The Beginnings of

The Beginnings of a Story

Salem Spring perched on the top of the vine she had grown in the center of the library.  She scanned the shelves near the top, searching for something worthwhile for she and her sisters to read.  She found a book that had a green leaf, a red leaf, a snowflake, and a sun on it.  The title was "The Story of the Seasons."

"Guys, guys!" She called, walking down the staircase of leaves forming down the vine as she placed her feet.

"What?" Sunny Summer asked, glancing up from her magazine.

"Hm?" Autumn Falls murmured, looking at Salem from the corner, where she was making a tiny leaf tornado out of fallen leaves.

"What'd you say?" Leah Winter called, looking up from the book she was reading herself.  A crystaline icicle fell from the celing and shattered on the ground near Autumn, causing her to yelp and jump backward.  The leaf tornado careened into a bookshelf.

"This book is about the seasons!" Salem said.

"Lemme see!" Leah called, running over.  She leaned over the leather-bound book, and cried, "Woah!  You're right!  It is about the seasons!"

"I'm always right.  You're just not observant enough to notice," Salem said, walking to the couch next to Sunny.  "Sunny, the book's called 'The Story of the Seasons.'  You think it's good enough?"

"Mmm probably," Sunny said.  "Autumn, get over here!"  She calls.

"'Kay," Autumn replies, running over.

"Alright," Salem says.  "Chapter one: This is how it all started..."

There were four seasons.  Their names were Sunshine, Wind, Snowflake, and Willow.  They ruled over Earth, using their power when it was nescessary.  They agreed on a lot of things, being sisters and all, but they didn't agree on everything.

Snowflake wanted to rule over Wind's season, Autumn, as well as her own, Winter.  They were always quarrelling about who would have Winter, and who would have Autumn, and who would get both.  There was little Sunshine and Willow could do about it.

One day, Wind was walking through a forest, the leaves on the trees around her quickly changing from yellow to orange, and sometimes red.  She felt a spot of cold fall onto her face, and she put her goggles on her face.  She felt a strong gust of wind, and she brushed her auburn hair behind her ear.  Why would there be snow in her territory?  Only Snowflake could create snow.  Snowflake.

"Snow?  Snow, are you here?" She called.

"Wind?" Came back a voice.

"Snow, this is my territory.  Why are you using your power in it?"

"Go away."

And so Wind went away, not wishing to meet with her younger sister's explosive and dangerous temper.

The Center of a Story

"Woah!  That sounds a lot like us!" Leah Winter cried.  "Except our personalities are flipped.  Salem's a little more power crazy towards Sunny, and me and Autumn really just don't care instead of not being able to do anything!"

"Leah, please.  Watch your grammar.  It's 'Autumn and I,' not 'me and Autun,'" Salem said.  "And I'm not power-crazy, I'm just always right."

Autumn coughs.  "Sorry, I'm allergic to arrogance," she said.

Salem sighs.  "Let's continue..."

Chapter 2: The encounter of the opposites

Sunshine gazed out the window to look out at the lake across the field.  She always thought her territory was so beautiful, even if she was sharing with Willow.  She watched something ripple over the lake's surface.  She didn't even register it was raining until it reached her face, her pale yellow eyes blinking when they met with water.  Could Willow have done this?  It was possible for Willow to create rain, right?

She turned from the window, and stalked to the center of the room, her long dress billowing in the wind.  "Willow?" she called toward the doorway.

"I didn't do it!" Willow replied, walking into the room.  "I've only ever caused rain in droughts."

"Then who did?" Sunshine inquired.

Icicles start forming in the windows.  "That's not normal, is it?" was all Willow could say.

"Definitely not," a newer voice says.  A huge gust of wind knocks the wall inward, narrowly missing Sunshine.  Snowflake is standing in the rubble, a murdurous look on her face.

"What?  Snow, why are you here?  Why are you suddenly trying to control our territory!?" Sunshine cried.

"You've NEVER given me enough territory!" Snowflake yelled.

"That doesn't mean you can forcefully take ours!" Willow cried, growing vines to try to hold Snowflake back.  They freeze and turn black on contact.  "Wait, you shouldn't be able to do that, especially in our area!"

"Let's just say I've learned some new tricks.  Like how to imprison the Autumnal season in an infinite blizzard, maybe?"

"You did WHAT!?" Sunshine exclaimed.

"Yep, I did.  You want her, you'll have to go into her -- wait no, MY domain to get to her.  If you dare."

The Center of a Story, Phase 2

"It's getting spoopy!" Sunny said, pumping her fist.

"Watch!  The!  Book!" Salem cried, leaning away from Sunny.

"Get off me!!" Leah exclaimed, kicking her legs wildly.

"Sorry!" Salem said, getting off Leah.  "I don't want to ruin this book."

"Pshht.  Or lose your page."  Autumn teased.  "There aren't any page numbers!"

"Let's just get on with the story," Salem sighed.  "Chapter 3..."

Chapter 3: The Tide Will Turn

Wind shivered in the raging snow.  She hadn't tried using her power since she had walked into Snowflake unprepared.  After Snowflake told her to go away, she hoped that would be the end of it.  But Snowflake had somehow gotten stronger.  Strong enough to drive her into a cave and lock her in a blizzard.  In a cave.

She pulled her goggles off her face for a minute, and they immediately dried so fast they kind of froze, in a way.  She wiped them, and put her goggles back on again.  She didn't know how much longer she could survive in this cave.

She leaned on the wall, gazing at her breath in front of her.  She heard something, and immediately perked up a bit, the voices she thought she heard giving her a spark of hope.  Or was she just going crazy?

<(**)>

"A-are you sure this is the right way?" Sunshine asked breathlessly.  She glanced over at Willow, her hair blowing in the immense wind.

"Y-yeah," Willow said, brushing her dark blonde hair out of her face, after which it blew right back into her face again.  "It's just exhausting.  I can't believe Snow would do something like this."

Sunshine lifted her dress a little so she could walk better.  "I'm sure Wind can't be that far away.  With three seasons, Snowflake isn't going to stand a chance."

Just then, Wind came out of the blowing snow, looking weak and dazed.

"Wind!  Ohmygosh, what happened!" Willow screamed, running to Wind's aid.  "How long have you been here?!"

"I-i don't know," Wind murmured.  "Since Snow trapped me?"

"Where is she?" Sinshine asked.

"I don't know," Wind said again.  "But we can find her together."

The End of a Story... Is It?

"It's getting really interesting!" Sunny said.

"I wanna see the end!!!" Leah cried.  "Let me cheat, Salem!!"

"No!!" Salem yelled.  "We have to read until the end, not just cheat!" She sighs.  "Chapter four..."

Chapter Four: The Winter Season Gives Up

Sunshine was so angry at Snowflake.  She was sick of her younger sister trying to goad land out of her through pity.  And she was surprised that Snowflake, her innocent younger sister, would stoop this low.  She was so lost in thought and hate, she didn't realize the was heating up the cave until Wind tugged her sleeve.

"Sunshine.  You're melting everything," Willow said.  "This blizzard thing is barely even affecting us."

"What?" Sunshine asked, looking up.

"We can actually do stuff now!" Wind said.

"I guess my power is amplified when I'm angry," Sunshine reasoned.  She had known that before, once during  a heatwave when she was arguing with Willow, but she hadn't thought much of it.  "If I can keep my anger going, we can find Snowflake."

"Okay," Wind agreed, standing up and putting her goggles around her neck.  "If ya need a break, let us know!"

<(**)>

Snowflake was getting exhausted.  She didn't know why it was getting harder to keep up the blizzard, but it was definitely a problem.  She sat in the center of the ice-coated room, the only part of the cave where she had been holding Wind prisoner.  But what if someone else got in?  She thought.  If Sunshine somehow found the cave, (which she wouldn't), she could melt a doorway in the frozen shut entrance to the cave.  She decided to ignore it and keep the blizzard going.

After a few minutes, she started hearing a dripping sound.  Her ice couldn't be melting!  She turned quickly, just in case.  The doors were open, and the ice creating them looked melted, and there was a large puddle under them.  There was no sign of anyone, save for Wind standing in the doorway.

"Wind!?  What are you doing here?" Snowflake growled, standing up and walking toward her.  "I trapped you.  How are you still alive?"

"I had some help," Wind said confidently, walking up to Snowflake.  "Stand down.  Please.  If you are the only season, all life will die."

"Even you?" Snowflake asked.

"Even us," Wind nodded.

"Even if you were dead, I wouldn't want to be alone."

"That's why you should stop."

"But what if I want to do this again?  What if the world's too far gone now that all four of us are in this small area?!"

"Then we'll do the changing."

"but if we do the changing, the crystal will encase us."

"It will also give our powers to another set of four people."

"Shall we do the changing, then?" Snowflake asked tentatively.

"Only if you're okay with it," Wind replied.

<(**)>

The four sisters stood in a circle holding hands.  They all had agreed to do the changing, to rewind the world until the time where they began to exist, and be frozen in time until someone came to find them, encased in crystal.

Willow sighed, then looked around at Snowflake, Wind, and Sunshine.  They all looked ready.  She took a deep breath, and said in unison with them, "The seasons unite, Summer, Autumn, Winter, Spring, and turn back the clock to begin again, without the rule of the seasons.  We agree to save out power for another group of four to have always to control in ways we cannot."

By the time the changing was complete, Willow, Sunshine, Wind, and Snowflake were encased in crystals and time had been turned back to the time before steady seasons.

"Woah, Look, Chapter 5's just a map!" Leah said.

"Yeah, we're not blind," Salem grumbled.

"I wonder where it leads!" Leah cried.

"If it leads anywhere.  It's probably just a fictional book," Autumn reasoned.

"You guys just like to suck the fun out of everything," Sunny muttered, crossing her arms.  "Let me look at the locations on the map."
