What characters refuse

What characters refuse to do what you want? Please tell me, and here's mine... And, by the way... Ignore me if I go off topic.

 - Draco. Her original personality was... gets mad at anybody who  says a word against dragons. Loves dragons more than she loves any human on earth... not to mention that she's a part time dragon slayer with temper issues, I don't think she ever 'got mad at anyone who said a word against dragons'. Then again, this was when I was ten. Let's try again... This is later... Daring and a bit reckless, doesn't like to talk about her past. Dislikes formality, and gets mad at anyone who says a word against dragons..... Well. Last bit still isn't true. 'daring and reckless' is well, in some cases. And dislikes formality is true. Slightly better. Now, again... Daring and a bit reckless, doesn't like to talk about her past. Dislikes formality, and gets mad at anyone who says a word against bronzeclan dragons... This makes slightly more sence. But it still doesn't mention being short tempered.

She also keeps on trying to switch her eyes to brilliant green. I said they're hazel many times, but no. I've got that in control, though. Her personality, though... Has a life of its own.

-Sirius Ember. No matter how much I tell him not to fall in love, he still always ends up doing it! *cough* even if Holmes and Gigi are doing it *cough* . But never mind that. It's annoying.

---

In fact, my RP characters always seem to have a complicated love life. Spara, Draco, Sirius... And in Scratch, it's crazy. This one RP I own, it's about element powers... Both of my friends' main characters have a crush on one of mine.

Oh gosh, Sonny.  She was originally supposed to be down to earth and nice to everybody.  Now, she's a stereotypical supermodel.  I don't mind, though.  It's easier to write humorously with her like that.

Sorry!  I was in a "holiday humor".

Thank you Tiffany...I now take leave to rant.

My one character that's been giving me problems is a girl called Lene. Originally, she was supposed to be smart, upright, business-like, no-nonsense, yet still a fun, friendly person, who had friendships aplenty, even with boys, yet she was never supposed to fall in love with any of them. (I based her on Minerva, the Roman goddess of WISDOM. Minerva also was a virgin, so I expect she didn't fall in love very often—see next line.) I failed miserablely.

She ended up falling in love with her fencing opponent. She was the best fencer in the kingdom, and so of course she beat everyone, until this guy came along to ruffle her cool and she eventually ended beating him. But through this time, while I intended for her to be the calm girl I wanted her to be, she turned her back on me and fell in love. Not that I mind it, particularly—it might help the storyline a little—it's just disconcerting to find a character you planned so neatly do a 180° on you.

I guess it didn't help basing this guy on a person I happen to think is cute—likely my own fancy got in the way of Lene's judgement. But that isn't exactly the point...

She's reforming, a little—I cut the romance in half, even though I do allow them to hang out together considerably, so she mould back to what I want her to be. About time!

(Random note: Tiffany, I love the name Sirius Ember. It sends chills down my spine from the bare coolness. (Pun intended.))

My novel characters all seem to want to do different things than I want them to do, the story evolves as the charries see fit. =P

My OFCs in fanfic morph into Sues no matter how many faults I force on them.  They're really quite disagreeable.  So I quit making up any OCs- male or female, major or minor- altogether (cruel, I know, but when one ventures into the perilous realm of Fanfic one must take extreme measures upon occasion), and instead turned my full attention to the eternally enthralling House of Feanor.

My characters—all of them—always inevitably end up distinctly crazier than I intend them to be, unless I have a purposefully insane character worked in beforehand. And even then, I have to keep a very close eye on the sane ones to make sure they don't slip.

I don't know why this is. Possibly because the lunatics are more fun to write anyway. If I ever write a book set in a madhouse I'll be golden.

Another thing that happens is the opposite of the love problem Tiffany and Everinne mentioned. In the (vanishingly rare) event that I actually try to write a ship, it ends up being... er, highly dysfunctional. And not at all what actual romantic relationships really look like.

That last problem is easy.  Pretend the girl's you and the guy the person you're convinced you're going to marry one day, whether he's a person you know or your celebrity crush.  Seriously, it works. *blushes*

I doubt that that would work for TNÖ, as she's aromantic.

...I've never had a crush.

People just... don't interest me that way.

Erm... I remember TNÖ starting a thread that asked us what crushes felt like, so that made me assume that she'd never had a crush.

Anyway, not really much of a problem. I try to avoid romance beyond simple crushes because I've never experienced it. Never even danced with anyone.

I've danced with someone. But it was an accident. I was like nine and we were at homeschool co-op and they were having this big square-dancing class, and I got paired with my at-the-time crush. It was embarrassing, but mainly because he sang. He was younger than me, though, he probably just didn't know better.

And that's my random story of the day.

Never mind.  Model it after a romance on a show?

Oh, which characters listen to me? None of them. Well, there is the occasional sideline person that I don't develop too much but is still part of the story, and they occasionally tend to listen. But the important ones? Nope. Half of them end up being psychopaths or sociopaths who are rebelling against something or someone that is actually more evil than them. The other half are just... odd. Like Endey. Unsuprisingly, the majority of the crazies are girls. The odd ones are the boys, especially if I'm writing in first person. Especially people like Endeyrory.

Not just characters, but whole plotlines. For last years Nano, I never intended for Cartmer to be the main character. Her third person point of few was supposed to supplemental, while Kyrian's first person was supposed to the be the main. At this point, around 58,000, I have a couple angry characters who feel like it would be for the good of their nation or religious sect or personal interests to kill him, and now Cartmer isn't putting a guard on him because she has to deal with the five kidnappers for whom she is providing asylum in her house, her former now again best friend who tends to manipulate other people into kidnapping people, the god not so randomly showed up in her car while she was driving and was attacked by Elsavis/Tanriel/Proctor/Lizta Pracea, who is the god's best friend from a hundred forty million years ago whom he forgot about and became a fairy tale, and on top of that there's going to be a war soon, a few months after she is coronated and is Vikaryae.

...and I now realize that I completely forgot about Z's blind twin some 5,000 words ago, and that means Cartmer forgot about him, and therefore he can't just be stuck because he's only a few hours away, so that means that something bad happened to him. Oops.

Romance? Really, the only one that is actually happening is Endey and Draco's, which isn't really happening because they're currently in a cavern fighting a bunch of stone dragons who are really hard to kill.

I love Endey. Not the way Draco does, but I find him extremely funny and... Just... Awesome. "Presumably explaining how awesome I was."

All of my RP characters that are boys end up going odd as well. There's Rastus, who ended up as a soft, clumsy, nice person who's impossible to wake up in the morning. Dale, who's even more of a coward than I intended. Deren of course, who ended up... Well, a maniac who tried to kill Draco and was probably crazy even before then.  (coughcoughcoughhearsvoicescoughcoughcough)
