to do so than this site. It's disrupting and annoying. But you will say I do not have to click on the thread if I don't like it, so I will not. Thank so, and I am sorry if this offended anyone. We can debate on the merits of Chatterbox debating if you like. :)

Like I said on an earlier debate thread, I'm going to sit out.

Right... a debate of universal healthcare probably would lead to a debate about polotics, which I definitely wouldn't want to take part in... and 2 people have already said they don't know enough about it to debate on it. Global Warming would be fine (I myself can't decide wetheror notI believe in it or not, so I couldn't really participate, but it would be fun to read, and i might be able to make a decision), but people say the ones in the past have gotten really heated... Still, it hasn't seemed to make us like each other any less. The major reason not to do it would be that no one would probably dare to talk about it. The last time someone mentioned it, everyone seemed too scared to post. The meaning of life might be okay... but I think life has several different meanings! I bet i'd end up agreeing with nearly everyone, and I bet some others would, too! Besides, it sounds like something that would become a religeous debate. I don't think that's a good idea; it might hurt someone's feelings.

Maybe a debate on the merits of Chatterbox debating isn't a bad idea... I think that we should start with one, and then, when it's over, we stop debating here (if there are too many good reasons not to debate here) or decide on a new topic (if there are too many good reasons why we should be able to debate here if we want to). If that's okay with everyone else, I'll begin.

I don't think there's any reason not to debate here as long as we don't get too heated. If we start yelling at each other, or calling names, or insulting someone else's beliefs, then we'd need to stop. However, that's almost never happened here. The only times I can recall when it has happened was in debates over books (Eragon, Twilight, etc). If we were going to do a book debate, it probably would be in BaB instead of DtE. I don't know about the other people here, but I always try to respect everyone else's opinions when I'm debating, even though I obviously don't agree. You say there are plenty of other places to debate. Where, exactly? True, I can always debate with my dad, but 99% of the time, he ends up either A: falling asleep in the middle of it and refusing to continue it later until I'm in the worst mood possible for debating, or B: sensing there's no way he can win and telling lies (that he can read minds, for example, or that he's met an alien) and using them as evidence for his side of the story.. What's the fun in that? And if you mean other websites, I'm only allowed to chat on them if they're moderated. And if you mean a debate club, I don't have time for one. And if you mean a debate class at school, it's summer. You might not understand why we want to debate in the first place, so I'll try to explain. Debating helps you understand someone else's point of view. It helps you learn more about the world. And sometimes, it's just fun. I can't really describe the feeling, but it's really nice to prove to someone that your belief is not ridiculous - especially if people at school are prone to make fun of you for your opinions, something which happens to me all the time :(. If you don't enjoy debating, you don't have to do it. We'ren't trying to make you. It's just that I think that those of us who want to debate should be able to debate. I understand that we often soil other threads unexpectedly. However, this is a debate thread! We made it for debating, and I think we have the perfect right to use it. We're not going to cover the Chatterbox with it! One little thread can't cause any harm, can it?

I don't know. Can we avoid comments like this, though? (the authors of these posts are anonymous here)

"Lastly, viruses were created to mutate and so survive. "

Let's start with that. We'll ignore the created part, as evolution has nothing to do with the origins of life.

a Virus mutates. and then splits in two. then those mutate and split and those mutate and split and those mutate and split and those mutate and split and those mutate and split and those mutate and split and those mutate and split and those mutate and split and those mutate and split and those mutate and split and those mutate and split and those mutate and split and those mutate and split and those mutate and split and those mutate and split

This repeats itself about 10 times. Or:

THE CHICKEN God made the chicken and the Rooster and they had the egg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Or even:

Final[ly] someone RATIONAL on this thread, besides me.

Those are examples of how not to post when you are debating. If we can try to be polite and not repetative, and not use too many exclamation points, perhaps this might work out.
