The Legendary Bunnies

The Legendary Bunnies of the Ancient Castle

My Mom had a dream last night that she was in a castle for a very good reason, and she opened a door (she didn't know if she should have) and behind it was a room full of bunnies. The famous, legendary bunnies of the ancient castle. And I thought that was a great writing prompt. So, I challenge you to write a story based on this: She opened the door and found the legendary Bunnies of the Ancient Castle.

No stories? Well, I guess I'll just have to write one. Okay, let's see...

Jessa considered the door. She was allowed in most parts of the castle, but this door hadn't been mentioned. She wondered why. Her curiosity soon got the better of her, and she opened it. There was probably nothing there anyway.

The hinges creaked slightly, and she paused for a second in case anyone was coming. No one did, so she quickly pulled the door open wide and looked in.

Jessa gasped. The room was full of bunny rabbits. She had heard about them, but she never thought she would actually see them. The famous, the legendary Bunnies of the Ancient Castle. And she, eleven-year-old Jessa, had found them! Rumored to be the most adorable and cuddly bunnies on the planet, but very rare and only found in the Ancient Castle--here, Jessa reminded herself. Wait, here!

"They're here!" Jessa stepped on dizzy feet, dancing on air, into the room of Bunnies, scattering the adorable fluff balls at each step. A giddy laugh bubbled up inside her, and she released it, falling to her knees and opening her arms to the Bunnies. They hopped away from her at first, but then slowly returned, silky-furred wonders, dreams come true.

Jessa laughed and petted and cooed until her voice cracked and her arms hurt. That was when she began to notice; there seemed to be fewer Bunnies than before. Not as many adorable floofs hopped into her lap to be stroked. Not as many milled about beyond her arms' reach. And the number seemed to be decreasing. She carefully put down the Bunny she was holding and turned around.

She had forgotten to close the door.

I wrote a story, which I call; Castle-owning Bunnies: A Strange Short Story

Nettle ran through the valley, pursued by the Baroness of Pringles and her famous, dreadful golf playing sheep. Through the rain, she could see the faint outlines of a castle not too far away. She ran toward it, as fast as she could, sheep getting closer.

When she reached she pounded on the door, screaming, “Let me in, please, let me in!” The door opened.

She shut it, quick, and began exploring. The castle was drafty and old. In some places, the wall had disintegrated, and the rooms were exposed to the elements. In the banquet hall, there was a feast, but nobody to eat it. Don’t mind if I do, thought Nettle hungrily. She helped herself to rolls, cheese, asparagus*, roast beef, mashed potatoes, and jasmine crème brulee. But even when she was done, the castle remained silent.

She chose a pretty room to sleep in, with a bed heaped with pillows and down comforters and lovely flannel sheets.

In the morning as she was getting up, she heard a thump. Then another thump. “LET US OUT!” A booming voice said. Nettle ran to the other room across the hall and opened the door. “WE ARE THE MIGHTY BUNNIES OF THIS CASTLE! BOW BEFORE OUR AWESOMENESS!” The head bunny said.

“Uh, no thank you?” Nettle said.

“YOU DARE DEFY US? HOW WOULD YOU LIKE… TO BE COVERED IN CREAM CHEESE?!”

“Again, no thank you?” Nettle said, bowing. “Also, how did you get stuck in that room?”

“WE LACK THE OPPOSABLE THUMBS NECESSARY TO OPEN DOORS.” The head bunny told her. “NOW, BEGONE!”

“Must I go? I mean, what if you get stuck in a closet again or something?”

“FINE. YOU WILL STAY AND SPIN CHEESE FOR US!”

Nettle sighed. “I don’t know how to spin cheese. I’m pretty sure that’s not possible.”

“THEN… WE DISAPPEAR!”

The bunnies disappeared, leaving Nettle with her own castle.
