Chatterbox: Down to Earth

To help earth

To help earth

This thread is to talk about all the downfalls of earth and resources we can donate to help with those situations. These resources include donations to help homeless people, pollution, LGBTQIAP+ rights, and so much more. You can post tactics to help (e.g. composting) and whatever else you think would help the particular situation.

THANK YOU FOR THIS THREAD I'M VERY PASSIONATE ABOUT THIS KIND OF STUFF!!! So, first of all, there's an app that's for free that I got that deals with helping the Earth for kids, it's Canadian based, really amazing in so many ways and I absolutely love it, I'm not sure if I can put its name here though, @admins, can I put the name of an app here? It's not a website... but anyways, did you guys know that (and this is gross but true) keeping your pee in the toilet is actually better for the environment?!? Bc you're using less water, so if you do two pees in one, that's better! And, oc, eating bugs and beans and stuff to get nutrition instead of meat. And, UGH, I have SO MANY linkbs I want to give you guys because that's what I usually do with my friends but... can't. So, I also try not to use straws if I don't have to, and I would've gotten reusable straws but my parents say it's too much work. We want to start composting, some places give out composting bins and stuff for free, and I want to start a community garden!! Did you guys know that vermicomposting (composting with worms) has many more benefits that just regular composting? I did a bunch of research, and EVERYTHING is better with vermicomposting than composting except for, say, if you have a lot to compost. Then you should do regular composing. But, just some of the reasons, vermicomposting is quicker, easier, and provides a lot more essential stuff in its compost and stuff. And, I love worms, so...    Try not to use too much plastic wrap or tissues or stuff, and try to walk/bike/carpool instead of polluting to get somewhere. And spread the word, oc! I'm much less of an expert on LGBTQIAP+ rights (maybe spread the word too? And if someone says something like... umm... idk, like "you can't have they/them pronouns (I don't mean this at all! Just an example!)", don't just correct them, challenge them! Get them to understand! If you can) and how to help homeless people (except that you can volunteer at a food bank/soup kitchen/something, especially with scouts (I did this with Cub scouts), or make lunches for homeless people (did this with Girl Scouts), and it helps them and also in my opinion is really fun) and stuff, but I would love ideas! You can also do this stuff with school or just do it. OH! And also you can organize beach/park/whatever clean-ups and stuff! Sorry... you can see I'm really enthusiastic... I'll be back later with more things to say! And take shorter showers! And there are sites that estimate how much water you use per month! And don't keep the tap running as you're brushing your teeth! And plant stuff! But anyways, I should stop now or I never will...

We won't post the name of the app. I'm sorry.

Wow! I love how enthusiastic you are, CelineBurning Bright!!Smile Also, the part about pee makes sense, even if it is kind of gross. I think our family does that anyway, whether we knew about that or not. Also, i've never heard of vermicomposting!!! Unfortunatly, I don't think we can do that because we live in an apartment, but if I ever make a garden from renting it, I'll defineitly use it!!! Thanks for all the inspiring words, I'm so happy you posted all of them!!

Things to do to attempt to reduce climate change and pollution:
-Our city has this composting program where you can put food waste in the yard waste bin, which is great, except for the ants that love to live in the compost box in our kitchen.
-Take showers instead of baths, and then take short showers.
-Find pens to use that you can refill so that you don't have to throw away a pen, or find someplace that will recycle pens, or use pencils. You can compost the shavings of pencils that aren't painted.
-Reuse plastic bags.
-Buy things like nuts in bulk. In some places there are refill stores where the people at the store fill a container with whatever you're buying (in my town there's one that sells soap, shampoo, and various other things).
-Do not plug in things that are already charged. When people in my house do this, it drives me a bit crazy.
-Use compostable paper plates instead of plastic ones.
-Try not to take cars too often, and carpool if you must take a car. (I used to carpool with some other people who go to my school, but they all left and I am annoyed.)
-Don't fly unless you have to.

I don't really know how to help with the other issues, but I have one more thing to say, which is: Why in the world do people leave the faucet on while they brush their teeth? It doesn't do much of anything except waste water. (If you have an answer to this, you can post it, but it's kind of a rhetorical question.)
