Chatterbox: Down to Earth

Right, so first

Right, so first day posting and I'm going to try my hand at creating my own thread.  I'm a huge history buff and I really can't get enough of those periods I love (Ancient Rome, Medieval Europe, Ancient Mayans, Classical Greece).  But I've noticed that there are certain periods or subjects that I simply can't even pretend an interest in (like the Civil War, Indian history, or Tudor England).

I was just curious to hear what all of your favorite (and least-favorite) historical eras were... and if you have any favorite people from those eras.

Hello, Tempest! Cool name. My favorite period in history is definitely Ancient Greece. The Greek gods are so cool! Do you like Percy Jackson? If you like Ancient Greece, you will like that series, because it is all about the Greek gods in modern times. What music artists do you like? I like the Jonas Brothers (but we're not really allowed to talk about them), Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Miranda Cosgrove, The Fray, Jordin Sparks, John Mayer, and Daughtry, just to name a few. I am officially one of the craziest people here. What are your favorite books? Mine are Harry Potter (I've only read through The Order of the Phoenix, however), Percy Jackson, Eragon, and many others. I hope you stay here. We need some livening up, and it sounds like you will do just that. Bye!

Thanks, I like my name as well.  Long hard debate between two names for the Chatterbox and it looks like I picked the right one.

I am a fan of ancient greece (moreso ancient rome, but i think that's already been established).  My favorite part of ancient greece definitely comes from the Spartans.  They were just SO cool.  And yes I have read Percy Jackson... i read the first one as a recommendation and literally devoured the last four.  My favorite book is the 4th... though i'll leave it at that since this isn't Blab About Books.  (Also have a few things to say about that movie... but again, not for this thread.)

Not a fan of Eragon anymore... actually didn't even finish the series.  I pretty much guessed how it was going to go and I've been dead on so far so I figure there's not much point in reading something that won't surprise me.  i LOOOOOVE harry potter.  enough said.  (If you want to have an awesome HP discussion, I'll gladly start a thread with you for that)

Music?  Umm... don't hate me for saying this... but I'm not a fan of any of those artists you just mentioned!  Hehe... sorry!  My tastes are really eclectic and odd... almost anything but rap is doable with me.  To give you an idea I like Stevie Ray Vaughan, Nightwish, Blackmore's Night, any Irish music, and i LOVE Lady Gaga.  (Not so much watching Lady Gaga... that makes me squirm... but I love her music.  She's really a great singer once you get past her freaky outfits.  And dance moves.  And outfits.)

Tear that you don't like any of those artists. But yes, I looooove Lady Gaga. I forgot to put that in. But yeah, I HATE watching her. Watching her makes my skin crawl. I finally finished my school book, so now I can start Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince!!!! Yayness! Percy Jackson says nnew. Something's new.....well, you're a new person?

My favorite era was the time period of the sumerians. They came right out of the stone age yey had many advances in technology that we do not even have today. The thing i find interesting about the Sumerians was that they claimed to have recieved their vast knowledge from a reptilian race called the Annunaki

Hey Tempest, Welcome!! just before i get into History i thought i'd ask, have you ever read Shakespeare's The Tempest? Your name reminded me of the play. :)

For Historical Era's i have to agree with detail. I love knowing what kind of food people ate, what animals they raised, and what type of fabric there clothes were sown out of. But i have to say i love almost every era. Though some era's i could say i find 'less interesting' but that is only because i don't know much about them. For instance you mentioned Indian History, i have to say that is not a topic i'm familiar with, so i would call it un-interesting to me. Though if i read a good book on it (emphasis on the good bit) i'm sure i would find is fascinating. For me i dislike things i don't understand (not like big things, but small things) , which is probably why i can't stand math. :P

It's rather hard for me to narrow it down, but Medieval, Roman, and Canadian History is my favorite to read about.

I adore historical fiction though, i have to say my favorite time in history for historical fiction would have to be WW2. I find that all historical fiction books i have read in that era are exceptionally good. :)

@RedEyeLess: interesting name... and I love your choice. I'm going to have to read about them... I did know they were REALLY advanced, though I never heard about this reptilian race before (kinda reminds me a bit of the show "V").

@Kendra: Thanks for the welcome, and yes, I've read and seen that play. It's a good one to be sure, but in my opinion, Ariel has nothing on Puck. Midsummer's Night Dream is my favorite. Historical fiction is good as long as they get the detail right, I agree. Though, I enjoy reading it from many time periods (kinda makes the learning a bit more enjoyable). I just read one about a Roman doctor in Roman Britain... very cool. I see what you're saying about not knowing being a reason for disinterest... all the periods I've listed as uninteresting for me I promise that I've at least tried to read about.

agreed! Puck is great, i saw an amazing performance of a Midsummer's night dream last summer. They really made puck a character, it was fun. :) I have to say a comedy of errors and a midsummer is tied at top for me. There's a great theater called Bard on the Beach were i live, every summer they put on a variety of Shakespeare's works. it's loads of fun. :)

@JFB: Actually, common mistconception -- Vikings never wore horned hats/helmets. It was "assumed" when archaeologists found a conical helmet and a pair of drinking horns in the same hoard. The horned helmet only became famous when the opera singers started wearing them.

(Maybe I should post this on my random facts thread too, eh?)

But I completely agree... Vikings rock. I haven't read those books you were talking about, I'll have to. Beowulf (not the awful movie version) is the best Viking story in my opinion... gets better every time you read it.

That is interesting about the helmets...

Hi Tempest!  Welcome to the Chatterbox! And of course, I just have to say how awesome your name is.  I'm Leaf and you'll most often find me swinging on my beautiful tree that resides currently in southern California.  I love history as well!  Before I say favorite and least favorite eras, I want to get across the fact that I do not want to offend anyone who loves (or hates) any era that I classify as a love or hate era.  That done, I'll say that I like the Renaissance more than the Middle Ages by far.  The Middle Ages were so dreary and the Renaissance was more colorful.  I'm not saying I hate the Middle Ages, I do like them, but the darkness of the whole time doesn't make for a happy overall feeling (obviously).  I do like Ancient Greece and Native American history as well.  Egypt is also cool.  What I don't like, similar to most people is: "Hey, I'm king!  I don't like [insert name of country] so I'm going to conquer them.  Oh, while I'm at it, I'll grab a bunch of riches and make life hard for all peasants."  I mean, that gets old real fast.  I do like historical fiction books, if they're not too purple of course.  Myths are awesome, especially ancient Greek/Roman ones.  I love different myths/stories from different countries/religions like JFB.  Thanks for the thread!

Thank you, Leaf. Happy to oblige... I've got lots more ideas, but I thought it would be a tad pretentious (nice, I know... way to sound snooty, Tempest... actually, it sounds... pretentious...) of me to start a dozen threads when I'm brand new. So I shall bide my time...

I don't really have time periods that I like or dislike, just types of info about any time period. I like to learn the details, as many as I can, and why actual events took place as opposed to what happened when. And mythology interests me a lot.

Anyone who liked the Percy Jackson series may also enjoy the Kronos Chronicles by... sorry; I don't remember the author's name.

And I really like historical fiction. Most of the books by Ann Rinaldi are wonderful, as is Pharoah's Daughter by Julias Lester, The Clan of the Cave Bear whose author I don't remember, Angel on the Square by Gloria Whelan, and many, many other books.

And of course, there's the books involving time travel. I'd recommend most books by Peni R Griffin. Well, I've only read 3, but...

And I also really liked the Theodosia Throckmorton series, which takes place in Edwardian England  and involves Egyptian mythology.
