Virtual Reality Story Idea

This is a story idea I got a while ago. I haven't actually written anything on it, mostly because it's kind of hard to start a story of this kind... it's sci-fi, and it's based on virtual reality, like Oculus Rift if you know what that is. Can you give me feedback on whether this would be a good story? Or help on how to start it?

Reaxis is the world government. They’ve given everyone a virtual reality headset and raised them alone. The virtual world everyone sees looks completely techie -- holograms, touchscreens -- and has nobody but themselves. The government, by isolating the people in a world that means nothing to anyone, ensures there is no rebellion and that society stays the way it is forever. Nobody remembers what happened before Reaxis because they are raised alone and taught by Reaxis. They all believe that their virtual reality, which they call Reaxis is the real world. But one day, one person touches another. In his/her virtual world, there’s nothing, just thin air. But he/she can feel the other person, like they bumped into each other in the real world. They know what touch is because the virtual world has haptic (touch) feedback for hands and feet. But they’re touching on a different part, like elbowing each other. And they realize that if they are touching, they can communicate. They realize that Reaxis’s world is only virtual -- and they realize that there’s a real world out there.

Wow, that's an awesome story idea! I don't know what Oculus Rift is, but this looks really original and awesome and yes, you should write it because now I really want to read it! For help with how to start it, do you mean where in the story to start writing? Maybe you could start with something fairly unusual happening in the virtual world (perhaps caused by failing technology, which allows the people to bump into each other in the first place?), and this would get the reader familiar with the virtual world, and then have the two characters touch? Or if you want to have different parts from the point of view of each of the two characters who bump into each other, it might be really interesting to see how the characters react differently. An interesting question just popped into my mind: you would need someone to maintain the technology, right? To keep the virtual world running and fix any glitches in the program, that sort of thing. Well, that person would probably have to not be hooked up to the virtual reality, and what would they think of the whole thing? Or what if the character hooked up to the virtual reality bumps into the maintenance-person, instead of another person also hooked up to the virtual reality?

Sorry if I went on too long, but your story idea really got me thinking!
