Chatterbox: Down to Earth

Exercise! Running specifi

Exercise! Running specifically.

Well, we had the beep test* already. Twice. I failed the first time (as in I got a literal 5.3 which earns you the lowest grade) but I did a bit better the second time (7.5 which is a Level 3 Very Good). (There's Needs Work, Good, Very Good and Excellent)

Anyway, I want to try out for track and field and cross country this year and I don't want to die during tryouts this time. (My friend dragged me to tryouts last year...) Or at all. Especially if certain very annoying and gloaty people are there. :/ So I've actually been EXERCISING ON PURPOSE!

I've been running. Once a week. (or twice, I can't really remember) On a treadmill. For twenty-ish minutes. (I kept on pressing on the emergency button thing by ACCIDENT and it would always go back to 0:00 minutes when I restarted). I'd rather go outside but NOOOOO. Canada just has to be below freezing EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. So I'm currently stuck with a piece of moving rubber that I will fall off of one of these days.

I do swimming twice a week for an hour each time. 200m IAM order (8 lengths: two fly, two back, two breaststroke, two freestyle) for a warmup. -_- Then suicide. We normally do 200m suicide- which is where you do a length then you get out, do pushups at one end then swim and get out and do crunches etc. etc.

Then we repeat. Three more times normally, depending on how happy and who our coach is (we did 500m freestyle when our normal coach was sick) .

And then we do relays.

Then conditioning. (Slow-motion pushups are not fun. AT ALL)

And then I go home and eat ice cream.

But enough with my whining. Does anyone have any ideas for exercising that doesn't require buying things? And when it gets warmer, how do you guys run? I've only done practices at my school where we'd run to a park thing then run up and down a hill over and over and over again.

And don't tell me to do hits** on the treadmill. Because I'll most certainly fall off.

*The beep test is part of fitness testing. Basically, you run across the gym multiple times while a drone says "Level 1" then "Level 1.1" and etc. If you don't get across the line in time, you get BENCHED. (My distance, 7.5 which is considered mediocre, is a whopping 1330m (0.83 miles apparently) in a time of around 7:50...)

(There are also usually Terminator robots who WILL take over the world one day who get up to Level 21 in a group)

**I'm not sure if hits are done on exclusively ellipticles which seem a lot safer but if they're done on treadmills also they are: Jogging for five-to-ten minutes then breaking into a one-minute-ish sprint.

I like hiking. As in big hiking. 5.5 miles and whatnot.

Wow! I love to exercise!!!!! I'm not really sure about exercises that don't require having to buy stuff b\c exercising for me is just really riding my bike and walking, (usually requiring a watch.) I also go swimming almost every Friday for an hour. I have a really big backyard where I play basketball and swing, but I will try to find some ideas for you.

Well, I play Wii Fit, which seems to be working pretty well, and I play lacrosse on Mondays and Wednesdays and maybe Fridays, and maybe Thursdays, and games on weekends, and then I run on Saturdays or Sundays, and then I have PE every day except for Wednesdays and an extra long PE on Thursday. So I guess that you just have to excercise when you can.

I love to ride my bike.  This doesn't count for something you don't have to buy, but I love to play Just Dance- 2 and 3.  We have the mile run on Friday where we need to run a mile in ten minutes- nine minutes thirty seconds.  I can't do that!!  The most I can manage is fourteen minutes without dying.  I can dance, play sports, basically anything athletic without being winded, but I cannot run/jog/walk.  I don't know why.

I ran during March break around the block a few times. Did I mention that the block is the same size as a track? I think I might have run the 1500m accidentally. Either that or I didn't stretch enough (I had a very bad cramp afterward).

The weather's finally nice here. (Weather for SHORTS! In Canada! I know, I'm surprised too!) I might try to run tomorrow. Today I had swimming. (Texan pushups + wet tiles = painful red marks on elbows :/ )

Hi!  Checking in on the CB and found this.  You probably remember I run cross-country. :)  Well, my advice for you is: Find out if your cross-country team has summer training.  (XC starts in the fall for us so we have training all during summer).  Training is optional, and I would definitely recommend doing that a couple days a week, that way, you're running with friends, or at least running with other people which is the safer way to go.  We have so much fun during training and even plan ice cream runs to a local joint... it's awesome.  We've also had water balloon fights, and blackberry fights.  When the blackberries are in bloom (we have blackberries EVERYWHERE!!!!!) we come back from runs mostly purple... :-)

I am really bad during the winter.  I don't really do much.  Well, I do go to a local fitness center probably 2 times a week and lift weights, walk, etc.  But mostly, I'm in my best physical condition in summer and fall.  I'm not running track & field. So no advice there besides, at my high school they have training beforehand for that also, so look into that.  But it's cold here too (not that cold...) so I wouldn't blame you if you prefer to treadmill it up. :D

We hike a lot, especially in summer and spring. We went on this really big hike from one town to another. It was 18 km (11.846 miles) or something like that... I also ride my bike to school every day rain or snow, have gym twice a week, ride horses, walk a lot, dance and am learning to ride the ripstick. I'm thinking about jogging... Is there something really important to know about jogging at all?

@ Olive- Do you have nice areas to hike where you are? You could try going on hikes on the weekend. Biking is also really good, but only if you're in a bike-friendly area...

I would love to run. Unfortunately, I twisted my kneee or something aboout 6 months ago, so now whenever I run my knee starts to hurt again. During the summer though, I usually join a swim team (which means I wake up at 6 a.m. 5 days a week). However, I don't think I'm going to join a swim team this summer (it gets exhausting after a while). I love walking though (sounds lame, but I enjoy it), especially in the early morning. I also do pilates and some workout videos from a website called Tone It Up about 5 days a week.

Does anyone do ballet as a hobby? I really want to join a class this summer, but I'm not sure. Thoughts?
