Chatterbox: Inkwell

Random thing I wrote just because I felt like it! It’s not very good. :(

Abigail reached for a Post-it just as balletandbow walked into her room.

“Folding paper again?” her stepsister playfully rolled her eyes at her.

“Yep! I just learned how to fold origami butterflies on a YouTube tutorial.”

“You and your tutorials, Abi.” balletandbow set her dance bag onto the floor of her sister’s room. “Don’t use up all the Post-its!”

Abi finished folding her creation, setting it down on the desk she was sitting on before standing up and going to the window to open it.

As soon as she pushed the glass window upwards, a strong breeze blew in, blowing Abi’s yellow paper butterfly off of the table. Balletandbow reached for it, but there was no need. Before it hit the ground, it started flapping its wings!

“Abi . . .” Ballet stared at it in wonder. “Abi! Come look!” Abigail turned, her mouth falling open at the sight of the former sticky note fluttering in the air, its pale yellow wings fragile as, well, paper.

“This is amazing,” they both whispered in unison. “This is a miracle.”

The two stepsisters both watched it for a moment, mesmerized. The balletandbow shook herself out of her “trance”.

“Does it still fly if the window’s closed?” she wondered. Without any words, Abigail turned and reclosed the window. It fell, dropping lightly on Abi’s bed.

“Maybe not. I’ll open the window again.”

They watched as the piece of paper came back to life. “This is amazing,” Abigail whispered. As if on cue, the butterfly started flitting towards the window.

“NO!” shouted balletandbow, and the two girls quickly started for the window. Too late, it flew out.

Without thinking, Ballet leaped out of the window to follow it. She screamed as she fell towards the garden below her. Abi’s bedroom, like most bedrooms,  was on the second floor.

Luckily, Cho Chang just happened to be taking a walk in their neighborhood, and she started running towards her friends’ house when she saw her best friend, balletandbow, jumping out the window.

That was terrible. I’ll continue later.

Cho couldn’t make it in time. There was no way she could dash up the yard and the garden in time to slow Ballet’s fall, and even if she could run that fast, how would she save her? Catch her Superman style? No way.

Thinking quickly, she whipped out her wand. “Uh, Wingardium Leviosa!” Right before balletandbow hit the ground, she started to rise up in the air, floated for a bit, then dropped and landed on her feet.

“The butterfly!” was the first thing Ballet could think of saying. “Where did it go?”

Cho blinked at her in disbelief.

“Oh, yeah, thanks for saving me. Nice wandwork. Now where did the butterfly go?”

“You jumped out of the window, almost killed yourself, for a butterfly?!

“I wouldn’t have died!”

Before Cho could answer, Abi burst out of the door.

“What was that for?!” she shouted. “Jumping out the window!!!!”

“It’s not every day that an origami creation turns into a real, flapping butterfly,” balletandbowsaid defiantly.

“Wait, hold on,” Cho cut in. “A piece of paper turned . . .”

“Yup.” Abi replied.

“But that’s not possible!”

“Where did it go?”

A voice from behind the three startled them both.

“You won’t find your origami butterfly anymore.”
