I'm just gonna

Chatterbox: Inkwell

I'm just gonna

I'm just gonna listen to the Civil Wars and type some random stuff and hope this turns into an RR.

I'm sitting in the woods, waiting for them to come, when I hear the noise.  It sounds like an animal breathing, really loudly.  I look around.  No sight of them.  I might as well investigate the noise, even though my head is screaming out "This is how people in horror movies get killed!".

"Hello!" I scream out into the foliage.  It echoes once before being swallowed up by my surroundings.  The breathing intensifies, but seems to be coming from behind me now.  And it's getting louder.  My feet are pounding loudly on the ground, cracking branches and brittle leaves beneath me.  Yet, I still feel the sticky breath on my back.  I whirl around to see...

My alarm blares, waking me up.  Every night since my sister ran away, I have had this dream.  Every morning, I wake up with the same questions on my lips.  Who am I waiting for?  Why am I waiting for them in the woods?  One pressing question stands out: What is stalking me? I quickly write down these questions in the notebook I keep beside my bed and do a rough sketch of the forest before swinging my legs out of bed.  My arms stretch up and around, then I'm shimmying my pajamas off, settling back into my routine and temporarily forgetting all about what I've just witnessed.

When my mom shouts, "Are you awake, Rhea?", the dream completely fades away in my memory to where it won't be remembered until I open the notebook or dream it again tonight.

Our kitchen is filled with photos of Theia, my sister, who ran away two months ago. We look almost alike, long blond hair, green eyes and pale skin but Theia is taller, a year older and a risk taker.

Ever since she left, Mom has been at her wit’s end. Dad died when I was seven, which already scarred her. Now, I’m all she has left. Mom quit her job when Theia disappeared. Now she spends her day cooped up in her office, doing I know what. I haven’t bothered asking. It seems since Theia’s disappearance that there’s an invisible boarder between us.

I spread a thick coating of peanut butter over my hot toast and walk into the hallway. I’ll eat my breakfast while walking to the school bus.

“Bye Mom!” I yell, hoisting my bag onto my shoulder and opening the door.

“Have a good day, Rhea.” She responds half-heartedly.

Our house is situated about half a mile from the next cul-de-sac. It has a big yard that ends at a dark forest, which I’ve never taken enough courage to step into. Sometimes I ask myself if it’s the forest from my dreams. The house has three stories and a basement and it is painted green to match the grass. A white fence surrounds it. Rhea and I used to repaint it every summer. I can forget about it now for Mom won’t help, she hasn’t touched the garden since Dad died.

The gravel crunches under my tennis shoes as I near the bus stop. I savor the last bite of peanut butter toast, licking my fingers to get the leftover bits off. Then I’m at the bus stop.

The group of kids that has gathered, glances at me. They all know about my sister, the whole town does. And since that happened my status has gone from “just another quiet outsider” to “the freak who lives isolated in a three story house”. I didn’t have many friends before. Now, I have a total of 0. For what reason, I don’t know.

The bus pulls up, big and yellow and empty. This cul-de-sac is the first stop on the route. I get on last, making my way to the last seat, feeling surreptitious gazes on my back. I sit down in the brown bus seat and lean my head on the window…

I'm sitting in the woods, waiting for them to come, when I hear the noise.  It sounds like an animal breathing, really loudly.  I look around.  No sight of them.  I might as well investigate the noise, even though my head is screaming out "This is how people in horror movies get killed!".

Suddenly a voice sounds: “Hello Rhea.”

I wake up, slamming my head on the window. This time the dream was different. It talked to me, the thing talked to me. I feel around in my backpack, looking for a pen and a piece of paper. As I do this I happen to glance out the window and see a boy. He is standing on the curb, dressed all in black to match his dark curls. He holds one hand up, a cold smile dancing on his lips, and waves.

The boy comes on the bus at the next stop.  He doesn't seem to get the memo that I'm a Full-Time Town Outcast and sits next to me.

"Hey," he says, holding out a hand for me to shake, "I'm Jason."  As I shake his hand, I get the weirdest feeling I've heard his voice before.

"I'm Rhea," I reply.

"I'm new to town," he says.  The second he says 'new', I figure it out.  His voice is the same voice that just talked to me in my dream.

The clouds have been looking suspicious all day, and at that moment, they decide they want to be clouds no more; they want to be water again.  "Welcome to our beautiful town," I say, sarcastic emphasis on the world 'beautiful'.

Lightning flashes outside of the bus, making everyone on it cast an eerie shadow.  Jason's it the eeriest of all.  His shadow appears just like a wolf.

I inhale sharply and scoot closer to the window, trying to get as much distance between me and Jason as possible. He turns to me, a look of innocence on his face. "What's wrong, Rhea, h'm?" He comes closer until our legs are almost touching. "There's no reason to be scared." The lightning flashes again. His shadow is a human shape, nothing out-of-the-ordinary. Did I just imagine the wolf shadow?

The bus screams to a halt in front of our school. I jump up, pushing past Jason, hoping that he won't attempt to follow. Of course, he follows. I've never been one to have good luck. "Rhea?" I hop off the last step, push past the others, ignoring their angry protests. "Rhea!" I feel sick and dizzy. Does Jason have something to do with my sister's disappearance?

Suddenly a hand touches my shoulder. I whirl around, a scream on my tongue. Yet it is only Mrs. Finnigan. "Rhea, please no running. You know better than that." Then she turns away from me to continue monitoring the children.

I join the wave of students, pushing into the building. My ears are alert, listening for the sound of Jason's voice, but all I hear are the conversations of the students around me. I reach my locker and grab the books I need. Am I going crazy? Was Jason just a hallucination? Will they send me to an asylum? I slam my locker shut and turn towards the stairs that lead to English class.

He's standing right in front of me. The world turns for a moment and then I slump to the floor.

This looks cool! This sort of has a Lost Hero feel to it.

At first, I didn't want to wake up. My brain was fuzzed. I struggled to recall this mornings events. I could feel the hard, smooth floor beneath me. I was vaguely aware of someone moving near by. I could hear the murmer of voices. The room was cold. I shivered. Someone placed a hand on my forehead. I finally managed to bring myself round enough to open my eyes. The place was dimly lit. My vision was still fuzzy, but I made out a face above me. The figure placed a hand on my back and gently helped me sit up.

"Here," they said, putting a cup to my lips. At the sound of the voice, the mornings events came rushing back, and I nearly choked on the warm milk, or at least, that's what it tasted like.

"You!" I gasped between, deep coughs. "You. were. there. this morning!"

Jason nodded. A strong chilling breeze blew through again, causing me to shiver. I looked around, realizing we were in a warehouse. An old one, by the looks of it. The catwalks were barely hanging, the roof and walls had large holes, and was by no means anyway inulated.  I looked back at Jason, and nearly shot out of my skin. I fire blazed which Jason now knelt beside.

"When did you start that?" I asked, leaning forward into it. I then noticed that a coat now hung around my shoulders.

"How?.." But the question died in my throat. Suddenly, another voice echoed from one of the catwalks.

"So, you finally brought her?" I jarred, violently. I knew that voice. Older, a little huskier, but still the same. I looked in the direction where the voice had come from. A tall, thin figure stood there, leaning against the rail. She had changed. She wore all dark clothing, like Jason, and her smile was a cocky smirk. But there was no mistaking the long blond hair, green eyes, and pale skin.

"Theia," I whispered, my throat choked with tears that brimmed over my eyes. She smirked, pulled herself beneath the railing, and jumped to the floor.

"Hey sis."

I shook my head, and felt a lone tear wash down my face. None of this made any sense. "Theia," I said. "We have to go."

"Where?" She raised an eyebrow.

"Back home. Theia, mom needs us!"

"Are you sure?" she asks harshly, a cold look in her eyes. "No one needs us, Rhea. No one wants us."

I see Jason's shadow flicker to a wolf's, and my own sister's shadow also becomes disoriented for a second, but I don't see what it had changed to. I feel the blood slowly drain from my face.

Theia sees this. She has changed, I can tell, but she is still my sister and still cares for me. "Please, Rhea. We're not trying to harm you. I'm trying to smile, but it's hard."

You don't smile anymore, I thought. You cockily smirk. The Theia I knew always used to smile.

"Things are hard and--"

Suddenly I feel angry. "Of course things are hard! Our mother has locked herself up in her office and quit her job when you left Theia! Does that mean anything to you? She already had so much pain in her after Dad died, it really didn't help at all when you ran away! We have to go back!" My voice drops to a whisper. "We have to try to make things better."

Theia shakes her head. "It doesn't matter now. The damage has been done."

"No," I whisper, looking at my feet. "We can still--" I stopped in horror, watching my own shadow become the form of something not human. A shadow of a.....

... bear.

Shocked, I glanced up, glaring at my changed sister. She smirked yet again, an expression I began to loathe. "Theia, I-I don't understand," I said. Theia rolled her eyes and exchanged a silent conversation with Jason, who had been listening intently the whole time.

Finally, Jason motioned for Theia to follow him into a far dark corner. They huddled together, their backs facing me, and started to furiously whisper. I sat down on the floor, leaning against the cold wall.

Theia, my only sister and true friend, was different. When we were younger, she would   explain things I didn't understand nicely. Her cold response to my confusion hurt alot.

A minute later, Jason and Theia waltzed back to my corner. Jason chucked a heavy backpack at my feet. "Listen, kid. We need your cooperation, lives are on the line," Jason said. "In the backpack you'll find more appropriate clothes for our expedition, along with some other neccesary items. Whatever you do, do not turn on the flashlight, unless Jason tells you," Theia said.

I don't want to go at first, but then I realize I could try to maneuver Theia and I back towards home.  We trek through the woods in utter darkness.  Then the rain picks back up.  We are pelted by stinging water droplets while lightning lights up the forest for sporadic periods of time.

"We should turn back, or at least stop," I protest, "Trees are dangerous during lightning storms."

"We need to keep going," Jason replies, lighting illuminating his face and making the sentence even more dramatic.

The lightning strike brings a revelation: we are hiking through the same place I am in the dream.  I become frantic.  "Guys, promise me you won't leave me alone, at least until we're out of the woods."

"What, are you scared of a little lightning, Rae Rae?" Theia asks, using a childhood nickname to mock me.

"It's not the lightning.  I... I've seen this place in a dream," I confess, "I know it sounds crazy, but nothing else has seemed to make sense today."

Jason and Theia are silent for a moment.  "Her powers must be more advanced than I thought if she already has the sight," Jason whispers sharply.

"I told you not to underestimate her," Theia remarks, then says much more loudly, "Just keep moving."  And so we walk further into the forest.

Hello! I'm new. What's an RR?

RR stands for Round Robin. Each person takes a turn writing a part of a story.
