"But are you sure it's okay?" the sound wafted out into the hall.  Sabrina stopped, dropping the books she was holding.  She quickly picked them up, hoping whoever was talking hadn't heard her.

"Don't worry, Jesse," a female voice said, "As long as Sabrina doesn't find out, we're fine."  She found out, Sabrina thought.

"I'm not worried about Sabrina, Sasha.  I'm worried about how my mother would react if she knew," the man replied.

"Your mother's dead, Jesse," Sasha said, "You don't need to worry about that old bat."  A pause.  "We need to get going."

Sabrina gathered her books in her arms and walked into the parlor.  "Hello, Miss Merivale.  Hello, Mister Datchery.  What lessons do you have for me today."

And with that, her tutors shut up.

Miss Merivale straightened up. "Sabrina, I am well aware that you may have heard a part of our conversation, but I believe that this matter does not concern you," she said in her usual, stiff tone. "And if you would like some work today, I suggest you go into the study and practice your arithmetic." With that, she tore her icy gaze from Sabrina and turned around in her chair. Sabrina narrowed her eyes.

"I believe--" she started, making her other tutor glare at her again, "--that this is very well my business. Did I not hear my name just now?" Mister Datchery stood up, and she noticed that he was sweating. His brown eyes darted around the room, avoiding hers.

"S-sabrina... I--I," he stuttered, his fingers twitching nervously. Miss Merivale sighed, biting her lip.

"Oh, Jesse," she said quickly, "didn't I tell you to stay home today? You have the most dreadful cold." Miss Merivale turned to Sabrina. "I'm so sorry, dear. Mister Datchery is ill, and will not be carrying out your lessons today." Sabrina walked out of the room, knowing that this was a battle that she could not win. Something was definitely wrong. Mister Datchery was not sick. He had never been absent once in the eleven years that he had tutored her.
