Chatterbox: Down to Earth

We need a

We need a debate.  We need something to get CB up and running again.  Well, I forgot who said this (Brynne, possibly?)... she said the chatterbox is typically slow when school begins but by Christmas it's back to its normal self.  Okay, so I don't know why I bother.  But I hate to see CB like this.

So I was thinking a debate would be good; who doesn't love a good debate?  Okay, but I believe this should be a debate that is based solely off of opinion.  A religious debate, or Vegan debate, or even Evolution or Global Warming debate are all kind of a way of life for us.  They all have to do with what we believe in.  I don't think we should argue over something that means A LOT to us (like our religion) but maybe something that won't offend us (like cat vs. dog) if someone contradicts us. The only idea I have is "The Best Book" debate. Percy Jackson or Harry Potter?  I don't know if that's an easy thing to debate because I haven't read HP yet.  *hears gasps* I'm sorry, k, I will read them... eventually.  I'm busy reading school books right now, though. *sigh*  And I wouldn't be able to contribute much on that debate (except on how incredibly awesome PJ is!!).  So, if you can come up with a good debate that would allow everyone to participate, but won't hurt feelings, please, post!

You think Cats vs Dogs wouldn't be very heated? Ha. Clearly you've never seen Muse... But I don't think it would ever get to the point here where the admins would have to replace all mentions of cats or dogs with hot-pink bunny pictures to avoid arguments.

Anyway, I definitely agree. No-one's posting enough here! And a debate would be fun. I agree that we shouldn't choose a subject that's likely to offend people... Favorite books probably won't work, because none of us can choose, and HP vs PJ would be a mass agreement, not a debate, unless you discover that you still like PJ more, in which case it would be rather unfair, as it would be many against one... But I can't really think of anything else. Unfortunately, I'm horrible at choosing topics, for just about anything...

Aetc likes the idea, too! He says bmui, which means mui buen.

I had to go searching everywhere for this thread, so I'm going to send it to the top instead of lose it again!  And no, I've never been on Muse. :)  That's very true about the book debate.... hmm!  Everyone put out some ideas!!

I agree that the Chatterbox seems slow right now even if I haven't been here very long.  I try not to be a cause of that but there's just soo much I have to do nowadays. :)  Anyway, I think a debate would be fun if it doesn't make too much of an argument.

Best book sounds good to me, but we should all decide on two books to debate on.

How about something more serious than books and cats vs. dogs? Like how wild animals that kill livestock should be dealt with, or how Mustang horses are chased by helicopters for miles in the sun without resting, or something like that.

That would work, too. I'd do a serious one or a less serious one; either works fine with me. Personally, I'd be more interested in your suggestions than Best Book or Cat vs Dog, mainly because the latter 2 are always so hard for me to decide on. But I'll go with either, and we can just see what everyone else says...

Ha.  Welllll.  You clearly weren't on the CB during our huge debate phase.  We had debates about pretty much everything you listed (the big ones were the religion, evolution, and global warming debates).  Eventually the Admin made us stop.  Oh my, I love the old Chatterbox... <3

*GASPS* R~D~, my dear, you need to read Harry Potter!!  NOW!  I read them this summer (they're super easy to read), so that I could watch all the movies before the next one comes out in November.  You at least need to finish the series before the last movie comes out in July!  Because by the time you finish the series, you'll be a crazy HP fan (don't try to say you won't; you will), and you'll be very disappointed if you miss the last chance to see one in the theaters.  Look up Feltbeats on YouTube, ok?  That way you'll always side with Slytherin when you do read them. :)

Oh.  What were we talking about?  Debates...  Twilight vs. HP is always fun. :)

This is a GREAT idea because Chatterbox does seem to be slowing down. I agree, not something too heated like religion (because some of the older posters might remember the last thread on religion) but not something dinky like, um, toothpick vs. dental floss.

I like Cara's idea.

R~D~: Don't worry, I didn't gasp. I haven't read HP either because of my parents. (But we're watching the first movie tonight, after which, I will get my dad's judgement on whether I can read it or not. To him, books are more influential than movies.)

Oh, I went digging up on old threads, so I found some things that you should avoid debating over:

Jonas Brothers

Twilight

Religion

Global Warming

Peace y'all.

Oh! Just got an idea. Screnzy vs. NaNoWriMo (which is coming up soon!!!!!!) Actually, never mind. I think most people would side on NaNo. :-P

Your post just gave me some debate ideas for Chatterbox:

books vs. movies

poetry vs. stories vs. nonficition (either which you prefer to read and why or which you prefer to write)

instrumental vs. vocal music (making it or listening to it)

I have an idea now: Why not use all of these suggestions? Not at once, of course; that would just make it one of those fads everyone ends up complaining about, like Warriors RPs and quizzes and everything else--but in the order from when they were first suggested. We could do PJ versus HP first, then how livestock-killing wild animals should be dealt with, and so on, and so on, until we've done everything that's been suggested so far, and then someone else will get an idea, and then we can do that.

Since no-one seems to ever end up winning our debates (They typically end in one of the following ways: 1) It gets too heated, so everyone has to stop (let's try to prevent this one), 2) Everyone just gives up because they can tell no-one's being convinced, 3) a combination of 1 and 2, 4) Everyone just stops posting for no apparent reason.), and often there is no clear ending, the only problem would be that we'd probably only ever end up doing one or two debates. I think we should set deadlines for them, and they should short, to force us to move more quickly. Then, if we end up with things we want to say after they've passed, we can set a new deadline and wait until that's over. Deadlines would be able to be reset as many times as we like, so they wouldn't limit us; they'd just make us go somewhat faster and prevent us from just stopping, or possibly never starting (if we don't decide on which topic to use soon, I mean).

Of course, no one has to use this idea. We could do something entirely different. This is just what I thought of, and what I think would probably work; we can do something else if that's what everyone wants.

Sounds like a good idea to me, Ima. Let the PJ vs HP begin!

Yay! I liked the old debates, and books are fun to debate over. I'm going to vote for Harry Potter over Percy Jackson. I liked the writing more, the books were longer, and the plot was more complicated. How about everyone else?

Frond! The elvin king! Well, probably not, but I'm still stuck in AF, so I just find that everything has to do with it..

@Ann: AF??  Stands for...?

@Kenzie: I know, I know.  I have a friend who is Harry Potter OBSESSED.  (mind going blank, spell check not working.. is that how you spell it?)  Hehe, she's been trying to get me to read them for a while now and I don't think I can withstand her pestering for much more.  She got my sister onto them (she's on #5 now I think) and so I don't see much of my sister these days (hiding out in her room.... reading.)  But I do believe they are good and I do plan to read them.  But thanks:)

@Ima: your idea is confusing and brilliant. :)  I'm totally fine with whatever.  I'm not in charge of this thread or anything like that so whatever you guys decide is okay with me!

Um... PJ IS AMAZINGLY GREAT.  Yeah...

I agree with Frond, I like HP more.  Because it is longer, more complicated, you have to think about it, and some of the characters are really interesting to read about!  And multiple other reasons.  Though I should probably read all of the Percy Jackson books before I have an opinion about it, for I have only read the first PJ book.  But if we were to debate over the first PJ and the first HP I would definitly go for HP.  :)

Ah and the new Rick Riordan book came out a couple days ago. (See my thread in BaB.).  So far, it's awesome.  Anyhoo, it's kinda hard to debate when no one is willing to comment on this thread.  So... yeah.  If this book debate is too boring, or difficult, we can move on.  But let's try to keep this thread alive; debating is good for CB.
