How are you

Chatterbox: Down to Earth

How are you

How are you guys doing with the social distancing thing? I'm homeschooled, so there's not much change for me, but the school in my town has been closed and we don't really go anywhere any more.

Oof. I'm homeschooled too, so not a lot has changed, but my best friend comes over a lot, so it sucks that we have to stay away from each other now. We talked over video chat today though. I think video chatting is a pretty good way to stay in touch with your friends if you can't see each other in person. Classes at my taekwondo school got canceled, and I had a lot of friends there who I'll miss while coronavirus is going around. My rescue dog Casey is really anxious lately, and I think it might be because everyone in the house is anxious-- I read that dogs can kind of sense when people are anxious (but idk how true that is). It's been suggested that playing an instrument is a good way to keep yourself from going insane while you're stuck at home. So I guess I can practice my solo for my ukulele class's recital in April... if the recital isn't canceled. Though it might get canceled-- they're saying online that the coronavirus outbreak might last until summer. That would STINK! I'm curious, though, what have you other CBers been doing to keep from going stir crazy? I need ideas! I've been learning digital art, video chatting with friends, reading Ranger's Apprentice (I'm on book 10), writing short stories, and making pinback buttons for my online art store.

I'm not homeschooled, and a lot of people in our district don't have access to a computer at home, so we're not doing online school. Here in Seattle, school is cancelled for 6 weeks. We are getting our homework over email. I really miss school and seeing all my friends. My friends and I videochat twice a week and we email a lot more. We are making powerpoints about strange animals to share with each other. I am having trouble not going stir-crazy! Some things I do are read, bikeride, videochat, homework, piano, chill with my catto, and sometimes I go hang out with my friends in person, because my parents are still okay with me being outside with people. I wish I could show you the grocery store shelves! Bread and pasta aisles are WIPED CLEAN!!!! It's crazy. But hey, at least we have enough toilet paper! Although video chatting with my friends is fun, it doesn't completely fill the space that was school. At school, it was seeing people in the halls and just saying hello that I liked. That's a lot harder now.

I’m homeschooled too, so I’m not effected badly.  The schools and librarys have closed down where I live.  I have a lot of books at home so I have enough to read.  All my activities (dance class, Aikido, orchestra, violin lessons) have been canceled and I miss seeing my friends a lot.  Violin lessons and dance classes have kept going using Zoom.  But it’s not the same as seeing people in person.

Mostly I’ve been spending my time homeschooling, reading, writing, practicing and listening to music.  Sometimes I just sit and do nothing.  My family take daily walks, it’s really nice getting outside and it helps me deal with the ongoing virus situation.  I listen to a lot of music by the Okee Dokee Brothers.  They write bluegrass/folk music about the outdoors.  I enjoy listening to them a lot.  I email and write to my friends, so we stay in touch.

We’ve been doing okay.  I hope it’s the same for everyone else.  Hopefully things will come back to normal soon.

I live in Pennsylvania, and all the schools in my state have closed for at least two weeks, but it will probably end up being longer. My school started giving assignments online yesterday, but they don't take up a lot of time, and for now teachers aren't really grading anything. I was in the school musical, but two of the preformances were postponed. The Tang Soo Do studio I go to closed, and so did the library. I've been using my extra time to get started on some fun projects. I started training my pet mice, which is fun, and my mom and I are planning to plant a new garden in our backyard. Grocery store shelves are emptier than usual, but we can still get what we need. I text with my friends, and I hope to maybe facetime with them later today. I'm doing well, but I hope the situation gets better for everyone soon.

My school is starting online next week so I've just been chilling. Drawing, reading, watching youtube, and all that. The library's closed and I kind of wanted a book but I'll just have to wait, I guess. The weather has been so wierd for the last couple of days. On Monday, it was warm and sunny, on Tuesday, it was lightly snowing but it warmed up and melted. Yesterday was really warm and sunny and today, the first day of spring, I looked outside and it looked like a winter wonderland. I'm so confused.

I am homeschooled too, so not much of a difference really. I do video chat my BFFs every other day and we started a book club so we can chat over the phone about the books we read! The book we are all reading is Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo.

I also started doing online classes! I did one about the stock market, and soon I will be doing one about stop motion. I had never done an online class before, so the experiance was interesting. Also, we spend a good amount of time cleaning the house. The libraries are closed (thank goodness I checked out a BUNCH of books). We are taking advantage of the time that the grocery stores stay open by going once a week and stocking up on a few things. The store we go to (Costco) has limited things like eggs, milk, sugar, flour, all the basic cooking/baking supplies TO 1 per person per day!! It is really upseting.

For the times that we are not homeschooling, we have a 'I'm Bored' list of things we can do that do not involve screens/interacting with other people. Does anyone want me to post it on this thread?

Here is the 'I am Bored' list I use:

~Write a letter to friends

~Do a puzzle (my family has TONS of puzzles. More than we know what to do with!)

~Read books

~Go for a walk (that always helps me clear my head)

~Write a short story/novel

~Organize my room

~Go for a bike ride

~Play a game with siblings/parents/by yourself

~Do a craft (I am doing something called a Latch Hook kit, so I work on that)

~Listen to a podcast (if you can)

~color/sketch

~Draw in a coloring book

~I have some Legos that me and my siblings play with so: Play Legos

Okay, that is what I have so far! I hope that this helped!

Seems like most of you are homeschooled, so I'll put in my public-schooler's two cents.

My state's governor has cancelled in-person school for the rest of the year. So that means all the seniors can't graduate, or go to prom, or see any of their underclassmen friends before they move away to college. All the people-- including me-- doing AP (college credit) testing at the end of the year are going to have subpar scores due to the lack of in-person teaching. Some classes are just nearly impossible to continue online, such as my engineering class. I'm supposed to be building a bridge out of balsa wood, but instead, I'm sitting here and staring at a wall. Additionally, I'm used to being out of my house for more than 7 hours a day, plus travel time, extracurricular activities, clubs, etc. Now I'm spending that time at home, since I can't leave. I don't consider myself to be a very social person, but not seeing all my friends-- heck, even just a variety of people!-- every day is really taking a toll. And then there's all my acquaintances-- the people I know at school, but aren't close enough to want to video chat or text with. I miss them, too. So if y'all are just taking a week or two off, instead of the whole rest of the year-- please, spend time with those people. Because you never realize how much time you have left until it's gone.

My school is cancelled for 6 or more wekks, and I really miss my friends (i videochat with them A LOT) but it's mainly the social interactions with acquaintances that I miss. So, I really get what you mean.

Starseeker, I totally get what you mean. My public school is out for 3 weeks as of right now, but I might also have the rest of the school year off if things dont get better. I am praying so hard that that doesn't happen, because 1. I'm gonna get so bored staying at home all the time, not having different experiences, and 2. I already miss seeing my friends and acquaintances in person, plus my crush is moving to ANOTHER COUNTRY this summer, so if school is canceled for the rest of the year, I'll never see them agaaiiiiin!! Actually though, it's kinda nice reading, doing art, and playing with my dog, although I know I'll get bored with it after awhile.

I'm not homeschooled. I didn't expect to miss school a ton, but I'm already bored. Only one of my close friends has a phone, so there's that. I have been emailing them though.

My school is doing an online school. Last week we didn't have much work, though, and this week was supposed to be spring break anyway. I was looking forward to spring break, but now I don't have much to do other than schoolwork.

My school is only closed for 3 weeks for now, but I think it will be more. I really hope it's not for the rest of the school year. I have friends in 8th grade (I'm in 7th), and it would be really sad not to really be able to see them again.

Anyway, that's kinda my life right now!

I'm also homeschooled, so not much has changed except that all my dance classes and church and stuff are cancelled. I might be weird, but I don't mind the social distancing much. Actually, I'm quite enjoying it. I already don't have a social life and since all my friends live pretty far from me I don't see them much anyway. And being the introvert that I am, staying home for days on end with nowhere I have to go is kind of my dream. So I'm really just chillin' and enjoying being the hermit that I am.
