So at noon

Chatterbox: Down to Earth

So at noon

So at noon today I was in the car driving home from church... ...and my toes and fingers were numb... which made practicing piano a huge problem. :\ (I just put my hands around the piano lamp every few minutes.)

My point: there's finally snow here (a lot) and it's COLD! (as in below zero ((celcius)) by a lot) My fUggs (fake Uggs) can't keep my toes from getting numb and I don't like having indoor shoes and outdoor shoes so no snow boots. And I walk. Outside. For 20 minutes. Every. School. Day.

Is it freezing anywhere else?

Yes, it's cold in Illinois! It was reeeeally cold for two days, but now a bit warmer. On the coldest days, I went cross-country skiing. That really warmed me up. It's a real workout.

It's been pretty cold here, we just got some snow! We might even have a snow day on Tuesday, so we can stay home from school. Say, have you tried lining the insides of your shoes with plastic? It will keep your feet pretty dry.

That's a GREAT IDEA! I don't have school today (because I'm just that awesome/dentist appointment/PA day) so I'll try that.

@Admin: I've never been skiing before (and I've lived in snowy Canada all my life). What's cross-country skiing like?

Cross-country skiing is awesome! The best way to enjoy winter. I like it better than downhill skiing because in cross-country you can ski on hiking trails through the woods. The hills are usually only gentle, so I can always feel in control. (I don't like to be skidding out of control!) You can go at your own speed, and it's a great workout! You can also ski anywhere there is snow. You don't have to travel to a resort with a lift, so it's usually free. We usually go to a nearby state park with marked trails, but if roads are really snowy or icy, I can just step out my backdoor, put my skis on, and start skiing in my own neighborhood. We live one block from a city park with some nice gentle hills.

I started cross-country by renting skis and taking a free lesson at our nearby state park. Soon after that I bought my own skis, boots, and poles (LL Bean mail order, reasonable price, and great fit and durability) because the rental place isn't always open and when it is they often run out of my boot size.

While you're skiing, you'll see various animal tracks. We see lots of deer tracks here, rabbits, birds.

Let us know if you give it a try. If it's going to be cold, you might as well learn how to enjoy it, and you'll warm up really fast (like in about 90 seconds)!

That's so cool, how you can go skiing really close to your home, Admin! And FOR FREE! :D My neighbourhood doesn't have anything like that; just small playgrounds and a marsh that's entered through a major road twenty minutes away if I walk. :(

My school's going skiing, but all the spots are full already I think. There's always next year.

Sure, you have the rest of your life to try it! I didn't start skiing till I was about 16.

@Admin: I don't want to downhill ski. It seems so scary to go DOWNHILL on a SKIS. I've always called skis unreliable. But I do want to go cross-country skiing. My mom wants to do it sometime. It sounds fun. And up here, you can find all sorts of cool woody places to go. I'm sure we'll find a ski park in no time.

It's cold in NC after a long stretch of really mild weather, but no snow.  :(

It's been cold around here, but it's only snowed twice.  The first time was before Halloween, and one was a light dusting overnight that was melted by the next afternoon. :(  New England weather is so odd.

This morning I was wearing a long-sleeved shirt and jeans, and then that got too hot and then I started sweating like crazy in a T-shirt and shorts. I'm asking you, IS THAT RIGHT!?!?!?!?!?!?! It's Jan. 17!!!!!! 83 degrees F but it seems a lot warmer because of the mugginess. Sometimes I hate Texas.

Nope; it's very warm outside and it's pouring.  I wish I lived where it snowed more often!

It has not snowed at all for the entire winter! In fact it was so warm and sunny 1 or 2 weeks ago it felt like May!

You're lucky 'cold' where you live is considered  under 60!!  Where I live, it's considered below freezing!  And it happens a lot!

It started being cold on Monday... It snowed, but only about 4 cm. :( and the temperture today was -27 but the wind chill made it -37! COLD. Often people use there skis in the winter, instead of walking to work, school or just for fun. (People let their dogs pull them too.) Winter has come late this year and not very much snow...sad
