Literary Magazines

I made a pact some few months ago that I wouldn't write any more short stories until I finished my novel, and I just broke that pact two weeks ago, completing three short stories while my novel wilts and wonders why it's being ignored. But I need a place for those short stories beside my "Eventual Short Story Collection" Word file, so I wondered if there are any literary magazines for kids that I can submit them to.

I did a Google search, but only came up with Cicada (the website of which I am haunting) and something called Creative Kids, which sounds slightly obscure and gives you a really rigid word limit. So if you know/subscribe/read/have run into/gotten published yourself by any kids lit mags that sound interesting, I'd love to hear about them. I know S.E. always talks about the magazines she's published in, but she never said what they're called...

Thanks for your help, and I'll take any advice you can give!

Is there still a magazine called Stone Soup? Look it up.

I want to send my stuff to Stone Soup, as it pays well ($40 per story, free verse poem and book review and $25 per illastration, with about two illiastations per person per story) but that's for kids 13 and under, so Everinne couldn't use it.

Otherwise, I don't really know. Highlights mag will accept things from 16 years and older, going on a theme. But that's kind of for younger kids, and I don't know what kind of stuff you write. I've searched around, but usually I ignore the age limits I can't get into.

Admin #2: Here's a huge list of magazines that publish young authors: http://www.newpages.com/npguides/young_authors_guide.htm.

You guys have written things that have been published in real magazines other than Cricket (no offense Cricket)?!

Admin: It's OK, we are proud to be the world's first unreal magazine :)

Not meaning to brag, but I've already been publsihed in Stone Soup. *smiles innocently* Yes, they do pay well. :)

I'll definitely check out that list, Admin, thanks!

I'm sorry, I can't really say what magazines I've been published it. But Stone Soup is wonderful! I was in the first honor role beacause they wanted me to write a book review on a biography of the Bronte sisters, but I don't think the book was appropriate.

Most biographies are inappropriate. People who write those books have an uncanny way of digging up the dirtiest secrets of the people they write about.

Depending on your age, you could submit to Teen Ink.  It's a literary magazine out of Massachusetts that my creative writing teacher always wants us to contribute to.

There's another one called The Marble Collection, but I think that one only allows submissions from students living in MA.

@ Melody:

So Teen Ink is a real print magazine? I know it was a website; I've read some book and movie reviews there, but I wasn't sure if it was an actual magazine. I'll definitely check it out!

Yeah, my English teacher gets them.  They're huge, like newspaper size.
