Chatterbox: Down to Earth

Squirrel Appreciation Day

Squirrel Appreciation Day!!

I missed National Bird Day, but now it's Squirrel Appreciation Day!! Yay!! And, hey, that rhymes! :)

so this is kinda like the wildlife cams thread (http://www.cricketmagkids.com/chatterbox/downtoearth/node/557868) but more general?? Idk. Basically, put experiences here, if you want, like I did on the above linked thread. Or random poetry/art about the little things. Rant.

Appreciate the little/lesser-appreciated!! The squirrels, the crows, the pigeons, the sparrows, the bugs, the grass, the wind- whatever! Post a little something every day if you want, even if it's something like "that clever pigeon stole my sandwich again!" or "I saw snails" "wow who knew the sun was so bright". :)

or media recommendations! As in, read Sy Montgomery and you will not regret it; you may not agree with it, but you won't regret it. The Hawk's Way! Yay! :)

I saw big worms the other day at school, when it was raining. I think the soil they usually wriggle around in was flooded, so they were crossing the walkway, and students were almost stepping on them :( I spent a half hour trying to convince them to wriggle to safety, by trying to pick them up with a piece of reed (who knew worms were so heavy??). I managed to move them a few inches, then when they persistently kept moving back, I gave up. The good news is, they all made it to safety, because none of them were there by the time I came back to check on them.

Will top this later.

This morning there were a couple of birds in our backyard. There were a few house finches and others, and also a mourning dove, which was funny because the mourning dove was significantly bigger. My family puts out seeds for them, and its really cool to see them (though it's kinda crazy how fast they consume the seeds)

oh i love all of the lesser-appreciated animals! they always remind me of my grandfather - he had pet snails (he called them imps), and he liked watching the squirrels that would scurry along the fire escape outside of my grandparents' apartment :]

i love pigeons, too! i think they're very pretty - not so different than doves. there's probably a metaphor in there somewhere. anyway, i always see a ton of pigeons on my way to school in the morning - i'm always so tired and stressed and dreading the day ahead, but it's nice to take a minute to just watch the pigeons chillin at the bus stop :]

Yess the pigeons!! They seriously are so pretty :0  ok now you've given me an opportunity to rant about pigeons and don't think I'm not gonna take it (cuz I SO am)!

Pigeons may be one of the prettiest birds out there!! Mostly they're purple and turquoise and gray and iridescent~ and have adorable traffic cone feet, though I've seen ones that are black too! And the way they walk is just like perfection XD. And their expressions (I've personally got side-eyed by pigeons more than once). And how they bicker and squabble and eventually just give up and peck at the floor and are determined to get that bread crumb argh everything depends on this I love watching them there's so much personality there it seems!! Plus they're everywhere!! They're such urban birds, I can't understand why people don't notice them more! And my dad always negatively calls them "rats of the sky" and I'm like but whyyyy??? And btw I love rats too we used to have rats in the attic gnawing at the wiring it was awesome. But off-topic! Did you know that pigeons are one of 3 birds that actually have milk?? It was pigeons, emperor penguins, and flamingos I think... anyways, thank you to all my years consuming all the Wild Kratts episodes ever for that fun fact. And all the pigeons that helped save countless lives during the wars!! I do see pigeons and doves grouped together a lot in bird books, I think they're actually some sort of a same species??; I wonder why (mostly pure white) doves get all this hype too?

for fun pigeon facts I love the friends of tower hamlets cemetery park article btw bc I literally just found it as I'm about to post this btw, it's pretty funny and interesting and stuff :)
