The world of

The world of Decepmyth

Everyone knows that there is a fantasy land somewhere out there. Some people translate it as Neverland, or Narnia. Others say that this fantasy land is a part of our world that we are oblivious to. For example, Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry, or Camp Halfblood and the idea of the greek myths living among us. However you think of this land, there is one thing we can all agree upon: that it is real.

Welcome to Decepmyth; the world of deception and illusion, my translation of this fantasy land. Decepmyth can only be reached by one way, and that is words. Words are the only thing that come close to describing Decepmyth, though it remains indescribable. Perhaps the closest accounts of Decepmyth are described in The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, as it is a snow covered land with an abundance of darkness, evil and magic, as well as beautiful wonders beyond your imagination. If you dare to journey into this land, I will be your guide, but be warned, I can not tell you if you will come out alive or not. You may discover that there is a much bigger power in Decepmyth than you ever dreamed of, and one of you holds the key to it.

Do you dare to venture into the land of Decepmyth?

Consider:

Do words have pictures?

Day 8

Ace was cornered. And wand-less. He wasn’t all that brave without his wand.

“How do you use this thing?” Volcano murmured, running her fire-tipped finger down the wand. She tried sticking it outwards and yelling “FIRE,” but all that happened was that orange flickers of flame from her hand  engulfed the wand.

“MY WAND!” Ace yelled in a panic. Surprised, Volcano dropped the wand. It hurled towards Ace, who was backed against the cave wall, and struck the bottom of his wizards’ robe. Immediately, the flames jumped from the wand onto Ace.

“Oops...” Volcano muttered in an only have-sheepish manner. Ace closed his eyes, waiting for the flames to touch his skin. He felt the heat travel up his legs. It wasn’t all that unpleasant, as the cavern was very cold. Ace heard a yelp of pain, a muttered extinguishing spell, and the traveling heat stopped. The cavern was full of the smell of burning clothes.

“What on earth were you-” Ace felt a hand grab his blackened robe, and he opened his eyes to see Pete the Trollslayer standing between him and Volcano.

“That’s just the point!” Maple interrupted, “we’re not even on earth anymore!”

“Er, sorry, I mean...” Ace stammered. Pete clenched and unclenched his fist, which was burned from touching the flaming wand. He shook his hand, as if trying to shake off the redness covering half of his thumb.

“Will you people stop playing around?” Danie stomped over, hands on her hips. Suddenly, everyone in the cavern stopped. The walls shuddered ominously. Then, a blast of air blew out of the cave depths.

“Uh-oh,” Volcano muttered.

“RUN!” Cloudy Dweller yelled. Her face was full of everything except fear as she leaped into the air and soared out of the cave opening. Will charged towards Curio, looking around for Kate. Kate, however, had sprung into action, jumping onto Curio’s broad, green back with her magic boots. Will was right behind her. He didn’t even need to tell Curio to fly. Brookeira tried to telekinetically propel herself forward, but it wasn’t working. The grumblings from within the cave grew louder. Squeak transformed himself into a flying pink unicorn (he was very flustered at the moment), and Danie hopped aboard his back as they desperately evacuated from the cave. No one knew exactly what was going on. Piper assumed that the cave was collapsing. Masked Piester thought that her friend THE BLASTER!!!!! was coming for a visit (this was wishful thinking on her part; it was not so. In reality, Piper was closer to the truth).

Baelfire was so intent on setting on fire to one of his many bright orange handkerchiefs that he didn’t realize what was going on at first. When he finally looked up, after failing to successfully burn his handkerchiefs (they must have been inflammable), Baelfire saw that the cave was empty, and something was making noises in the shadows of the cave. Something loud. Something big. Something that was coming closer. As terror suddenly struck Baelfire, he realized that he was not actually, deserted. Booksy Owly was desperately pushing the giant ice statue of Somebody towards Brookeira, who was standing at the cave entrance.

“Hurry!” Brookeira yelled over the noise of the advancing something. Booksy gave one last push against the life-sized ice statue, fear pulling her onward. The cold air slapped her in the face. Suddenly, frozen Somebody lost her balance and toppled forward. Brookeira had only a millisecond to concentrate on the ice block, but it was enough. Pushed by Brookeira’s amazing mind powers, Somebody shot out of the cave and into the darkness beyond. I hope she landed safely,  Booksy thought as she launched herself into the air, grabbing Brookeira’s shoulders. Down they went, not hearing Baelfire’s cries of “wait for me!” Baelfire was running to the edge of the cave in order to look down the mountainside when the roaring became so loud that it filled is ears. It sounded like a million sounds mixed together. Images began to fill his mind, and he was surprised to find that the pictures were all words, yet they were images as well. He didn’t feel scared anymore. Instead, he felt curious, and happy (a rather strange sort of happy) and actually quite a lot of other feelings that all seemed to be made of words. The something was standing right beside him.

Sometimes words have more power than we think we do.

Day 9

Elizabeth was cold. Or rather, she wasn’t. At least, not as cold as she should be. The snow felt sort of tingly under her, and the night sky (which was starless-Elizabeth noticed them and missed the constellations that she saw every night at home), wrapped around her like a cloak, pressing on her slightly. The snow felt soft and comfortable, rather like her bed. She should be in bed now. She should be asleep. How lovely this snowy and mystic night was...how calming and peaceful... and she was asleep. John was standing a few feet away, watching the nearby mountain rumble, and the terrified adventurers streaming from a large cave near the top. It was all rather comic, when there was nothing to be afraid of. John smiled into the darkness.

“Wren?”

“Here!”

“Misti?”

“Here!”

“Masked Piester?”

“Here!”

“Shifting Sands?”

“Not here!”

“Pete the Trollslayer?”

“Here!”

“Baelfire?” (silence) “Baelfire? BAELFIRE?”

Danie was calling role, and she was not liking what she was finding. Baelfire was missing. Booksy Owly was missing. Maple was missing. Brookeira was missing. Volcano was missing. And Squeak was missing. The remains of the group huddled together at a relatively safe distance from the shuddering mountain.

“Does anyone know where Baelfire is?” Danie asked. She received nothing in return but blank faces. She took a step back, than another, and felt something under her foot. Something that went

“Squeak! Squeaky!” Lying in the snow, there was a rubber rat, and she had stepped on it. The way its hair sort of stuck up in places... (do rats even have hair?), the way its black eyes shone... the way it went “squeak!” It was all so familiar. Danie bit her lip. This was a dangerous place. A scary place. A deceiving place. The rat, she knew, was her twin brother.

Baelfire was intrigued. Not fearful, but interested; curious. The mountain had stopped rumbling, and the roaring had ceased, yet the noise went on and on inside his head. What would he see if he turned around? What would happen? He wondered. Curiosity overtook him, so he quite wondering and turned around. At first, all he could see was a sort veil-except he couldn’t really see it, more like feel its presence. It was a veil of words; a cloud that triggered memories and emotions. These words were not visible, yet the air was thick with them. Then, Baelfire made out someone standing in the midst of the words. The figure was a tall man, with a curly beard and brown hair that was sticking up in the back. His shirt was untucked in the back, and, like many of the young adventurers, he wore no shoes. The most interesting thing about the stranger was that he had a pencil behind his ear-not an orange pencil, but a black one-, an old fashioned quill pen in his hand, and several more pens stuck in various pockets.

“‘Hullo,” Baelfire said. The man smiled, fingering the glossy raven feather pen in his hand. Baelfire realized that the words, sounds, and images were coming from the pen-as if the cold air was paper to write on. Baelfire tried to feel the words coming from the pen, as he had done earlier.

“A thousand words,” he muttered.

“Exactly,” said the man.
