Winter's Scavengers S

Winter's Scavengers Solo Write

Holly~ I look around carefully for any flashes of dragon scales before
climbing the ladder to go out of the small village where me and Harper
live. I pull out my bow, scanning for squirrels or other little animals.
My brother's head pops out a moment later, and I quickly pull him up.
"Stay close," I tell him. "I've seen a white spiked dragon lurking
around here recently, and I think maybe it has a home nearby." Harper
doesn't seem to hear me. He clambers quickly up a tree and starts
picking apples. Stupid, reckless Harper. Harper didn't
understand what dragons can do- he didn't see what happened when Forest
tried to steal treasure from one. I shake my head, trying to focus on
the task at hand. I don't hear or see any other small animals nearby,
and I don't want to leave Harper while I'm looking for food, so I take a
basket and start gathering nuts. A sound in the bracken makes me jump,
but when I look around, nothing's there. Still, something's worrying me.
Maybe I'm just paranoid, but I tell Harper, "Finish up and let's go in,
okay?" He hears the worry in my voice and jumps down. I pick a last few
berries and turn to head in- but then a net appears out of thin air and
entangles me in its folds. "Harper!" I yell. He shoots an arrow at the
pink and purple dragon, and the dragon yells in outrage. The white
dragon from eariler flies down from wherever they were hiding and picks
up the net that's trapping me. Harper can't even fight one dragon- they'll die if they have to fight two. "Go!'
I tell him. "Run!" Harper stands there for a second, then runs into the
village. The white dragon hooks his claws around the net and takes off,
carrying me away from my home. Like I said, I know what dragons can do
to small humans like us. And it's not good.

Winter~ "You did it!" I say happily.

"Yes, I know, I'm amazing," Kinkajou said. "What are you going to do now?"

"Get them settled in the sanctuary, then check for news of Moon." I answer.

"And Qibli," Kinkajou adds dryly.

"Well, yeah." I can't believe this project is actually going to work!
Well, hopefully it'll work, anyways. I dip my wings to land in the
large, walled off area, then put the scavenger down and settle on the
wall to see what they do. Kinkajou watches for a bit, then turns to head
into Santuary.

Alright, so this is a solo write I'm making about Winter's scavenger
project! If you haven't read the Wings of Fire series, well, you should,
but Winter is a dragon who's really interested in scavengers (i.e.
humans.) After a failed attempt at keeping one as a pet, he decides to
build a santuary for them to live in where no dragons will attack them
and he can watch them as much as he wants. This solo write has places
for 9 humans/scavengers including Holly, and 2 dragons(not mains) as I
will mostly be using real characters from the books for dragon
characters.

Here's the charrie sheet~

Human or Dragon:

Name:

Personality:

Appearance:

Tribe(hybrids are ok but not too many, humans just write which part of Pyrria you lived in):

Other:

And here's Holly's sheet:

Human or Dragon: Human

Name: Holly

Personality: Independent, fiercely protective of her little brother Harper, actually rather nervous and shy but she tries not to show it.

Appearance: Long dark curly hair, darkish skin, hazel eyes.

Tribe: Not a dragon, lives in a forest near the Diamond Spray River.

Other: Her dad is fine but her mom is currently in the Kingdom of Sand
because weird dragon reasons (look in The Hidden Kingdom where they're
at Blaze's hideout...).

This is my first solo write, and I hope people will fill out some characters soon!

Holly~

I quickly get up as soon as the white spiked dragon lets me go, ready to fight. But he's moving back quickly, leaving me with nothing to do but look around. I'm not free. I'm in a large enclosure walled off with rocks. At first it looks like just a section of mountain foothills, but then I see trees planted together to resemble forest and several berry plants that don't grow in the mountains but do grow near where I live. Dragons definetely built this place. But how? I thought they weren't smart enough to work together and build something like this. And, more importantly, why? Are they going to eat me? I don't think they would, after making such an elaborate place. Make me fight? I don't see an arena, at least not one like Leaf mentioned when he showed up in our village with some tall tale of gladiator dragons and a dragon who set everything it touched on fire. I didn't really believe him anyway. I can see dragons fighting, but a gladiator thing takes a lot of planning and organization, plus it's rather horrible.

The two dragons are still watching me. Maybe they want it to be like I'm a pet, or in a zoo or something. I want to be the worst pet ever, but I can't really stop from doing things. I need to get a shelter up before nightfall, and find a supply of fresh water. I instantly spot a stream, channeled through here and under the rocks that make a high boundary wall. I start gathering sticks to make a shelter, stubbornly ignoring the dragons. When they leave, I can try to escape. I'm putting the final touches on a small rough leanto, when I hear the wingbeats of the white spiked dragon flying away. I'm pretty sure the pink and yellow colorchanging dragon left, but I go around the perimeter of the enclosure to check anyways. They're gone. Time to start thinking of an escape plan.

I can hear noises of many dragons around the front wall, so I go towards the back. The rocks don't look too hard to climb, but getting down is the hard part. What I need is a rope. I start stripping bark off sticks, planning to weave a rope. That usually takes a few days though. It's quite tricky to make a rope from scratch. I've got to put off my escape until then, I suppose.

I spend the rest of the afternoon and evening working on my rope, pausing only to gather some berries for dinner. Then I spot the dragons flying back. The white spiked one had flown over before, but hadn't really looked in at me, just passing over on their way to somewhere else. Now he sits on the wall dejectedly, looking sad, if a dragon could look that way. I hesitantly walk over to them. They don't seem as scary now that they're not roaring and waving around nets. He looks down at me, suprised. Suddenly, he picks me up and puts me on the wall. It's not actually that hard to get down- the rock is uncut and bumpy. I could run around to the back and escape.

But I don't.

****
I'm posting now instead of waiting for more characters, because the idea is Winter will periodically catch more scavengers for the first part, until all the characters are here. So I can write more about Holly now. Moonfrost, Saphira should appear tomorrow unless I can't get the next part out on time.

Human or Dragon: Dragon
Name: Firefly (no relation to the possible future dragonet)
Personality: Curious, kinda naive, worrisome, likes to move
Appearance: She's a SeaWing/SkyWing hybrid. She is a pale orange color, like creamsicle, and all of her scales can light up, although dimly at most, she has awkwardly big wings, they look too big for her unnaturally small body, she likes to zip around, she has no gills but knows a tiny bit of aquatic and can see in the dark better than most SkyWings.
Tribe(hybrids are ok but not too many, humans just write which part of Pyrria you lived in): See above. She lives right where the continent begins to thin into the "tail" of the dragon.
Other: She had a pet scavenger once, but someone ate it. She usually feels like scavengers are the only ones who understand her.
Human or Dragon: Dragon
Name: Willow
Personality: Loves to draw and explore, went to the rainforest one and loved it (So much to draw! So much color! Lots of mud!), (so she might fall in love w/ a rainforst dragon), kind of interested in Winter's scavenger project.
Appearance: Pale brown with golden underscales, startling green eyes, a small big with a sketchbook and drawing materials, a necklace with emeralds and saphires (it's her only treasure)
Tribe(hybrids are ok but not too many, humans just write which part of Pyrria you lived in): MudWing, maybe goes to Jade Mountain Academy??
Other: n/a
Human or Dragon: Human
Name:Thea
Personality: Practical, bad at hiding (always has her feet sticking out, or sneezes or something), used to live in a scavenger den before Winter captured her
Appearance: Tall, black hair, blue-gray eyes
Tribe(hybrids are ok but not too many, humans just write which part of Pyrria you lived in): Pick a scavenger den
Other: might make an inderesting subject, as she is kind of an oddball
My CAPTCHA says okxy. No, I think they are MORE than okay, thank you very much!

Willow-

I race Kinkajou through Sanctuary, laughing. Since joining the Jade Winglet to replace Umber, we've been hanging out a lot. I reach the lake a couple wingbeats ahead of Kinkajou, leaping forward and landing with a splash. Kinkajou flies up and then drops down, getting water droplets everywhere.

"Agh, the water's so cold!" she yelps.

I laugh and splash her."Just keep swimming. Anyway, the IceWings like it."

Right on cue, Winter arrives, diving perfectly into the lake. "Hey Kinkajou, hey Willow." I don't know Winter that well, but he seems pretty nice for an IceWing, and that scavenger project of his sounds cool.

"What did you hear about Moon and Qibli?" Kinkajou asks.

"Nothing," Winter tells her. "Two days ago, when they disappeared, was the last time anyone saw them. Thorn says Moon had come to talk to Qibli."

"Maybe Qibli and Moon are on a honeymoon, or something," I offer, then get smacked in the face by Kinkajou's wing. "Not the right thing to say," Kinkajou stagewhispers. "Because Winter totally has a crush on Moon and you just dashed his dreams."

Winter blushes, and Kinkajou giggles. "AnyWAY," Winter says pointedly, "after that I went to look for more scavengers, but I couldn't find any."

"I know a scavenger den nearby," I say. "I can take you there if you want."

Winter's eyes light up. "That'd be great, thanks. Where is it?"

"I'll show you!" I hop out of the pool, shaking the cold water off my scales. "C'mon!"

Winter follows me, and Kinkajou gets out of the water too but goes to head back to Sanctuary.
"I'm going to do suntime- wake me up when you get back," she tells us.

"I never understood that RainWing thing," Winter mutters. "So where's this den?"

"Follow me!" I lead him through the valleys until we come to the spot I see the den. Then Winter freezes in place, staring at the place.

"What's wrong?" I ask.

"This place... bad memories," Winter says quietly. "My brother..."

"We don't have to go here if you don't want to," I tell him.

"No... it's okay."

I point to a small camoflagued village. Semi-dugout of the valley and made from natural things, it's almost impossible to spot if you don't know it's there. No one's out right now, and it's tricky to reach in because of several walls and barricades. But then a young scavenger pokes her head out and looks around. When she sees us, she yelps and runs back in, but then I see her looking at us from a higher platform. Winter throws his net and catches her. She yells and struggles, but not nearly as much as the other little scavenger did. Winter pulls the net back and carries the blue-eyed scavenger back to the enclousure. She's stopped struggling, and is watching us with wide, curious eyes. Winter carefully lets her go, and the scavenger he caught yesterday runs to them. They start yibbling at each other.

Winter smiles as he watches the first scavenger start to lead around the blue-eyed one. "Now they're settled," he says happily. This would be perfect... but where are Moon and Qibli?

***

Wow, this was a long one. Willow and Saphira are both in the story now, and you'll see more characters soon! The next post should be tomorrow. I'm trying to alternate between human and dragkon perspectives, so I think I'll do it from Saphira's point of view.

Winter~ I sit on the wall of the scavenger sanctuary, thinking. Since Moon and Qibli vanished, that's been the only thing I can think about. I have no idea where Qibli is, and Moon... even though she stole Qibli away- I mean, what? They're both my friends, and having no idea where they are really, REALLY is not good. It's been two and a half days now, and no sign of them. Turtle says that he might enchant something to find them, but he hasn't done it yet.

I look down at the enclosure where the two scavengers are making something with their clever little paws. At least they're getting along well enough.

******

Saphira~

Holly and I are not getting along. I watch her work on her shelter, expanding it and chinking it with mud against the cold. I need to build a shelter for myself, but I've never actually built one before. So I'm watching Holly to see what she does.

When the IceWing let me down, she came over and helped me up. "I'm Hollyhock Gatherer," she said nervously. "But you can call me Holly."

"I'm Saphira," I told her.

"I'm pretty sure the white spiked dragon caught us to be pets, or something." she said. "I'm finding a way out, and it's not so bad here."

"They're called IceWings," I answer, "and yeah, I figured that out."

She stared at me for a second, then walked off. "It's getting late," she called. "Make yourself a shelter, quick."

"Wait!" I yelled after her. "How do you make a shelter?" But she was already gone.

Now as I'm watching her enlarge her shelter, she turns around. "Here, if you're not going to make a shelter or anything, then weave this rope for me. Or you could just keep doing nothing."

I almost yell at her that if she wasn't going to help me make a shelter, I definetly wouldn't braid her rope. But instead, I just take it and start braiding.

When the sun is dipping below the horizon, Holly calls me over. She's built herself a small mud-and-sticks comfortable shelter, and made me a lean-to besides it. "You made me a shelter?" I ask her.

"Well, yeah," she says uncertaintly. "And, um, I'm sorry for yelling at you and stuff. These dragons might be friendly, but we need to stick together. You just know so much more about dragons than me- how do you know all that?"

I shrug, smiling now that she's being more friendly. "I study them, I guess."

"What do you know?" she asked curiously.

"Well, I know this has happened before. When three people tried to steal the hoard of a dragon, a queen actually-"

"They have queens?"

"Yeah, there's a whole complex monarchy. Anyway, two, uh, anyways, well the last one some dragon kept as a pet. Her name is Rose.."

Suddenly, Holly reaches out and grabs my hands, staring at me.

"What?" I say uncomfortably.

"Rose is alive?"

*****

Yup, I'm planning to do a dramatic meeting next or the one after next post between Holly and Saphira, and Rose/Flower (Smolder's pet scavenger.) Should be fun! Also, Tui? WE NEED THE NEXT BOOK ALRADY SO WE CAN TELL WHAT HAPPENED TO MOON AND QIBLI! THIS IS WORSE THAN WAITING FOR BOOK 9! BUT THAT SUCKED TOO! SO STOP ENDING YOUR BOOKS ON FLIPPING CLIFFHANGERS FOR THREE MOONS!!!!

Okay, rant over. I was going to have Firefly and Thea show up, but in the seqience where Winter's thinking, I really wanted to end it on "At least the scavengers are getting along well enough." and that would be hard to do if Firefly randomly showed up. So, next post they'll appear!

Nah, I’m involving dragons more than I thought. I wrote the thread before I really started thinking about plot and other things like that. You can do Starseeker, and I would like it if you would do a human as well- I need more humans. I especially need; human characters, male characters, and dragon characters to replace the dragonets who don’t go to Jade Academy anymore.

So Starseeker would be fine.

(March 18, 2018 - 12:45 pm)

Really? Great! I'll make a human female charrie, a human male charrie, and Starseeker, then. You don't have to use them all; rather, they can be a stepping-off point for your own characters if you want.

~~~
Human or Dragon: Dragon
Name: Starseeker
Personality: hmm, this is always being revamped. Smart, certainly. Rather like Moon, actually? Kind of shy sometimes but a leader nonetheless. Elegant and sophisticated.
Appearance: deep black scales; dark purple stomach scales, horns, and back spines; dark blue, silver, and dark green highlights when exposed to light (such as the rainforest). Vibrant purple eyes. Silver teardrop scales by her eyes (see 'other').
Tribe (hybrids are ok but not too many, humans just write which part of Pyrria you lived in): NightWing; lived away from the tribe with her parents for a while. Her parents were dragons who ran away because they were afraid of the volcano.
Other: In her original backstory, she was a prophecy dragonet with the ability to see the future and read minds. She was born on the false brightest night, which was both a blessing and a curse. It was a blessing beacuse it strengthened her powers and made her able to both read minds and see the future. It was a curse because since the night wasn't technically a true brightest night, and so her powers are warped. She can see only the bad futures and read minds when they're thinking bad thoughts.
Human charries coming soon!
Hey, @Blue Moon, Starseeker doesn't have to have her powers. I realize that it makes her a little OP in the circumstances, and her powers were always meant for a different plotline. So yeah. You are welcome to remove her powers if you want.
AHHHH! I love it! You're doing great! I have an idea you might like to use, if you don't I don't mind.  Later you could do a dramatic scene where Saphira gets really sick and might possibly die. You don't have to do that, but if I was writting the story I would.
Holly says "Pipa"
That's the first time she's ever said somthing that even sounds like a real word!
I’m sorry I haven’t been posting any new parts, I’ve been really busy. I’m just typing this on a iPad as I can’t use our family computer right now, so it’ll be shorter as well. Spring break is coming up in a couple of days and I should have more time then. With that, here’s a new part.
****
Firefly~
I stood awkwardly besides Winter, watching him gently put the scavenger down. I had seen the sanctuary and had come to Winter to tell him of a scavenger den near where I live, on the very edge of the Mud Kingdom. It was large enough to be on maps of Pyrria, and well fortified, but I’d found this little black-haired scavenger outside the gates, trying to fix their little waterwheel contraption.
I thought about keeping them, but I didn’t think that would work.
So when I was going through Sanctuary to finally see the Sky Kingdom where my father came from, I decided to bring them and put them in the sanctuary.
Winter straightens up with a smile, then looks at me like he didn’t notice me before. His eyes fly to my scales, and I brace myself to answer the inevitable questions. But he just smiles slightly and looks out over to the horizon, towards the Sand Kingdom. That’s where Moon and Qibli disappeared, I realize. Then he looks startled, like he noticed something. I peer over his shoulder, trying to see around him. A dragon with black diamonds on their scales is on the horizon, flying towards us. At first I tense. Blister? But she’s dead. My mother told me how hard the SeaWing’s ally made it for her to meet my father, and how they would kill me if they knew I existed. That was before the second brightest night, with the comet. That’s when Blister died, and the SeaWings could finally know about me.
Still, I tense and get ready to fly. But then I see a scavenger on the dragon’s shoulder, and realize it’s Smolder and Flower- they must be coming to help Winter with his project. I’d heard about his resemblance to Blister. So I should be relaxed, but I can’t shake a nervous feeling that something bad is going to happen.
