Song Demons

Jessi plugged in her earbuds to silence.  She pushed the play button on her phone.  She set it doen as music filled her ears.

She completed her math problems effortlessly as she hummed the tune of her favorite song.  When she was finished, she closed her notebook and put it in her backpack.  She paused her music and put her phone and earbuds away.  She looked up to see Joi standing at her table, her hands planted on her hips.

"What're you doing here Jess?" she asked rudely.

"I'm doing my homework," Jessi replied.

"Pfft.  Only goody two-shoes actually do their homework on Friday," Joi said matter-of-factly.

"Well, someone's acting snarky today," Jessie commented, pulling out a volume of Skip-Beat.  "You were having an attitude with Ms. Wells today, too."

"So?  We all know her assignments suck," Joi countered, rolling her eyes and crossing her arms.

"That's arbitrary.  You know I'm fine with them," Jessi argued calmly.

"You're a walking dictionary," Joi snapped.  "I'm going to go find some manga."

"Just don't get caught reading it in Mr. B.'s class.  You know how much he hates manga."

"Whatever."

~**~

Joi pulled out a volume of Skip-Beat from the center shelf.  "Ugh.  Who even likes this trash?"  She shoved it back onto the shelf.

She scans the shelves for some more interesting manga.  She spots a volume of Death Note.

"Now this is more like it," she says to herself.

"Death Note?" someone asked behind her.  "Sounds interesting."

Joi whipped around.  "Oh, hi, Ms. L.!  What are you doing in the manga section?"

"I'm the art teacher!  I'm always looking for new inspiration for my comics."

"Oh, I almost forgot you owrite and publish comics!" Joi laughs.  She looks back at the seat where Jessi was sitting.  There's no one there.  "Hey, do you know what happened to Jessi?"

"I left her in my classroom.  Ya know, just to keep the bad kids out," Ms. L replies.

"That's weird.  I was talking to her about Ms. Wells's homework a minute ago.  She couldn'tve walked across the whole campus to your classroom and have time for you to leave here there in just a few minutes," Joi elaborated.  "Anyway, I'm going to check out this book."

~**~

Jessi turned the page on her volume of Skip-Beat.  She hummed "Ride"(Twenty-One Pilots) along to her earbuds.

The door slams open.  "Jessi!  What are you -- wait, how are you doing that?"

In that moment, Jessi have turned 20 pages and 400 words of dialogue.

Jessi pulls out her earbuds.  "What do you mean?"

Joi stomps her foot.  "Stop!" She yells.

"Doing what?" Jessi asks.

"Being so innocent!" Joi yells back.

"What's wrong with being innocent?" Jessi asks.

"Besides the fact that it makes you look like a wimp?" Joi scoffs.

"Then I'm a wimp," Jessi replies.  "And why were you staring at me like you just saw a ghost?"

"You were moving, like, super speed!  And you act like you don't know that!" Joi (somewhat angrily) explains.

"I've been here the last twenty minutes, imbecile.  Where've you been for the last era?"

"No, you haven't.  I've been at the library for five minutes, and it took me 5 minutes to get here.  You left right after I talked to you.  You can not have been here for twenty minutes,  You'd be, like a time traveller or something."

"Then I probably am, somnaphobe," Jessie growls.

"And I'm a shapeshifter, germaphobe."

"Nice vocabulary, insomniac."

"Thanks a bunch, dork."

"What's wrong with you deoxyribonucleic acid that makes you so rude?" Jessie fires back, ending the insult war.

Joi sits in the corner on a dest and starts to sing "Demons"(Imagine Dragons).  Her singing fades to the background as she turns into a cat, then a mouse, then a fox, and finally, a human.  Now it's Jessie staring at Joi instead of the other way around.

Part 2

Joi stops singing and looks at Jessi.  "What?" she asks.

"Y-you were shapeshifting!  You turned into a coat!  A-and a fox!  Did you know you just did that?"  Jessi exclaims.

"Nope," Joi says.  "Because I didn't."

"You did!  I swear!  Just like you said I was moving in superspeed!"

Then something grabs Jessi, and slams her against the wall 20 feet away.  Joi jumps up and runs over to her on the ground.  "Are you okay?' she cries, followed by "Oh my gosh!" as she sees a trickle of blood running down Jessi's face.

"Yeah . . .  I think I'm okay," Jessi says faintly.  "I'll --"

"No, you're not going to do anything.  I'll attack it," Joi says quickly, cutting Jessi off.  She digs her phone out of her pocket and plays "Demons" (Again, imagine Dragons).  Immediately, she turns into a bee.  She sees a creature, faceless, glowing, coming towards her.  she turns human again and sees nothing.  In a blink, a tiger this time.  She leaps at thi invisible monster, biting and clawing, until she feel sit stop fighting.

And then the door opens again.

"Oh my gosh!  Jessi, are you okay?" Ms. L. exclaims.

It's only then that Joi's form flickers back to human.  Ms. L.'s eyes widen.

"Are you . . . a shapeshirter?" Ms. L. asks.

"Yeah, sure, whatever.  I'm not sure myself," Joi says.

"Did you do that to Jessi?"

"No!  Heck, of course not!  Why do you think I was a tiger in the first place?  I was killing the thing that did that!"

"Then where is it?"

"I only saw it when I turned into a bee."

"You're saying it can only be seen in UV light," Ms. L. says.  "That's impossible!"

"But I saw it, I swear!"

"I'm going to take Jessi to the nurse's office," Ms. L. grabs Jessi's arm and drags her out the door, slamming it roughly.

Joi's eyes widen.  "She thinks I'm crazy.  She thinks I beat up Jessi.  What's wrong with me?"

She opens the door and walks home.

~**~

Jessi wasn't at school the following day.

And neither was Joi.

Jessi was in a hospital, wondering what it really was that slammed her into the wall.  What it had been that had broken her arm and cracked eight ribs.  Ms. L. said it was Joi.  But Jessi claimed something else entirely.  After all, she had been the one to experience it.  But the doctors said she had a concussion.

Joi was at home, wondering why.  Why it had to happen to her.  She contemplated her powers.  She contemplated whether to even go to school again.  No one would really care if whe skipped.  She was just that weird loner kid who went to the skate park and the roller rink instead of doing her homework.  So she did that all day.

But her thoughts always drifted back to Jessi.

And Jessi always drifted back to Joi.

~**~

It was one of those days when another monster attacked.  As always, Joi was at the skate park.  Alone.

She slid down a railing on her skateboard when it cracked beneath her feet.  She fell to the ground, looking around wildly.  She whistled her song as if she had done it a million times before.  She snapped into a bee again, and saw the monster.  It was different, this time a formless chunk of light.

She  turns into a leopard and leaps at the monster.

Though Joi can't tell, the monster has taken the form of a giant eagle.  It snatches her as she thrashes, baring her teeth and clawing at nothing.  It's talons hold her tighter, and she turns into a human again.

The claws.  Let.  Go.

Joi hurls down toward the ground, her whistling all but forgotten.  She hits the ground hard, and the world goes black.

~**~

The hospital doors burst open, sending a team in with a cart carrying a teenage girl with ahort dyed-blue hair.

It might've been a stroke of luck that Jessi managed to get Joi in the same room as her.  It might've been luck that Joi survived at all.

Again, the doctors were at a loss.  There was no real reason how or why Joi got hurt that badly.  Only Joi knew the answer.

Before I start, I want to say that school is finally out so I can post at least 2 times a week.  This first story should be done soon, though.  Probably onlly a few weeks, posting 2 times a week.

Without further ado, let's get on with the story!

~**~

The moment Joi woke up, she knew she had to tell Jessi.  She sat up quickly, but then gasped and fell back down again.  "Why," she gasped, "Does everything hurt?"

"Hey," a familiar voice said.  "Are you okay?"

"No," she replied.

"Still as snarky as ever.  Where've you been for the last era?" Jessi asked.

"Ha ha," Joi said, smiling.  "So do you know what happened to me?"

"Let me think . . .  I heard the doctors, so I think I know.  Ten broken ribs, one broken leg, Left arm broken in three places, right arm twisted but otherwise not hurt.  I'm surprised you didn't get yourself killed."

"Heh.  Me too," Joi says.  She sits up again, slowly this time.  "It was a monster.  It dropped me from heck knows how far."

"Well, I guess I believe you."

"Hey, walking dictionary, do you think there are more like us?"

"With powers?"

"Sure!" Joi says excitedly.  "Wanna help me look?"

~**~

"Where do we look first?" Joi asked.

It had been two weeks since their first conversation about others like them.

"Where would YOU find other people like you, laser brain?" Jessi asked flatly.

"That's the first real insult you've ever given me," Joi laughed.  "We goin' to the roller rink."

~**~

Jessi spotted the first person.  "There!" she cried as they entered the roller rink.  "Right there!" she pointed to a pair of quads rolling across the rink and a pair of earbuds floating above them.

"I can get them.  You find someone else," Joi says.

Joi paid for a pair of in-line skates while keeping an eye on the quads moving across the floor.  She zipped after them, quickly gaining ground.  She's more experienced than them.  She comes next to them and reaches out to pull out one of their earbuds.

"Hey!!" a female voice says.  "Don't do that!"

"Chill," Joi says quickly.  "Take your earbuds out.  I want to see what you look like."

"Why?" the voice asks.  "You already CAN see me."

"Check yourself." Joi replies coldly.  "I can't see you."

"Fine!  Why are you tomboy-types so nosy?" she pulls out her earbuds and fades into visibility.

"I don't appreciate being gender steriotyped," Joi mutters angrily.  She looks at the person next to her.

Blue eyes framed with mascara and eyeliner glare back.  "Why did you need me?"

"You're one of  us.  You have superpowers linked to listening to, singing, or whatever of your favorite song.  What is it?"  Joi explains.

"Mr. Cellophane.  From the musical 'Chicago'" the girl replies, brushing her white-blonde hair out of her eyes.  "Why do you need to know?"

"Ah, that's why your power is invisibility.  Your song is about someone who is -- figuratively -- invisible." Joi announces.

"What's your name again?" the blonde girl asks.

"Joi.  You?"

"Paeten."

"Come with me."

~**~

Jessi was having a problem.  A problem with red hair and green eyes.

"Why do you need me?" Justin asked angrily.  "I already told you, I DON'T HAVE SUPERPOWERS."

"Yes, you do.  Your voice is way too loud not to be amplified," Jessi argued.

"What's WRONG with you?  Can you not HEAR ME?" Justin's voice is so amplified, Jessi has to cover her ears.

"Can it, loudmouth!  What do you think you're doing?" another person cries.  It was a girl who looked almost identical to Justin.

"No, Justice, what are YOU doing?" Justin said meanly, crossing his arms.

"Saving you from making this girl go deaf."

Then Joi walks up dragging Paeten behind her.  "Jessi, this is Paeten.  She has invisibiility."

"Joi, these two people -- Justin and Justice, right? -- both have the same power.  Is that normal, would you think?"

"I don't know.  Probably depends on their favorite song and how close they are.  Have at thee."

"Umm, we're twins.  And we have the same favorite song." Justice says.

"It's Hear Me, by the Imagine Dragons.  What does that have to do with anything?" Justin says.

(June 3, 2017 - 8:10 pm)

"That makes sense for you to have voice amplification.  The song is about someone who wants people to hear them," Joi states.

"I don't think that there are any more people here," Jessi says.

Joi pulls out a notebook and writes a nmber on three pages.  She hands one to each person.  "Call me if something grabs you and is invisible.  And look for other people who have powers like any of us when they listen to a particular song."

~**~

The next day, Joi got a phone call.

She picked up on the second ring.  "Hello?  Who is this?"

The voice on the other end is panicked.  "It's Paeten!  It's one of those monsters you were talking about!  It's invisible and it tried to grab me but then I started singing and --"

"Shut.  It.  Tell me where you are," Joi orders.

"Twenty-two forty, Portsmouth avenue*.  You can tell it apart because it has the door ripped off.

"I'll be there.  Don't start a fight without me."

~**~

Paeten was right, Joi thought.  The door was ripped off its hinges.  She sprinted up the front steps inside the house, where Paeeten was drifting in and out of invisibility, throwing punches wherever she could.  "How do you tell where it is?"  she asked.

"I can see them when I'm invisible."

Joi sang the first word of her song and morphed into a bee, and saw the glowing dog-like creature.  She turns back into a human again.

"So that's what your power is," Paeten says.

"Are you good with fighting?" Joi asked.

"Yes.  I do wrestling."

Joi leaps at the monster, morphing into a lion.  She leaps on top of it and bites what she thinks is its throat.

She turns back into a human.  "Good job," she tells Paeten.

"I think there's someone on my wrestling team who has a power.  When she sings Warriors, her strength is magnified."

"Warriors, you say?"  Joi asks.  "Like the song or the book series?"

"We all have powers based on SONGS.  What do you think?" Paeten says wryly.

"Book?" Joi asks jokingly.

"Song," Paeten says, crossing her arms.

"Salty," Joi mutters under her breath.  Then her phone starts ringing.  It's Jessi's number.

Joi picks up, and says, "Follow me."

"Will you stop doing that?!" Paeten growls.

"Can't," Joi says, grabbing Paeten's hand.  "Jessi says she's at my house.  Do you have any means of transportation?"

"What, no!" Paeten cries, then mutters, "You seriously want me to ride THAT?" as shs looks at Joi's highlighter yellow motorcycle.

"Yes," Joi says.  She hands Paeten her helmet.  "Wear this.  You need it more than me."

"What!?  It'll totally mess my hair up!"

"Do you REALLY think we have time for this right now?"  Joi says, glaring at her and stepping on her motorcycle.  "Geez, no one would have thought a girl like you would do wrestling."

"I will murder you," Paeten says, climbing on behing Joi.  She screams as Joi accelerates.

"Quit screaming!  You're worse than Justin yesterday!" Joi yells to Paeten

~**~

Justin jerked the younger boy back roughly as he struggled to get out of the bonds that Justin had made out of a yo-yo.  Though he was younger, her was strong, and probably was delinquent, Justin noticed.  They had found him shoplifting from a Walmart that morning.  Teleporting in and out, earbuds in.

"We were staying in Paris," the boy sang.  Justin was surprised and didn't do anything, and Justice wasn't paying attention.  The boy teleports behind Justice, singing, "To get out of my bindings."

Justin reflexively started to hum "Hear Me" as Justice turned around, yelling, "What are YOU doing?"

"Um," he said.  "If you," He teleported to Justin.  "Go down, then," he sang as he teleported to Justice with Justin in tow.  "You go down together!" He slammed them together.  "They'll say I can do anything, they'll say that I was clever!" he continues, teleporting randomly until he winds up right in front of Joi's motorcycle.

*2240 Portsmouth Avenue isn't an important address or anything, it was just the first thing I thought of.
