Why is Japan

Chatterbox: Down to Earth

Why is Japan

Why is Japan so interesting to so many people? Lately I've been noticing that people often watch anime, choose to learn Japanese in school, take trips to Japan... I've never seen it as very interesting, especially compared to Europe, but then again, I don't know very much about it so I probably shouldn't judge - I was wondering what it is about Japan, that I might not know about, that makes so many people want to go there?

oh my gosh, I'm so so sorry if I ever made anyone on this thread creeped out by my comments. I swear, I just think Japan is a really cool country, and its culture is fascinating- like studio ghibli, and many of the things there (especially in Tokyo) are very innovative and unique. it was never meant to be creepy, I just meant to talk about how a lot of people I know really like Japan for studio ghibli, and its natural beauty, and also some of the really modern vending machines.

sorry again, I didn't mean to make anyone feel uncomfortable.

I'm not Japanese, but I am Korean and I think that the West's newfound obsession with East Asian countries, namely Japan and South Korea is really interesting (I also find it quite funny, because those two countries really hate each other). I agree that it's partially because of how relatively new Japanese and Korean industrialization and modernization is; my dad went to Korea when he was my age and the economy was really bad, completely different than how it is now.

Another thing I think is: certain aspects of East Asian culture that the West really likes are mirroring Western ideals (in my opinion). Let's take K-pop- those idols don't naturally look like that, they all (or most of them, at least) have surgeries to make their eyes bigger and jaws less wide and dye their hair, etc, making them look 'less Asian' and 'more Western' (Western/white features are considered 'more attractive' to a lot of East Asians, from what I've seen). They do songs that fit in with Western pop, some with english lyrics. They're meant to be appealing to the West.

I don't know all the reasons, but I thought that I'd throw my two cents in :)

Yes yes yes yes yes YESS!!

Sry, just had to get that out. But, yeah. I agree with all of this. And it is kinda like we're disrespecting Japanese culture (sorry!!)!

And @Blackfooted Bobcat and @Sinusoidal, that's exactly how I am too!! Anything "trendy" or "popular" or anything that's expected that ppl my gender and age or something should like, I try very hard NOT to like it. And some things, I actually  don't like, like boba (sorry guys, but just, nope!) and doing the opposite like for some reason "big kids" aren't supposed to like Disney princesses or especially Let It Go anymore?? but I do (at least the songs, I think there're lots of bad things about Disney princesses), or playgrounds or make believe or pretend but I DO. And I still talk to my stuffed animals but... yeah. But some things I DO like and it's like everyone assumes that I like it cuz I'm this age or female so I wanna go "oh yeah? Well, I DON'T like it, so HA, you can't judge everything on appearance" but the thing is I DO like it, so I try not to. Yeah. Sry that prob doesn't make sense

*gasp* You don't like boba!? (jk I respect your opinion)
I kind of see what you mean by those "expectations". Like, I also sometimes randomly sing Frozen songs (but mostly in private now, because my sibling will make fun of me), and I still have a bunch of stuffed animals on my bed (I have one with me right now). And about the Japanese/Korean obsession, I was fascinated with Japan, but mostly with its culture, though I do believe that it can be...weird, like seeing so many people into anime and Kpop. Though I don't really mind the boba obsession, because I also like boba (and I'm from the country it originated, Taiwan), but either way, this is just my opinion.

About your point...

This very strangely reminds me of Leonard Bernstein's "I'm a person too". Go listen to it right now, its from the I Hate Music song cycle.

You're right, probably Asia's Westernization is what makes the West so interested in it... it's kind of sad that people can't be interested in the real culture behind all the trendiness :(
