My Aero Rant!

Chatterbox: Down to Earth

My Aero Rant!

My Aero Rant! You can read this, if you think you can handle it... ;)

I am sick of Aero-wait, make that Hollister, Abercrombie and Fitch, and every other clothing line that puts their logos on shirts and such. Why would you want to be a walking advertisement?

Because it looks fashionable.

Really? Most of them are just solid colored shirts that say AERO in big letters stretching across the whole top.

Because all my friends wear it. And it's cool. And hip. And if I don't wear them, I won't be popular.

Well, exactly why do all your friends wear it?

I recently read a fascinating book called Get Real, which was about how to be a smart consumer. A good chunk of it focused on advertising. And guess what? It said that most of the kids who went around saying certain brands were cool had been paid by the manufacturer to get others to wear the product. (Look at that, ZNZ...maybe that's how you dominate the world!)

I'm sorry if this offends anyone, just the way I feel. Anybody agree?

Oh WritingWarrior...

this may not be funny to you, but it's funny to me.

And no, kids that wear shirts that say "Aero" or "Old Navy" and such, they do not get paid. I have no clue where you got that.

Anyway, I don't think I have met you yet. My name is Mariah. I am 11 and I live in NYC.

Oh dear, I am afraid you misinterpreted that!

So, this is what I meant by "they get paid..."

The company who manufactures the clothes sends people out to look for kids who seem very popular. Then they pay those kids (or give them free stuff) to walk around and say "I simply love Old Navy," "You would look good in an Aero shirt,",etc., etc., etc. Then, all those groups of friends who want to be like these kids just might consider buying one....

And in the end, the company not only has pocketed a nice fat profit but has also slapped ads onto dozens of poor kids! *weeps* OK, I'm done. (Really, ZNZ, I'm thinking we use this method for World Domination. Followers can be paid in TCCP dollars!)

Hello, Mariah! How busy is it where you live? Are you new? If so, there are several "Chatterbox Guides For The New" on this section that I will dig up if needed. There is also a User Directory, and you can make an "I'm New" thread to put yourself out there!

UP! Top! The world needs to know...

I think you have lost it.

And, no offense, but who cares? I really don't. I don't care what my clothes say. I personally like those stores, Old Navy because the clothes last long, and Aero and American Eagle because I like the shirts that are patterns there. If you don't want to buy there then don't. How do you know that the Get Real book you read was true?

She doesn't, but it's more likely that it is true than it isn't. The majority of editors would pick up such large mistakes.

I'm sure she doesn't have a problem with you wearing those clothes for that reason. She has a problem with people wearing them to fit in, and I agree. There's a big difference. You have very good reasons for wearing those clothes. Many people don't.

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU!  I know I'm really not supposed to be on the internet (I gave up a lot of CB time for Lent) but I skimmed the threads and saw this one and was like YES!  I get SICK of wearing around Aero shirts that say Aero!!!!!!  It's totally stupid.  The designers are trying to make it easy on themselves or something--if they would actually design a t-shirt with a pattern or something, they might get some more sales!  In my opinion, you don't look as genuine, put together, or you don't really have your own "style" when you're wearing a t-shirt that has a huge AERO across the front.  We're on the same page, WW!  Although I do LOVELOVE all the new Old Navy t-shirts they just came out with-- because they actually have designs on the front and are very pretty.  I purchased two already (a gray v-neck with orange flowers and a black t-shirt with pink/white/orange beaded flowers) and might get more because I <3 them.

Well, I think [note the think part] that the only people the manufacturers pay are the ones in the advertisements who probably also further endorse the product. And the manu[facturer]'s probably don't go around paying a bunch of popular-looking people to promote their product. Besides, brand-name stores are "in" right now, so the manu's don't really need to go looking for people to sell their stuff.

And I think that the Aero shirts look nice, even if they are overly-expensive, but they are starting to look cliche [add accent thingy] because so many people wear them.

And I also think that Hollister, even though it's expensive, is good quality. And it and American Eagle don't always plaster their names on their clothing. Sometimes, they just put the little eagle or bird thingy.

And finally, I honestly don't know anything about Abercrombie since I don't own anything from it. And I don't know any other brand-name stores besides Garage [if that counts]. Oh, and lulu lemon. But LL is really pricey because of the materials. :)

Ugh, I hate seeing people being walking advertisements.  I'd never wear a shirt with the brand name across the front, even if someone bought me the thing.

Actually I agree with you on some of the things. I have never worn any of those brands... Some kids in my class come up to me and say: Loook at this jacket! It's from Abercrombie. I'm just like OK. I found out that it comes from the US but I'd never heard of it since it came here. They're just more expensive clothes...

I like wearing Aeropostale SHIRTS, not their tee-shirts. Their shirts are really cute, come in a great variety, fit me (since I'm about as tall as a 5 year old), and are reasonably cheap if you buy them on sale. Their t-shirts are the ones plastered with AERO, 87, etc. I have a few, but I don't really like wearing them.

I agree with you, though, people who wear those shirts just to be "cool" annoy me.

I used to have an American Eagle tee-shirt, but the logo was tiny and I couldn't even see it because the shirt was so stained.  I thought that American Eagle was a band or something...  xD  I had gotten it as a hand-me-down from a friend's friend.  I just wore it as a play-shirt.  Now it's tiny on me.  :)

I can't afford it.

I think that WritingWarrior has a point, but honestly, I should stay out of this, because I have no idea what I'm talking about, but I am so, hurrahs for me.

Not all of these stores have their names on all the merchandise. I shop frequently at these places and haven't bought a shirt like that in about two years. You can shop there are avoid being walking advertisements.

It does kind of annoy me when I see people who only wear those shirts and just about no other shirts. I used to have a couple of shirts from places like that. One from Hollister and one from what I think was American Eagle. They were hand-me-downs from one of my cousins. I only wore the Hollister one once because it did have Hollister across the front and my friends teased me about wearing it and it got kind of annoying so I stopped wearing it. The American Eagle one I did wear because it didn't have the name of the store on it. So I don't really have anything against those shirts, just wearing them because they are comfortable t-shirts, but it is silly just to wear them to be in style.
