Writing Prompt Boot Camp

~~~
I'm doing a fourteen-day boot camp where I'm given a prompt a day, and I thought that I'd post them on the CB for some motivation! You guys are all so supportive and encouraging, please give me some feedback!
Day One's prompt is about breaking up with writer's block. It is, "It’s time for you and Writer’s Block to part ways. Write a letter breaking up with Writer’s Block, starting out with, “Dear Writer’s Block, it’s not you, it’s me …”
Here it is!
Dear Writer’s Block,
It’s not you, it’s me, but I have to break up with you.
You see, our relationship has become toxic. I know you mean well, but you’re being clingy, hanging on to me when I don’t want you around. You’re stopping me from writing, from using my imagination, from exercising my brain. You stopped me from winning a writing award, and I fear that if we stay together, I’ll lose many more.
Last summer, I stared at the computer screen for hours, trying to think of something to write. It was painful. I had headaches, sorrowfully typing out words, forcing them, begging them to come. I lost time, I lost so much precious time. I’m sorry, Writer’s Block. I can’t let that happen again.
I have to let you go. We’ve been dating for too long now, gradually getting tired of each other. We’ve fought, we’ve caused each other stress. You see, it’s for your own good as well as mine. And besides, I’ve fallen for someone else. Someone named Imagination. I hope you find someone you love as well.
Please don’t let our breakup be bitter. We’ve had memories together, and I want to be able to reminisce and look back on them. We’ve spent time together, but I want to open a new chapter of my life. Goodbye, Writer’s Block, and I wish you well.
Sincerely,
Mei
Day 2's prompt is, "You bump into an ex-lover on Valentine’s Day—the one whom you often call 'The One
That Got Away. What happens?"
Here it is!
At first glance, she looked like an ordinary woman.
She had a cat. She had a house. She wore her long hair in a braid down her back. If you just met her, you’d think she was pretty, yet you’d think that she was normal. But when the sun set from the sky and the moon lit the night, she would sing to the stars. Her voice was unearthly, and it could do strange things. Things that no man would want in a girlfriend.
It was Valentine’s Day. The snow streamed down like a waterfall, filling the air. She was coming home from work like any woman, stopping by the grocery store like an ordinary person. The sun had not yet set in the sky. All that was on her mind was the food that she was going to buy. Even though it was Valentine’s Day, she wasn’t thinking about her ex. She wasn’t thinking about the One That Got Away.
But he was there, down in the apples section.
Recidon.
She didn’t know what to do. She wasn’t scared, of course, but she couldn’t decide whether to confront him or not.
“Camena,” he turned around. His face had a look of shock on it for one second, but that was quickly wiped away. “Long time no see.”
She walked towards him. “I don’t understand, Recidon,” she whispered, but he could hear every word clearly. “How were you able to resist my trance?”
Camena flashed back to her last night with him. She had been singing one of her strange songs, the songs that could convince him to do anything. She had already taken all his money, his valuables, and she had been singing a song to make him hurt his mother. The music had been beautiful, her voice hitting notes that weren’t humanly possible, her face glowing in the moonlight, the words haunting and stirring. Her voice dark, controlling.
It had previously been so easy to control him. Her songs were the string, he was her puppet. He had even broken the law for her.
But this night was different.
Somehow, he had escaped her hypnotic control. Somehow, he left her.
“I realized what you were,” Recidon said. “You operate on darkness. The night gives you power. The chains you wove around me are linked by greed and hatred. But you unknowingly guided me to a key, a key that released me.”
“What was the key?”
“Love. I thought I was in love with you, but that was an illusion, a trick. I loved my mother, and when you sang about her, I was given clarity. I realized what your voice had done to me. Guided by my love for my mother, I escaped your trance.”
Camena thought for a moment. “That makes sense,” she said. “I’ll remember not to do that for my next victim.”
“You won’t have a next victim.”
“Why do you say that?”
“Because I learned your craft. Love and light fuels me, and the powers of the day grant me rights to save other men from the trap of your voice.”
Before she could process this, Recidon began to sing.
Day 3's prompt is, "One Day you come into work and find a cookie mysteriously placed on your desk. Grateful
to whoever left this anonymous cookie, you eat it. The next morning you come in and find
another cookie. This continues for months until one Day a different object is left—and this
time there’s a note."
It was a small book.
I picked up the note beside it. It read in fancy handwriting, Meet me on page 54.
I picked up the little book. It was dark green, with no title and yellowed pages. Meet me on page 54? What was that supposed to mean?
My breath hitching, I opened it and flipped to page 54. On it was a picture of a young woman, about 20. She appeared to be casting some sort of spell, waving a wand with a shelf of potions in the background. I touched the picture.
The world disappeared. My vision turned to a blurry golden, everything blurred except for the book in front of me. The pages started to turn wildly, blowing my hair back and causing me to flinch. It was almost hypnotic, like I was meditating and focused intently on the pages.
I was in this state for about a minute until the pages stopped flipping. I looked around. I was in the picture! The woman was standing in front of me, holding her wand in her left hand.
“You came,” she said.
“Who are you? How is this possible?”
“My name is Vita. I’m a witch in the land of Yelyria. You were able to come into the story because I created a portal to your world. I’ve been leaving the cookies because I’ve been watching you, and I think you’re the right person to help me.”
“Help you with what?”
“I need a person of the real world to teach magic to.”
Today's prompt is, "You’re at work and you print something personal (and sensitive). Unfortunately, you’ve sent
it to the wrong printer and, by the time you realize it, somebody else has already scooped
it up."
This one is short, sorry!
The paper wasn’t there.
I rushed back to my computer to check which printer I had used.
Wait, what? I thought. I used the upstairs printer?!
By the time I made it upstairs, the paper was gone. Someone had taken it.
My heart started pounding. The document I had printed was a letter from my little sister, who was here illegally! She had sent me an email, talking about where she was, as well as her fake ID and everything. There would be no doubt whose sister it was. I was the only Latina in the entire company! I could get in trouble, too, since I had helped her get her fake ID!
Would she be deported back to the Honduras?
Who took the paper? I looked around. Everyone was typing away at their computers, and it didn’t look like anyone had gotten up to print anything.
How could I be so careless? How could I tell her? How could I have ruined everything?
Sighing, I turned to the stairs when I saw my boss standing at the bottom. I walked down, my heart filled with dread. He was holding a piece of paper.
“Is this yours?”
