Renaissance Festival

Renaissance Festival

Today, at my school, we're having this Renaissance Festival/Shakespeare Festival. We dress up and each grade does a Shakespeare play. (Grades 7-12) My grade (7) is doing Much Ado About Nothing. We had to audition to get into the play - those took place last week - and to do that, we had to condense an act and a scene (5 scenes) into a minute and a half. It seemed impossible at the time, but my group eventually got it done. My friend tried out for the part of Beatrice and I for Benedick and we got the parts (for our particular act)!! Y'see, there are 4 English classes and we all spit up the play between ourselves, so there are four Benedicks and four Heros and four Claudios, etc. But here's the twist. We had to choose another setting for our play. And we chose Alice and Wonderland, which at the time seemed like a bad idea, but now it's working out. As Benedick, I'm the mad hatter and the two bumbling fools/head of the watch are Tweedledum/dee. Etc. And what's even more exciting, is that it's on my birthday!!!!! No classes, just fun and games!

Anyway, do any of you have any festivals like this at your school? Or if you're homeschooled, do you do anything like this with family or friends? And have any of you read Shakespeare and really enjoyed? (Like I have.)

Sorry if you think this thread is in the wrong area; I just chose DtE for the world around me! (Oh my gosh, that rhymes!!! A miracle!!)

I love Shakespeare. Never acted in a play of his, but he's brilliant. My best wishes for your performance, and I wish I could be there to see it. :) And in a while I'll come back to fetch this from the bottom.

Cheers,

@ Lavendershy: Shakespeare is most definitely brilliant.

I just got back from a whirlwind of a day. I did well, according to the people who watched. Yes, the part of Benedick is just so fun to play. Muahaha!

Beatrice: Do you not love me?

Benedick: Troth no, no more then reason.

One of my favorite lines. Anyway, it was really fun. They sold these really good pizza bagels at lunch (bagels topped with tomato sauce and cheese). I know it sounds odd, but it was delicious! Then I helped out with the drink booth that my class was manning and got my fingers extremely cold (from the ice water the drinks were kept in). And everyone kept on saying, "Happy birthday," to me at all times. My homeroom even sang to me! It was wonderful. The seniors did a spoof on Hamlet. Their theme was the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and it was hilarious. Even some professionals came in and acted out some scenes from some plays.

Thanks, lav!

I like Shakespeare a lot. I've read, um, Much Ado, and Twelfth Night. I read them with my Dad, see -- we divide up parts and read them together. Much Ado is my second favorite of all I've read / seen. The Tempest was one of the best. Teedledum and Tweedledee as Dogberry and his friend = brilliant. That would be great.

Definitely a fan of the Spear Shaker... my fav is probably A Midsummer's Night Dream, though Twelfth Night is a close contender.

This is kind of a related comment, but I really REALLY love renaissance and medieval music.  For those of you who feel the same, you should listen to a group called Medieval Baebes.  They're fantastic... I heard them at one of the nation's big renaissance faires and they just tour faires all year long.  They're really fantastic.  For a more "modern" feel to renaissance music (and by modern I mean the use of an electric guitar), I recommend Blackmore's Night.

Ooh, a Renaissance Festival! Cool. I haven't been to the one they have in Spring, l but I really want to. I've been to the Medieval Times that's in Georgia twice. That is fun! And it's funny because the tomato soup they have there, we found an organic tomato soup at Kroger that tastes a lot like it!
