Character: Foxpaw: a recent apprentice in SunClan's overflowing apprentice den due to the large amount of kits.  Foxpaw is a red she-cat with black ears and a white tail.

We will make up the characters as we go.  Enjoy!

Edemame says waik, I am awake silly!

Foxpaw proudly strutted away from the Highrock, her head held high.  SunClan chanted her new name. "Foxpaw, foxpaw, foxpaw!"  Foxpaw was glad to finally begin her training.  She had badly wanted to start for a long time now.  Rainpaw bounded up to her, her mew full of excitement, " I'm glad that you're finally an apprentice too!" she mewled " Let me show you the den."  Rainpaw had been a playmate of Foxpaw when they were both kits.  Now they even had the same mentor!  There was such an abundance of kits that each warrior had to take on two or three apprentices, a difficult task, but the clan was happy to have so many budding warriors.  Foxpaw let Rainpaw lead her away from the Highrock and across the clearing to the apprentice den-well one of them.  They had two now, the second built recently since there wasn't enough room for the apprentices.  Foxpaw walked into the shady hollow and sniffec around, trying to find a good spot to sleep later.  She eventually settled on a nest next to one that smelled of Rainpaw.  Rainpaw led her out of the den.  "C'mon you've had a long day, lets share a mouse."  Foxpaw was happy to oblige.

Sunpaw glanced over at the new apprentice Foxpaw, who was sharing a meal with Rainpaw. He watched for severel minutes as she laughed and munched with her friend, but was snapped out of his daze by a sharp rebuke from his mentor. "Come on, Sunpaw, we don't have all day! I want to patrol the borders and that's that!"

Sunpaw shook his golden, light brown-speckled coat and followed Windwhisper as she headed towards the exit of the camp. Windwhisper's second apprentice, Splashpaw, was waiting there. She smugly tossed her head and headed out with Windwhisper at her side. Sunpaw scowled and slumped along behind, fuming. Splashpaw was so stuck-up and rude, he couldn't stand it. A mew from behind him made him turn his head. Foxpaw was dashing up to him with Rainpaw at her heels. "Hi!" she chirped, full of energy. Her mentor, Adderstrike, was following the two apprentices, slightly out of breath. "Adderstrike thought we should join you on patrol. That's Okay, right?" Sunpaw opened his mouth, unsure of what to say, and asked Windwhisper what she thought. His mentor shrugged and nodded Okay. Together, the six cats padded out of the tunnel into the forest.

Vixtion says "zrow". I'm doing the cats, Vixtion, not you! So don't meow in front of me!

Foxpaw padded out into the forest, gazing around in excitement.  The only time she had been out of the camp before was when she and Rainpaw had been kits.  They had been curious and snuck out while the queens were napping.  Adderstrike had found them and brought them back to camp, with a fierce scolding.  But it had been worth it, it was wonderful out here.  Foxpaw had fallen behind, she bounded ahead to walk next to Rainpaw.

Adderstrike called to Foxpaw, "I'm going to give you a tour of our territory, ok?"  Foxpaw gave a vigorous nod.  They separated from the patrol, heading in the opposite direction.  Foxpaw stared back at Sunpaw.  Everyone said that the resembalance between him and their old leader, Sunstar was striking.  He was named Sunpaw after Sunstar.  Foxpaw wasn't sure, she had never seen Sunstar.  He had died a bit before she was born.  The only leader Foxpaw knew, was their current one, Moonstar.  Adderstrike led Rainpaw and Foxpaw through the forest.  He walked fast and Foxpaw was soon panting trying to keep up with him.

Rainpaw gave a mew of amusement, and her whiskers twitched.  "You'll get used to it."  Finally, Adderstrike skid to a stop.

"Alright, Foxpaw now we're going to have a hunting lesson."  Adderstrike lowered himself into a hunting crouch.  "Foxpaw, Rainpaw follow me. " Rainpaw lowered herself into a practiced position. Foxpaw tried to follow with more trouble.  Adderstrike looked over at her, "That will do for now."  Adderstrike's sharp eyes were fastened between two roots.  "See that mouse," he hissed. "It's all yours, Foxpaw."  Foxpaw lowered herself further to the ground.  She crept forward.  And leaped.  The mouse scuttled away, into the underbrush.  Foxpaw hissed, tempted to chase after it, but she knew it would be of no use.  Adderstrike watched her.

"Don't worry, its your first try."

"No!" she hissed.  "I will catch something.  Foxpaw perked her ears, she could here a scuffling.  She pinpointed the noise.  It was a squirrel, the fattest that Foxpaw had ever seen.  Foxpaw crouched.  She crept forward, determined to catch it.  The squirrel spotted Foxpaw and scurried up the tree.  Foxpaw gave a huge leap and landed in the tree, next to the squirrel.  Taking it by surprise, she neatly killed it with a bite to the back of the neck.  She took it in her mouth and jumped down from the tree.

Adderstrike stared at her, his eyes wide with fright.  "Never do that again!" he hissed.  She looked at him.

"Why?" Foxpaw meowed defiantly.  "I caught it, didn't I?"  Adderstrike shook his head.

"Never have I seen a cat do that; well everyone at camp will be surprised.  Let's cut this tour short."  He quickly recovered from his shock.

"Wow!" Rainpaw meowed in amazement. "How did you do that?"

Foxpaw shrugged.  "I have no idea!  But it was awesome right?"  Rainpaw nodded.

"It's as big as you!"

Sorry, that was really long!

Edemame says bwhc.

Foxpaw dropped her squirrel on the fresh-kill pile, which had almost doubled in size because of the newly overflowing apprentices' den. "Hello, Foxpaw." The voice made her jump. She swivelled around to find Moonstar standing behind her. "H-hello, Moonstar," She replied nervously. Ha she done something wrong? "I'd like to speak with you in my den, please," Moonstar said. "Okay," Foxpaw said, but Moonstar was already padding away. Foxpaw hurrried to catch up. She paused outside Moonstar's den, not quite sure what to do. "It's alright, Foxpaw, you can come in. You're not in trouble," Said Moonstar in a slightly amused voice. Foxpaw breathed a sigh of relief and entered the den. "You wanted to speak with me?" Foxpaw said, sounding a lot braver than she felt. Moonstar looked kindly upon the young apprentice. "Yes. Why don't you sit down? It would be a lot more comfortable. I would like to speak with you about your catch today, Foxpaw." Foxpaw gulped. She had done something wrong! Adderstrike had seemed frightened when she jumped down from the tree, and he had told her never to do it again. But it couldn't have been that bad, could it? It couldn't have frightened him enough that he would talk to the clan leader, could it? "Foxpaw, your catch was something that not even experienced warriors could pull off without injuring themselves. It was absolutely astonishing that you could do that," Said the leader, her eyes geaming with pride. Foxpaw's eyes widened. "You're not mad at me?" she said. "Of course I'm not mad at you! Your performance today was spectacular!" Replied Moonstar. "B-but Adderstrike was really scared when I came down from the tree," Foxpaw said, puzzled. "And he seemed really mad at me, he told me never to do it again," she added. Moonstar looked at the frightened apprentice for a moment, and then said, "Adderstrike was only mad at you because he cares for you. He didn't want you to get hurt." Foxpaw shook her head to clear it of all the confusing thoughts. "But he-" she started, but Moonstar cut her off. "Foxpaw, I would be honored to eat your squirrel. Would you please retrieve it for me?" The leader said. In a daze, Foxpaw stood up slowly and went to retrieve the squirrel.

Sorry this was so long!! I just couldn't stop writing!Smile

As Foxpaw stepped out of the den she was glowing with pride.  To be praised by the leader!  And it was only her first day of training!  After she had brought the squirrel to Moonstar, who had declared it too big to eat by herself and sent Foxpaw to fetch the deputy, and her best friend Dawnfeather, to help her.  When Foxpaw stepped out of the den for the third time apprentices crowded around her asking about the squirrel and her talk with Moonstar. Rainpaw, Badgerpaw, Hawkpaw, and Pinepaw offered her a mouse and some rest.  Foxpaw was happy to oblige.  She tore into the mouse, savoring the juicy flesh.  Then, she answered the excited questions of the other apprentices who eagerly listened, hanging on to Foxpaw's every word.  Foxpaw gladly shared the day's events, basking in the attention.  Other apprentices crowded on the sides, hanging back.  Foxpaw looked over at them, she could tell that some were shy, and some jealous.  Pinepaw nudged her shoulder.

"Foxpaw, Foxpaw!  Tell us how you caught the squirrel again!  Foxpaw yawned, but went over the story again.  She was starting to get tired, and her audience had thinned.  She knew it was time to turn in.  Foxpaw heavily padded over to the den, and curled up in  her nest.  The long day had finally hit her, and she quickly fell asleep.

Foxpaw was awakened by a sound in the night.  She got up to investigate, it was the rustling of many pawsteps.  She stepped out of the den and looked around.  Nothing.

A yowl sounded, "Attack!"

Splashpaw was jolted from her sleep suddenly as a yowl sounded across the clearing. She stumbled to her paws, crashing around the already cramped apprentices' den in confusion until she was spewed out of it. Shaking her head sleepily, she watched in horror as cats poured into the clearing, their muscles lean and hard and their teeth glistening.

One particularily large cat walked to the front of the bristling mess as her Clan bumped about in tired confusion. B-but that's Owlstar! she thought, shocked. Owlstar suddenly crouched and flicked his tail, yowling "Attack!" once more. The HollowClan cats leaped forwards, mrowling battle cries, and the ForestClan camp became a writhing mess of cats. Splashpaw felt weight press down on her as she watched all the senior warriors battling for their lives. Then she swallowed heavily, pushing down her fears, and leapt into the mess. She locked on to one warrior battling with Adderstrike at the corner of the clearing and fastened her teeth into his tail. The warrior yowled and spun around, kicking out at Splashpaw with his hind leg.

His paw struck her in the chest and she collapsed with an oomph  on the ground. The warrior smiled and jumped on her back. Remembering one of her lessons, Splashpaw went limp and waited for him to get onto her, then thrust up her back, throwing the warrior away. She spun around and delivered a few quick blows, strikking him in his arms and stomach. A growing light of confidence bloomed in her as she began to make sense of the chaos. She gave the warrior one last kick and rushed off. A heavy weight suddenly landed on her flattened her to the ground. A Hollowclan warrior was on top of her, clawing her back. A jolt of pain ran through her, but she managed to wriggle out and meet him face-to-face. They began to combat, flashing paws whipping out at each other. But even though she was skilled, eventually the warrior began to overcome her.

When he knocked out her legs, she thought it was done for. She saw his falling claws...

Then a golden shape crashed into him, bowling him away. She looked up to see Sunpaw stading over her, panting with exertion. He glanced back at her, and she struggled to her feet, avoiding his gaze. Together they began to fight the warrior, striking him from opposite sides unti the cat fell down with a thump. Sunpaw nodded to her and raced off to fight a HollowClan she-cat with Foxpaw on the other side of the clearing. Splashpaw turned around and was ready to fight again when a loud yowl sounded over the camp.

"Enough!" The battling fell still and all cats turned to look at Moonstar, who was perched upon HighRock, bristling with anger. "Owlstar! Why have you come and attacked our Clan? Explain yourself!" Her voice had suhc a ringing authority many HollowClan cats flniched back a bit. Owlstar, hwoever, stood strong.

"ForestClan has invaded our borders one too many times. We find your scent reeking on treees on our land. We've come to take it back." Moonstar regarded him with thought. "I have found no signs of our trespassing on your borders," she meowed. "Perhaps you are mistaken?" Owlstar's fur bristled at the hidden insult, but he forced it to lay flat and let her continue. "In any means, this fighting should stop. Go home now before anything worse happens." With that, she bounded down from HighRock and stood at the front of her Clan. Slowly, the HollowClan cats moved away, disappearing into the night. the Clan began to disparse into tight little groups, some talking and some moving back to their dens. Splashpaw sat down and began to lick her wounds, especially the long one on her back. This hadn't been her first battle. She was almost done with her training and had fought in battles before. The sound of pawsteps behind Splashpaw alerted her to someone approaching.

She turned to Moonstar standing there. Splashpaw quickly leapt to her paws and turned to face her leader. "Moonstar... I-" Moonstar smiled, cutting off Splashpaw. "It's alright, Splashpaw. In fact, it's better. Seeing the way you foght today... I think the Clan has a new warrior to be made."

Cats lay around the clearing, licking their wounds and ranting about the nerve of HollowClan.  Rippleriver, the medicine cat, rushed around tending to the wounded cats.  Rainpaw and Foxpaw had fought side by side, they were able to defeat apprentices and a few warriors, who ran back to their camp yowling.  Foxpaw hadn't had any battle training yet, but she still fought by copying Rainpaw's moves.

Moonstar's voice rang out from the Highrock.  "All cats old enough to catch their own prey, gather beneath the Highrock for a Clan meeting."  Muttering, cats moved closer to the Highrock.  Moonstar spoke again.  "Splashpaw, come up here."  Splashpaw bounded over to the Highrock.  "Today, Splashpaw has proved her worth in battle, it is time for her to become a warrior."  Splashpaw blushed, but her eyes shone.  "I, Moonstar, leader of SunClan call upon my warrior
ancestors to look down on this apprentice, she has trained hard to
understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend her to you
as a warrior in her turn.  Splashpaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and to protect and defend your Clan even at the cost of your life?"

Splashpaw spoke, sounding sincere and grave, "I do."

"Then by the powers of StarClan I give you your warrior name.  Splashpaw, from this moment on you will be known as Splashheart.  StarClan honors your courage and skill and we welcome you as a full warrior of SunClan."

The Clan chanted her new name.  "Splashheart, Splashheart, Splashheart!"  Foxpaw congratulated her.  After the noise died down and the Clan split up, Adderstrike walked up to her.

"Hey, Foxpaw I think that we need to do some battle training."  Adderstrike and Foxpaw pushed through the tunnel to go to the training clearing.  Rainpaw was off on a patrol.  They entered the clearing.  Adderstrike stood in front of her.  "Attack me."

Foxpaw stuttered, "B-b-but."

"Attack me."  Foxpaw charged straight at him with her claws sheathed.  He sidestepped.  She ran behind him and attempted to leap on him.  He whirled around, ready for her every move.  Eventually, Foxpaw fell to the ground frustrated and exhausted.  There was a gleam in his eye.  "Get up."  Foxpaw scrambled to her feet.  "Try again."  He turned around, his back toward her.  She leaped onto his back, out of his reach.  Adderstrike dropped onto the ground and rolled, squashing her.  She struggled to get out from under him.  He got up.  Glancing at her, he mewed in amusement.  "When using the leap-and-hold always watch out for the drop-and-roll."  Foxpaw scowled, this was harder than she had thought it would be.  "Again." he commanded.  He turned his back to her.  Foxpaw didn't want to use the same move,  she knew that he was ready.  She decided to take Adderstrike by surprise.  Foxpaw took his tail in her teeth and yanked.  This took him by surprise and he fell.  She pinned him down and gave his belly a pretend rake.  Panting, Adderstrike got up.  "Good, that's enough for today."  Now, the gleam was in Foxpaw's eye.  Adderstrike looked at her sternly.  "You know I could have beat you."

Foxpaw's eyes widened.  "What?"

"You needed some encouragement."  Foxpaw sighed, of course he could have beat her!  He was  an experienced warrior, and she was a young apprentice.  She had been foolish to think that she could beat him.  "Hey, don't be discouraged, remember this is your first day of training, and that was good.  If you are going to be discouraged that easily, then you'll never become a warrior.  Foxpaw straightened up.  "Now, before we get back to camp, lets catch a little something to bring back.

Foxpaw groaned, she was sore all over. "Do we have to?"

"Yes, we do.  What?  Do you think you can't catch anything?"

Foxpaw glared at him.  She knew that he was trying to appeal to her proud side, but it was working!  "I can catch something if I want too! she snapped.

Adderstrike glared right back. "I am your mentor, not your friend, and you need to be respectful."  Foxpaw muttered an apology.  She crouched down and perked up her ears.  A mouse?  Yes!  She could see it nibbling on a seed.  Foxpaw crept forward, acreful whre she placed her paws.  Then, she leaped and pinned the mouse.  She finished it off with a killing bite.  Adderstrike looked proud.  "You learn fast."  Foxpaw glowed with the praise.   Adderstrike caught a vole and a mouse.  Each cat carreid their catch back to camp.  Foxpaw dropped her prey on the fresh-kill pile.  Adderstrike spoke to Foxpaw, " Leafbare is coming soon, and food will be scarce.  Tomorrow we will continue that tour and go hunting.  That night Splashpaw sat vigil and Foxpaw curled up in her mossy nest, after another long day.

Foxpaw woke up, blinked, and stretched. She was about to head outside when a drop of water landed on her neck, startling her. She shook it off, stepped over numerous sleeping apprentices, and poked her head outside the den. Foxpaw was immediatly drenched. She hissed in disapproval, but knew she had battle training with Adderstrike, so she stepped all the way out and trotted over to the fresh-kill pile, hoping to get a small mouse or vole before her training. She selected a nice plump vole and settled down to eat.

"Let's go, Foxpaw! We need to go quickly, so come along!" She heard Adderstrike call. Foxpaw quickly gulped down the rest of her vole and ran to the camp entrance to meet her mentor. "Can Rainpaw come with us, Adderstrike?" She asked as he was about to step outside the camp. He stopped and turned around to face Foxpaw with an exasperated look on his face. "Foxpaw, I've told you this before; Rainpaw has been an apprentice for longer than you have, and therefore has more experience. She can't tag along for all of your training sessions or she"ll never learn anything! Now stop dawdling and let's go already! I have other things to do today, you know," Adderstrike said, stalking out of camp with is tail waving in the air.

Foxpaw ducked her head as she followed Adderstrike through the forest, struggling to keep up with his fast pace. Adderstrike seemed frustrated for some reason today, but Foxpaw couldn't figure out why. She bumped into him when they reached the training hollow, and that made him even more agitated.

"Okay, we"ll start with a very basic move. I'll demonstrate. First, jump onto my back like you're going to attack me," Adderstrike instructed. Foxpaw hestitated, then leapt onto his back and held on tight. Adderstrike went limp, so she loosened her grip and was about to get off, when he suddenly reared up and flipped her onto her back, exposing her underbelly. "Now you try. First go limp, an then rear up and flip me over," said Adderstrike. They practiced the move until sunhigh, when Adderstrike finally called it a day.

"Let's go refresh the scent markers before we go back, I don't think the dawn patrol went out today," Adderstrike informed the young apprentice. Foxpaw held her head high as they set out, she had perfected the move in only a day, and Adderstrike had said that he was proud of her. They finally reached the Iceclan border and were renewing their scent markers when Foxpaw heard a snarl from the reeds on the other side. She whipped her head up to find an Iceclan patrol hissing at them. Adderstrike had heard them also, and he was now facing the patrol. "We were only refreshing our scent markers, and last time I checked, that's not against the Warrior code," he spat. The leader of the patrol stepped forward, who Foxpaw recognized as the deputy, Spikeheart. "We have not come to critique your border marking. We have come to retrieve one of our kits."

Adderstrike's eyes widened.  He hadn't been expecting this.  Foxpaw was shocked.  The IceClan warriors stared at them with hostility in their eyes.  When Adderstrike recovered he narrowed his eyes and hissed.

"What?!  We don't have your kits.  What would we want with them?  And what kind of low-down Fox Hearts do you think we are?"

Spikeheart bristled.  "Don't play games.  This against the warrior code.  I want to see Moonstar."

Adderstrike took a deep breath, trying to calm himself.  "Look, I'm not playing games.  I am sorry that one of your kits is missing, and of course you are worried, but my Clan is innocent.  We don't want your kits and we have plenty of our own."  The fur on Spikeheart's shoulders settled a bit.

"All the same, we want to search your territory and speak to Moonstar."

Adderstrike spoke calmly, "I will take you to Moonstar and you may discuss this with her further."  The patrol started to step over the border.  "Only two of you will come, the rest will wait here."  Spikeheart didn't argue, he was clearly desperate to find the kit.

Spikeheart ordered one of the warriors.  "Frogpelt, come."  Frogpelt and Spikeheart stepped over the border and followed Foxpaw and Adderstrike back to the camp.  When the four cats stepped through the tunnel the SunClan cats stared, and started to whisper.  Adderstrike stiffly walked towards the leader's den.  The IceClan cats followed, seemingly unaware of the commotion that they were causing.  Moonstar stepped out of her den to meet them.

"Why have you come?" Moonstar demanded coldly.

Spikeheart spoke,"One of our kits has been stolen and SunClan and all the other clans are suspects."

"I am sorry to hear of your trouble, but I am sure that no one in my Clan would have done something like that.  As we are blessed with an abundance of kits.  There is no need to steal yours."

"Nevertheless, we would like to request permission to search your camp."

"Go ahead, you will find nothing of interest."  Spikeheart and Frogpelt searched every den thoroughly sniffing for signs of a kit.  They found nothing.  Moonstar looked slightly smug.

The IceClan cats looked discouraged.  "Thank you."  They started to leave.

Moonstar called out to them.  "Stop!  Splashheart and Dustpelt will escort you back to the border."

1 day earlier...

Adderstrike bounded through the dark forest, the kit swinging as he ran.  His heart thudded.  Wait, he needed to mask the scent of IceClan on the kit, burning his nostrils.  A pile of dung lay near.  Yuck!  But it would work.  He rolled the kit in the dung masking the scent.  When he came upon a stream he would wash it off, but the scent would linger, drowning out the IceClan smell.  The kit mewled.  Adderstrike muttered to it.  "I don't like the smell either."  Adderstrike felt a spark of hope.  He could live like this.  He and Silverflower could continue to meet in secret and when the kit was older  she could meet her mother.  And he could meet the other kit, who would stay in IceClan.  But who would raise the kit? Aha!  He could convince Acornstripe, who had  birthed just today, to take her.  They could say that another had came in the night and no oe would ever know.  Adderstrike entered the camp.  He slipped into the nursery quietly, careful not to disturb the other sleeping queens and kits.  He gently shook Acornstripe awake.  "Acornstripe, I found this kit in the woods, can you keep it?  We could say that you had another in the night.  It could be our secret."  Acornstripe's eyes widened, but she was softhearted.

"Alright."  The kit relaxed and snuggled in next to Acornstripe.  Acornstripe softened even more, she couldn't say no now.  Adderstrike's story was suspicious and  she suspected him, but she also knew that he was absolutely loyal and it was a poor, defenseless kit.  She could do this.

(February 7, 2016 - 8:35 pm)

Even though Acornstripe was forbidden to leave the nursery, she heard the commotion of the Iceclan warriors in the camp, and began to panic. That was too close. Way too close. Hopefully Adderstrike would come soon to check on the abadoned kit and take her back to Iceclan. Acornstripe did have her suspicions, though. If this kit was his own, she certainly did not want to break the warrior code by caring for a kit that was only partly from Sunclan. But on the other paw, no one else would care for the kit. She and Adderstrike had been friends when they were both kits, and she trusted him to always be loyal to Sunclan, but the thought that he might have broken the warrior code was almost unbearable.

Once the Iceclan warriors had left and the camp was back to normal, Adderstrike quietly slipped into the nursery to check on his kit. Before he had departed with the kit the previous day,  he and Silverflower had decided on names. The one in Sunclan would be called Flowerkit, in honor of her mother, and the one in Iceclan was to be called Owlkit, because of her enormous blue eyes. The trick was going to be convincing Acornstripe to name the kit what he wanted. While pondering this, he padded quietly in between the queens' nests until he came to Acornstripe's. "Oh thank goodness, Adderstrike. I was hoping you would come soon. I think this is the kit that the Iceclan warriors were talking about! We need to take her back. If we don't, we won't be able to keep it a secret forever," Acornstripe said. Adderstrike shifted uncomfortably. There wasn't any other way he could keep the kit in Sunclan without telling Acornstripe his secret. He took a deep breath. "W-well, this kit might not even be from Iceclan, Acornstripe. Don't you think we should wait a little bit until she gets a little older and we can see if she looks like a cat from Iceclan?" he said. Acornstripe looked at him warily. "Come back tonight and we can discuss it in private. Wait until your whole den is asleep and then come back," she told him, not wanting any other queens to overhear their conversation. Adderstrike tried not to look too worried. "Okay. I'll see you tonight, then," He said. Then he stole one last look at his beloved kit, and left.

Foxpaw's mouth was still hanging open when the Iceclan warriors left. She turned to Rainpaw who was standing next to her. "Why do you think Iceclan thinks we stole one of their kits? Why not one of the other clans?" She asked Rainpaw. "I don't know. That was really weird. I think I'm just gonna go take a nap now, okay Foxpaw? See you later," she responded. Foxpaw was trying to comprehend all of this when she saw Adderstrike quickly padding into the nursery. She was about to follow him when she heard Dovewing, one of the elders, calling her. She took one last glance at the nursery, and then hurried off to change Dovewing's bedding.

I will doing Sunpaw from now on, then.

Dappled sunlight slid across Sunpaw's back as he padded through the forest with Windwhisper. After Splashheart had become a warrior, she had been even more insufferable, but at least he had amentor all to himself now. Besides, it wouldn't be long--a moon, even--before he himself became a warrior. He smiled with giddy joy as he thought of that day. Focusing his attention on Windwhisper, he asked "What are we going to do today?" She looked down and said "I thought we'd do some battle training. After yesterday's battle, it'd be good to get some of that in." He nodded, pleased. He liked battle training, using all moves disposable to defeat an enemy through cunning.

Once they arrived in the training clearing, Windwhisper turned to face him. "Attack me," she said simply. Sunpaw slid into a crouch, his eyes darting back and forth. He was about to leap for her back when he noticed her eyes watching his. She's trying to pinpoint where I'll jump, he realized. So before attacking, he stared straight at her back and jumped, aiming for her left with sheathed claws. It caught Windwhisper by surprise, and he even managed to get a few blows in before she flipped him over and pressed him to the ground. "Nice try," she smiled. "Good thinking, aiming for my left but looking at my back. You pick this up quick." Sunpaw purred, warmed by the praise of his mentor. "Let's try it again."

When the sun was highest in the sky, Windwhisper finally stepped back and said they were done for the day. "You can go out on an evening patrol later, but for now, get something to eat." Sunpaw was too worn out to reply, so he just nodded. It had been a very difficult and fast-paced training session. Windwhisper had gone through his excersises speedily, her paws flashing. When Sunpaw got back to camp, he breathed a sigh of relief and headed straight for the fresh-kill pile. Picking out a squirrel from the top, he settled down with it and began to eat famishly. A spurt of chatter alerted him of someone coming out of the elder's den. Foxpaw emerged, covered in bedding, saying goodbye to Dovewing. She passed Rainpaw on the way, but Rainpaw turned her head away and ignored her. Sunpaw wondered what made them act this way. Usually Foxpaw and Rainpaw were the best of friends...

He shook his head and turned back to his squirrel, finishing it off. Standing up and stretching, he felt his aching muscles strain. It felt good, but still a little painful. I'm sure some rest will ease it, he thought, heading for the apprentice's den. Slumping into his nest, he sighed in pleasure as the moss cradled him softly. His eyes cracked open the slightest as someone else enerted the den. He smelled Foxpaw, but he couldn't stop himself from slipping into a deep sleep.

Foxpaw woke up and stretched, at the same time Adderstrike had finally convinced Acornstripe to take the kit for good.  He had told her the story, and she had softened even more.  It wouldn't hurt the Clan either way, but it would hurt Adderstrike one way.  She and Adderstrike had been friends for a long time and it wouldn't be betraying the Clan, it would be betrayal to Adderstrike if she didn't take Flowerkit.  Flowerkit would grow up happily, and Acornstripe could act as her mother.  She already felt protective over the kit.  Foxpaw was excited, she was going to see Acornstripe's kits today.  It was sunrise and only a few cats were up.  Foxpaw saw Adderstrike pad out of the nursery. "Adderstrike!" she called to him from across the clearing, "Were you going to see Acornstripe's kits."

He hesitated for a moment, "Yes."

"How are they?"

Adderstrike smiled.  "Beautiful."

"Can I go see them now?"

"Later, Acornstripe is tired, she is resting."  Foxpaw was a bit dissapointed, but she knew that the queen needed to rest after her recent birth.

"How many are there?"

"Five."

"What are we doing for training today?"

Adderstrike looked at bit exasperated by all of her questions, but he answered, " More battle training."  Foxpaw started to ask another question, but before she could he quickly walked off to the fresh-kill pile.  What was with him?  Something was clearly wrong, he had been so surly for the past several days.  Foxpaw put it aside for now.  She knew that it really wasn't her business, but she couldn't help being curious.  She had mastered many battle moves, but he hardly praised her at all.  She had learned, in a fairly short time span, the Duck and twist, the Half-turn Belly rake, Badger Defense, Tail yank, teeth grip, Scruff shake, Upright Lock, Play dead, Back kick, Belly rake, Front paw blow,  Forepaw slash, and Leap and hold.  She knew that she still had much more to learn, but she thought that Adderstrike should be proud of her.  She was almost caught up to Rainpaw!  Adderstrike called to her.  "Go wake up Rainpaw and eat something quickly.  Shes coming for battle training.  Foxpaw grabbed two voles from the fresh-kill pile and nudged Rainpaw awake.

"C'mon sleepy head, wake up it's time to train."  Rainpaw muttered and rolled over batting at Foxpaw with a sheathed paw.  "Adderstrike is going to get mad."  Rainpaw groaned, but sat up.  They ate their voles in the den.  She and Rainpaw hadn't been as close lately.  Rainpaw never seemed to be around when Foxpaw was, and she always seemed to be exhausted.  "Whats up with you, you're always tired and I never see you."

Rainpaw growled disagreeably and muttered something about long days and being busy.  They scrambled out of the den.  Adderstrike was waiting outside, impatient.

"What took you so long?"  He didn't wait for an answer, but bounded through the tunnel, the two apprentices following.  Both Adderstrike and Rainpaw were grumpy and tired that day.  When they reached the clearing, Splashheart was there, waiting for them.  Foxpaw looked at Adderstrike for an explanation.

"You two are going to learn something new today, partner fighting."

Foxpaw looked at Adderstrike in confusion.  "What do you mean?"

Splashheart explained,"Two warriors each protect each others backs, while fending off attackers on either side.  This can be very dangerous to the enemies, and useful for you.  You're going to try it today."  This was good.  Maybe this would bring Rainpaw closer to Foxpaw again.  Foxpaw and Rainpaw stood back-to-back.  Adderstrike stood in front of  Rainpaw and Splashheart stood in front of Foxpaw.  It was hard work, staying together, and at the same time fighting. But by the end of the session, both apprentices had shown a lot of improvement.  Adderstrike finally decided that the girls could call it a day.  They walked home slowly, muscles aching.

Rainpaw's head was swimming with questions.  Should she tell Foxpaw?  Would Foxpaw understand?  They were best friends and Rainpaw didn't like that they were growing apart, but she was so tired lately because of it.  In the end, she decided to tell Foxpaw.  That way she wouldn't be mad, she would understand Rainpaw's exhaustion.  Or would she?  And there was also the question of the medicine cat thing.  She was already breaking the warrior code.  But could she break it more.  Be with a medicine cat from another clan and be a medicine cat?  It would certainly make it easier.  Medicine cat rules were different , she could talk to him more often, without sneaking off, or arousing suspicioun.  But Foxpaw was a loyal sunClan cat.  Could she keep the secret?  And Rainpaw was still loyal, could she keep the secret?  Could she do this?

Sun-down was beginning to settle as the four cats plodded through the tunnel and into the Sunclan camp. Foxpaw managed to catch up with Rainpaw before she slipped off to the apprentice's den. "Hey, I don't know about you, but I'm starving. Want to get something to eat?" She asked tentatively. Rainpaw hesitated for a moment, and then said, "Sure. I'm pretty hungry too." Foxpaw breathed an inner sigh of relief as they made their way over to the fresh-kill pile. Foxpaw happened to glance over her shoulder to see Beechpaw, who had been made an apprentice just a few days before her, glance at her for a moment, then look away. She stopped and looked at him, tilting her head slightly. Did he need something? If so, couldn't he just call out to her? Rainpaw stopped and looked at her. "Something wrong?" She asked. "No, I'm okay," Foxpaw replied, shaking her head. Rainpaw shrugged her shoulders and started padding away. She took one last look at Beechpaw, and then hurried to catch up with her friend.

Rainpaw took a deep breath. Should she tell Foxpaw? Maybe not all of it, I could just tell her that I want to be a medicine cat instead of a warrior, she thought. Yes. That would work. Wouldn't it? Foxpaw was almost finished with her thrush, and Rainpaw thought that this was the perfect opportunity (and maybe even the only opportunity for a while) to tell her. "Look Foxpaw, I've been thinking," she started. Foxpaw's head snapped up, but she didn't look angry, just intruiged. This was a good start. "Maybe the warrior path isn't the right path for me. I don't like to hurt cats, I like to heal them. I've been thinking about becoming a medicine cat."

Foxpaw's eyes widened. That would mean that Rainpaw wouldn't train with her, fight alongside her, march into battle with her, anything! "Please don't get mad at me," Rainpaw pleaded. "I'm not mad at you, it's just a little-well, unexpectd. But I'm not mad at you," Foxpaw assured her. "You-you're not? Really? We'll still be friends?" The older apprentice said, relief washing over her. "Of course I'm not mad at you, and of course we'll still be friends! Even when you're old and grumpy and we're both in the elder's den, I'll still be your best friend."

Beechpaw watched the two friends sharing a thrush, and purred softly. I wish I still had a friend like that, he thought to himself. Stupid Reedkit. Brothers are just dumb. Why'd he have to get Greencough, why not me? Beechpaw thought bitterly. You could have a new friend like that, if you'd just get up the nerve to go talk to Foxpaw! He told himself. Finally, he gave his head a mighty shake, clearing it of all the confusing thoughts except for one. He was going to be the best warrior there had ever been, the strongest, noblest, bravest, wisest of them all! But he knew that that was going to take a lot of hard work and practice, and he didn't need any distractions. He would prove everyone wrong and make Reedkit proud.
