The Figments: An RP

When man had reached outward with all his might, searching for some unattainable glory, he transformed the world into something inglorious. Now riddled with disease, filth, and overcrowding, man had only one choice left: to reach inward...

It is the near future and the overpopulated planet is run by a corporation known as Rose Corp. The elite upper class, known as Landowners, buy real estate from Rose Corp... but not the kind you're thinking of. The Landowners commission entire virtual worlds, and the Creators at Rose Corp build them. For a very steep price.

In turn, the Landowners found their own ways to make money. When VR implants finally became legally mandated for every citizen, the Landowners saw it as an opportunity to welcome the public into their worlds, and into their admission fees. They had everything from high-tech neon cities to sprawling medieval kingdoms to treacherous pirate-infested seas. If you could think of it, you could probably go there. The best part was, civilians didn't even have to leave their homes to visit.

These were prime conditions for business, and the massive influx of customers helped bring the Landowner's visions to life. And yet, these worlds still felt a bit empty... that's when the Figments were created. Artificial intelligences designed to be background characters, to add a sense of realism. They were no more than a few lines of code and several billion pixels, but they seemed genuine. With this development, the worlds became all the more popular, the Landowners became all the more rich, and Rose Corp continued to become all the more powerful...

***

So, so sum it all up, this is a Sci-Fi RP about a series of virtual worlds that can be accessed by the public via a virtual reality implant and some hefty admission fees. Here are the roles you guys can have:

Landowner - A member of the rich upper class who has commissioned Rose Corp to create a virtual world for them. The Landowners decide the theme, but everything else is left up to the Creators to design. Each Landowner is the administrator of their own world, and has full jurisdiction to come up with laws for it. Some fall into a role, becoming a monarch, president, or supreme overlord, while others pay someone else to do the leading for them. The richest Landowners have more than one world.

Creator - A scientist who works at Rose Corp HQ and is paid by the Landowners to create worlds for them. Nothing much to explain here.

Civilian - An ordinary member of society, who usually does not live in the most pleasant conditions. If they are well enough off, they can afford to access the hub world from their VR implants, where they can then travel to any world for varying prices. While in each world, they are expected to play along with the laws set in place by its leader. Some only visit occasionally, while others spend their entire lives there, only taking short breaks to eat (virtual food is tasty, but is sadly lacking in nutrients).

Figment -  An artificial intelligence created for one specific world to fill one specific role. The Figments have consciousness but are not aware that they are unreal nor that they are living in a simulated world. They can die, but this rarely happens due to the legal system.

Kronos Corps - An undercover police force and a militant branch of Rose Corp that patrols the worlds and searches for miscreants. If they discover a transgression, such as illegal entry of a world without paying, or breaking the law of the land, they will trace the perpetrator's real-life location and send a squad there to detain them.

There is, however, no limit to how many people can join.

No OP people, Mary Sues, etc. etc.

I will post my character after the first person posts.

I quietly strode into Rosecorp. Being careful to listen to my surroundings, I stride to the garden, one of the only place where I can play my panflute. I find a nice cool bench under, what seems to be a tree. I sit and start to play. After a few songs, I hear footsteps and stop playing. I hear a voice. " Why did you stop?"

I turn to the voice and ask, "I am sorry, who are you?" I raise my eyes to where their face would be.

~~

Jsyk she can play the panflute, one can learn. I know how to play.  Also, baby post, life. I suck at life. XD tests.

@Darkking keep in mind that I changed Ray's name in a previous comment.

Also, I seem to have negelcted to give the Landowners a place to live. Let's just say they have their own fancy condos adjacent to the Rose Corp apartments.

Ross~

Apartment complex 13, floor 75, penthouse suite.

I step into my home completely drained, dropping my small briefcase onto the floor and running my hands through my hair with a groan of exhaustion. Pretentious coworkers who think they know everything, that's what my day has been.

 My home's automated system detects my sudden presence. The lights flicker on, revealing the luxurious suite, complete with a living area and a giant TV I almost never use, a kitchenette and a bar, and a balcony overlooking the city. A door off to the side leads to my spacious bedroom. In a cage in the corner sits my sole roomate, my pet cockatiel Isaac, chirping quietly. This is one of the smaller suites in the city, but it's still enough for maybe three or four more people to move in. Some might call it selfish for one person to have so much space, but I earned it, fair and square.

Welcome home, Mr. Shepherd. Would you like me to prepare a drink for you?

"Not tonight," I reply. I meander over to the balcony, slide open the door, and step outside for a moment. The air is warm, warmer than usual for this time of year. Faint lights sparkle in a few storefronts, and cars pass silently by beneath me. It's moments like this when I can't help but think of my family on the mainland, probably still working in a factory. My parents, four brothers, two sisters, my two aunts and three uncles, and my grandmother. Funny enough, my grandmother was always the most understanding of my decision to leave. You have to reach your dreams off the top shelf, she always said, because heaven knows no one else is gonna reach them down for you. She was probably gone now, she hadn't been in the best state when I'd left. Factory life had taken its toll on everyone, myself included. But did that give me the right to ignore my past? I was still trying to figure that out to this day. Even if I did want to contact them, there was no way to anymore. The only way is to go down to the harbor, hop on a ship, sail to the mainland, and somehow find them in a sea of smoke and haze and sparks and loud noises. Even then, would they be furious with me? Would they feel betrayed? Would they even acknowledge my existence?

For the time being, I can't distract myself with such thoughts. The time is now, and now there are more important things to worry about. Tomorrow we will be releasing the beta version of the Plaza of Heroes to the public. It'll be a big day for everyone, and there are probably still some stragglers at the office putting finishing touches on it to make sure the details are just right. But I'm not worried. I've looked over the new plaza hundreds, maybe thousands of times, and never found a single issue with it.

Yes, there's too much worrying in the world as it is. For now, I just want to kick back my feet and go somewhere nice. I've earned it, fair and square.

I cimb onto my bed, get into a comfortable position, and close my eyes. I reach behind my right ear to switch on my implant, and reality disintegrates.

I load into my avatar customization screen, an empty white room containing a large mirror with countless options laid out upon its surface. I select my lab coat, as usual, and enter the plaza. It takes a little longer to load than usual, especially for a weeknight. I figure it's just because this is the last day of the old plaza and people want to say their goodbyes before it's replaced.

I finally step into the old plaza, a simple tiled square with a fountain in the center. A starless black sky hangs above, paralleling the one in the real world. However, I soon realize something isn't right.

A large, loud crowd of avatars is clustered in one area, around the plaza's northwest corner, seemingly around a single door. Confused, I jog over to see what's up. Some in the crowd see me approach, and, recognizing my authority from the lab coat, quickly make way to let me through. Their faces are full of anxiety, ramping up my own anticipation of what could possibly be happening.

Finally, I manage to squeeze myself to the front of the mob, which stops about a meter or two away from a door. Or at least... what used to be a door.

The label is still there, spelling out "Marauder's Cove" in gold stylized letters. I know Marauder's Cove well, it's actually one of my favorites. But the wooden door crested with a rusty skull and crossbones, just... isn't. It simply isn't there. In its place, a dark, black void. I cautiously reach an arm out towards it. As soon as I touch it, my avatar starts glitching out, my arm convulsing in a pixelated spasm. I recoil in horror.

I angrily turn around to face the crowd. "Who is behind this?"

"W-we don't know sir," someone speaks up. "The door just... disappeared."

"Disappeared? What's that supposed to mean?"

"Honestly, it was here and then it wasn't."

"What about the people who were inside, what happened to them?"

"They probably just woke up."

"And the Figments? Do you suppose they 'woke up'?"

The first person who had spoken looks down uncomfortably. After a few seconds, another avatar speaks up.

"Maybe someone deleted it by accident?"

"We don't do that, we don't delete worlds! We never have! It's like killing for us!"

Without waiting for any more half-baked explanations from the crowd, I reach behind my ear and bring myself back into the real world. Something really bad is going on here.

Harlow-

"Ma'am, you must understand that we have stated multiple times we can't do any-"

"Perhaps you should understand that under my circumstances, not being able to leave is posing a multitude of problems for my world and business," I keep my voice as steady as possible, stiffening at the shifting holographic image of some underling.

How many times I have had this conversation, I've lost count. I've tried every single month, to at least get a meeting with a higher up Rose Corp Executive, but I'm always stuck with the same ordinary figment, maybe even an actual real person if I get lucky.

"If you want to change the ruling further, you will have to schedule an-" I close the call with the swipe of my fingers, and knead my brows with a sigh.

I know it's not the poor figment's fault, but it's hard to not get frustrated with their same exact response to any question. Taking a seat, I nurse my drink and stare out the window, swishing the water rhythmically.

Flicking my finger, I pull up my menu screen and scroll through the announcements and news. Mainly just small updates, like a new world being added or a bug fix on one of the figments, but something catches my eye.

Usually, the news section is filled with Rose Corp Propaganda, but once in a while an opinion piece makes its way through that doesn't exactly fit the corporation's views. This is one of those rare cases where there are a lot, and I mean a lot, of opinion pieces.

'Marauder's Cove Gone, Rose Corp Silent'

'World Disappears! Bug or Something Else?'

'Rose Corp is going Downhill! Here's why.'

'Rose Corp's stock prices go down after World Disappearing Scare'

'World is Dead, But What About the Figments?'

I open up the first one, and quickly skim through it, a feeling of dread making its way through my throat.

This doesn't happen. Rose Corp, for all its faults, doesn't make mistakes like this. Worlds just don't disappear! Even ones that can't be sustained are usually taken up by someone else to continue to allow its use. And what of the figments? Dear god, the figments. My hands shaking, I quickly call up Hugo.

Hugo quickly appears in front of me. "Yes Missus? What is it?" He wraps his hands around one another and looks hopeful.

"I want you to do a scan of the entire world. Look for intruders or anything out of the ordinary." I get up, still swiping through my contacts. "I have to do something."

Kath~

The next few days pass in a blur. I visit the library and meet a member of Rose Corps. I visit the virtual world a few times. The new plaza is coming out, so I take one last look around the old one. I refrsh my email as much as possible. Finally, it arrives.

Thank you for applying for a position at Rose Corp. We have selected you for testing. As soon as possible, you are to report to Rose Corp Apartment Complex 15. A porter will be waiting for you at the entrance and will assign you a room key and a scale. Your new room will be your temporary residence for the duration of the test. Your scale will contain a blank world, as well as a rudimentary version of Rose Corp's official creation software and a Figment guide who will give you a crash course on how to use it. You should be able to pick it up quickly.

The test: In your world, create 1 Figment and 1 obstacle that must be overcome. The obstacle must be impossible to overcome without first interacting with the Figment. You must complete the assignment within a week, whereupon your scale will be collected and your world evaluated. We will then make our final decision about you future at this company.

Best of luck.

I've been accepted. Accepted. I don't know weather to laugh or cry. I stare at the shiny white tower. It said to go to Rose Corps as soon as possible, so I pack a small bag, slide my headphones down so they rest around my neck like a necklace, and head out.

***

I knock cautiously at the door to the tower. I wait a minute. Then another. I almost knock again, but just as I lift my hand, a woman opens the door. I turn it into an awkward wave. She has shoulder legnth reddish hair spilling out from under a hoodie. She looks stressed and worried.

"Who are you?" she asks.

"I'm here for the testing. I'm a, uh, applicant. My name is Kathleen Zishal. Could you point me to complex 15?" I say, trying not to sound like I've rehersed this the whole way here (I have).

"Oh. I'm Benedict Montague," she says as she reaches out to shake my hand, "But call me Ben."

As she withdraws from the doorway, I catch a glimpse of a few frenzied workers running around. There's this sort of nervous vibe that wasn't here the last time I was here.

"I'm a Creator. I think the complex you were looking for was that way." She points to my left. "Walk down that hallway. Go straight, then right, go up three flights, then turn right again. Just follow the numbers until you get to 15. If you get lost, just ask someone. Tell them you're testing."

"Thank you, er, Ben," I say, then, curious, I blurt out, "What's going on?" I gesture to the frenzied employees.

She sighs. "You haven't heard? One of the worlds somehow got deleted. I don't have time to fill you in, just turn on your implant and you'll see."

I understand. I start walking towards my dream. I'm worried about the deleted world, but my exitement for the test eclpises it as I walk forward, mind swirling with ideas

Ben~

When I hear the news, the first thing that runs through my mind is "Oh, shoot." The second thing that runs through my mind is "How is that even possible?" The third thought overwhelmes the second one, and it uses much stronger language than the first one.

And then I remember something- Maurader's Cove was the last world my mother worked on. It was a special connection to her, to see her final creation. And now it's gone. I'm still shocked, mourning the loss when there's a knock on the door. I open it, and standing there is a young woman, maybe two or three years younger than me, with long purple hair and glasses.

"Who are you?" I ask.

"I'm here for the testing. I'm a, uh, applicant. My name is Kathleen Zishal. Could you point me to complex 15?" Kathleen says, looking kind of nervous. It would be nice to have a new face around- there haven't been any new employees for almost a year.

"Oh," I say. "I'm Benedict Montague. But call me Ben. I'm a Creator. I think the complex you were looking for was that way." I point to the left. "Walk down that hallway. Go straight, then right, go up three flights, then turn right again. Just follow the numbers until you get to 15. If you get lost, just ask someone. Tell them you're testing." She looks kind of startled by all the people running around- I am too. We are Rose Corp. We don't make mistakes. We don't get rid of worlds, which are expensive and take time and are our pride.

"Thank you, er, Ben. What's going on?" Kathleen asks.

"You haven't heard? One of the worlds somehow got deleted. I don't have time to fill you in, just turn on your implant and you'll see." I tell her. She looks worried for a moment, but a smile begins to spread across her face. I don't blame her- it's her special day. I hope she passes.

And then I turn my attention to the crisis Rose Corp, the world's most powerful company, is in.

Perhaps that's what makes this so disastrous- we affect the world.

And that doesn't come without a price.

Ross~

It's only been a few hours, but the news has spread like wildfire. There's a pit in my stomach as I approach the tower and the swarm of paparazzi surrounding it. They pelt me with questions, as I assume they have been doing with every employee who happens to walk by. There's even a few of what I can assume are protestors, holding up signs that I don't bother looking at. Today was supposed to be a big day. A good day. This... wasn't supposed to happen.

The hysteria doesn't end when I enter the headquarters. Employees are running back and forth, delivering what could only be gossip and speculation. Even a few Kronos officers in their black uniforms are in the hectic mix.

Almost as soon as I step inside the lobby, one of my coworkers approaches me. Ben Montague. "They've been looking for you," she says. "Overslept?"

"Didn't sleep at all." I mumble. "What do you want?"

"The word on the street is that Hathaway showed up early this morning and she's requested to see a few high-ranking employees. Yourself included."

My misery is immediately replaced by apprehension. The CEO of Rose Corp, Scarlet Hathaway, is hardly ever in the actual headquarters, most of the time performing her operations from her rural mansion on the mainland. Answering only to Rose Corp's mysterious Chairman, she is the second most powerful person at the company, and maybe even the world.

So to say her presence is surpising is an understatement.

"What room?" I ask urgently, feeling my heart rate spike.

"142b, on floor 33," she replies. "I'd laugh at the look on your face, but I'm supposed to be there too."

"Then what in the name of god are we standing around here for?" without waiting for an answer, I make a beeline for the nearest elevator. Ben jogs to catch up with me and, for better or for worse, barely makes it in before the doors close.

"No need to get mad."

"Maybe I wouldn't have to if you took this job seriously for once."

For the entirety of the elevator ride, every muscle in my body is constricted. I've always wanted to meet Scarlet, but these are less than the conditions I had been expecting. When we reach floor 33, I waste no time in finding the correct door and opening it.

Scarlet is seated at a small table, in the same black skirt and jacket she's usually seen in. Her slightly graying auburn hair falls just below her shoulders, and her amber eyes are somewhere on the border between wise and threatening. Her eyes turn to me, then to a clipboard on the table, then back to me.

"Ross Shepherd and Benedict Montague?"

I nod breathlessly, some part of me slightly offended that she didn't recognize me. She motions us to step in, and when we do, I see someone else seated at the table. Someone whose infamy nearly matches Scarlet's power. It's Leo Hawkes, one of the richest Landowners in the world, known for having a whopping 10 worlds under his belt.

As of last night's events, he now has 9.

In a semi-circle of chairs facing the table, several of my other coworkers are silently seated, including Charlie White, who looks strangely uncomfortable in the presence of Mr. Hawkes. Ben and I take the two remaining seats on the end, and I start talking almost immediately after sitting down.

"Look, if this is about the plaza update, I can assure you that we still have all the resources to release it by the end of toda..."

"I'm afraid the new plaza will have to be postponed," Scarlet interrupts me in a calm yet commanding voice.

"What?" I reply in dismay. "But we've been working on it for ages! This release date has been set in stone for months!"

"And I'm sure with a little more time it will be even better than before. But right now, there are more important things at hand."

Leo suddenly slams his palms down on the table. "Like what you idiots did to my world!"

"Mr. Hawkes is... suing." Scarlet's lips purse into a thin line at that last word. I can hardly believe it myself. Even the Landowners lack the authority to sue the most powerful company in the world. Or at the very least, they lack the nerve.

But who would he sue? There was still no evidence as to what exactly happened last night. There was no known bug in the system, or even any know way to delete worlds. So who was to blame?

I make my thoughts vocal about this, asking who exactly Mr. Hawkes wanted money from.

"That's what we're trying to figure out right now," Scarlet answers. "All of you are fairly high-ranking, and thus have access to certain features that most employees do not. Features that can be... easily exploited."

"Are you saying we're suspects?" Ben asks.

"I'm not going to sugarcoat it," she replies. "Yes, you're suspects. But I highly doubt anybody in this room is responsible for last night's events."

I suddenly notice that Leo is staring. Directly at me. Soon, everyone else picks up on this and direct their gaze towards me as well. Leo raises a finger towards me, his eyes narrowing.

"I know you. You were there right when it happened, that's what I've heard."

"What are you talking about?"

Leo suddenly stands, taking a few paces away from the table. "I don't know who you are, but if you think you can mess with Leo Hawkes you're dead wrong."

I stand up as well, my blood starting to boil. "Are you accusing..."

"Everyone, sit down!" Scarlet interupts again. "No one is accusing anybody of anything until we figure out exactly what's going on here!"

Leo seems to completely ignore this request, instead walking closer towards me until he is just a foot or two away.

"You'd better pay up if you know what's good for you, boy."

He then storms out of the room, slamming the door and leaving everyone in a stunned silence.

I can't believe it.

Am I being framed?

Charlie-

I sit in the large swivvly chairs, growing more and more uncomfortable by the minuet. The whole meeting room is silent except for the casual whisper or a soft cough. Hawkes is sitting two chairs away from me, and I can only imagine why he's here. His world was completely wiped out of excistance, theres a room full of high ranking employees, and Scarlet Hathaway, practicly the second most powerful human in the world, are all at his grasp. He need only to say one word, and I could be fired from my job. And go to prison. He was going to blame me for the dissapearing world, and I was going to be found out for the crimes I’ve committed. I keep my sweaty hands in my lap, trying to look as calm as possible. I don’t think it’s working.

Suddenly the door swings open and in steps Ross Shepherd and Ben Montague. They quickly sit down, Ross speaking as he does so.

“Look, if this is about the plaza update, I can assure you we still have all the resources to realest it by toda...”

Scarlet merely brushes him off, then Leo suddenly slams his hands down on the large meeting table. This was it. I’m in for it.

”Like what you idiots did to my world!” He yells. Scarlet quietly stated, “Mr Hawkes is... suing.”

There was no doubt about it! Hawkes would do anything to have more money, which in this day and age, is power. But was he suing Rose Corp? How could he prove that anyone deleted his world purposely? Ross voices this, and I quietly sit back in my chair, listening to what Scarlet says. Were all suspects apparently. No doubt about that. Anyone of us could have wiped out the Cove. I glance at Hawkes, but he doesn’t even look in my direction. He’s staring right at... Ross?  “I know you,” he says, “You were there right when it happened, that’s what I’ve heard.”

What are you talking about?” Ross sounds quite perturbed.

Quite suddenly Hawkes pushes his chair back, and takes a few paces a way from the table, his fists clasped behind his back.

“I don’t know who you are, but if you think you can mess with Leo Hawkes you are dead wrong.”

That was definitely a true statement. I wish I had never messed with Hawkes. His type, is vicious.

Nox is a shy bean who has horrible luck.

~~~
The second I get to work there are reporters everywhere, shoving and pushing to get to any creator that dares to step outside or any creator who arrives as I had just done. Everyone's too close, pushing and crowding around me, I end up just going in through the side entrance. As I try to find my way to my office I get cornered by some reporters who got into the building.
"How is Rose Corp dealing with this issue?" One questions before a second reporter interrupts them,
"Do you know who is behind Marauders cove disappearance?"
"Where do you think that this phenomenon will occur next if it will occur at all?" A third reporter
asks.
Then a fourth reporter shoulders their way through and says, "What do you think about the plummitof Rose Corp's popularity?" I start to panic and push myself against the wall, luckily a man comes through the door to my right that I didn't notice before, slamming it with such force that I jump. He looks at me with rage filled eyes, seeming to not notice the reporters and drag me into the room where I see there is apparently a meeting going on. Then I realize who this man is, Leo Hawkes. There were a bunch of creators and my supervisor, there was only one face that I recognised in there though, Ross. I just look around the people who have gathered in this room and wish nothing more than to melt into the floor and never be seen again.
"Look who I found spying on me outside the door, another one of your rats." He snarls at Scarlet, "This is why I don't trust you creators anymore." Then he leaves and the room is completely quiet. I spy Ross looking out the door at the reporters who are writing on their notebooks rapidly before he looks at me and seems to piece together what happened.
Leo jumps to conclusions quite a lot.
Kathleen~
When I get into my room, I look around. It's a spacious apartment, with a bathroom, a bedroom, a kitchen, and a small dining room/living room area. I pull my bag into the bedroom, but curiosity keeps me fromfinishing unpacking all the way, and I flop down on the bed and turn on my implant. I don't make any changes to my avatar like I usually would. I get to the plaza, then look around until I find Maraudur's Cove. Or at least, where it used to be. Ben was right. What appears to be a black void fills up the space where the door used to be. I try to look closer, but construction cones, caution tape, and an invisible wall dont let me get much closer. After a few minutes of peering around the cones, I turn off my implant. I grab a pad of paper, jot down a few notes, then read the news articles and jot down a few more. Then, I grab the pad of paper and go to explore Rose Corps from the inside.
When I come out of my room, I see Ben and a few other Rose Corps workers complaining about something. I wave to her. Ben waves back and beckons for me to join them. "Hi," I say.
"Hi, Kathleen," Ben says, and then gesturing to the others, "This is Ross," she says gesturing to a man with dark curly hair and glasses, "Charlie," she says, pointing to a slightly older man with longer curly hair and a tie with little poodles on it, "and Nox," she says, poining to a man with straight black hair and one blue eye and one green eye. "And guys," she says, pointing to me, "This is Kathleen. She's a new recruit."
"Oh, I think I read your application!" says Ross.
"Well, thanks for accepting it. I like your tie," I say, turning to Charlie.
He laughs. "My neice picked it out."
Nox waves awkwardly at me, and then they go back to their conversation.
"Can you beleive that we're suspects?"
"I know, right! Maybe we're being framed."
"Do you think we'll lose our jobs?"
"Nah. Scarlet Hathaway seemed to be on our side."
I interrupt. "You guys are susupects?"
"Unfortunately, yes," Charlie answers
"Well, I guess there's only one way to prove your innocence." I say.
"How?"
"We have to bring Marauder's Cove back."
I hear the radio saying that 'one of the worlds was deleted' I pull up the vertual reality, ( She can do that, and see it, because its in her head and travel where she can see! sorry if this is too complicated and that I seem dead Xd) and try to travel to Marauder's Cove one of my favorite worlds, and It says 'World not found' I pull up the news and gasp at what I 'saw'. I close the vertual reality tab and quickly male my way to Rose Corp. I ask around to see where the creators are, satisfied at where they are, I heas to this girl named 'Kathleen Zishal' I knock on the unfamiliar door, it's hollow sound somewhat welcoming as I hear muffled chatting silenced. The door creaks open and I hear a voice.
" Who is it?" I can only assume it is Kathleen Zishal herself.
" My name is Galelia and I wish to help the creators in finding the dissapeared Marauder's Cove." I say bluntly, timidly and softly. I wait for her response, adter a few minutes of heavy silence, Kathleen responds.
" We are going to need all the help we can get." My smile brightens as I delicatly step inside.
~~
Sorry, If I am being pushy, I just really like this rp and I don't want to leave, but the creators are kindof having their own thing and I am left being the only landowner and its kindof lonely... SORRY!
Ross~
The implications of what has just happened begin to sink in. If Hawkes formally accuses us of this crime, not even Scarlet will be able to help us. In a single day, the company has already suffered losses as many of its shareholders left. After all, who would invest in a company that has large portions of its creations disappear for seemingly no reason?
With no other evidence to be found, Leo's accusations will sound awfully convincing. And if word gets out that Rose Corp has criminals working for it, Scarlet will have no other choice but to fire us for the good of the company. I'll be kicked out of my penthouse, out of the city... I'll have to move back to the mainland and confront my family in the factories. I shudder at the thought of what they might say.
If one thing's for certain, it's that we need to act fast before Hawkes has a chance to destroy 8anyone's life.
We talk for a while about what exactly we should do, until another young woman approaches us. It turns out to be Kathleen Zishal, whose application I approved yesterday. After learning of our plight, she apparently has a plan.
"We need to bring Marauder's Cove back."
"Listen, Kathleen," I say. "I appreciate that you're looking out for us, but you weren't accused of anything. I don't want you to ruin your career before it even starts."
"I want to help," she replies. "Marauder's Cove wasn't just Leo Hawke's world, it was an important place for everyone. And if one world can vanish, who's to say the rest are safe? If we can figure out what happened to it, maybe we can stop it from happening ever again."
I sigh reluctantly. "Alright. If anything, just make sure to finish your assignment on time. This mess doesn't need to involve any more people than it has to. Especially people who don't even work here."
As if on cue, there is a knock on the door.
"Who is it?" Kathleen asks.
"My name is Galelia and I wish to help the creators in finding the disappeared Marauder's Cove," comes a soft reply.
"Galelia? Galelia Drenw, the Landowner?" I hiss, keeping my voice down. "What does she want?"
"She wants to help," Kathleen whispers over her shoulder.
"What, why? She's a Landowner, she has even less to do with this than you do!"
"Why are we whispering?" Charlie breathes.
"Just let her in already" says Ben. "It's free help, it doesn't matter why she wants to do it."
Kathleen nods and opens to door. "We are going to need all the help we can get," she says to Galelia. The pale woman smiles brightly, and enters the room.
The six of us stand in place until Ben asks a fair question.
"What was our plan again?"
An idea enters my mind.  "There's something I should check," I tell the others. "Everyone find a place to sit and meet me in the plaza."
I stride over to the nearest chair and blink out of reality. Once in the plaza, I can see that the chaos hasn't really died down. The missing door has been fenced off, and traffic is proceeding in and out of the other doors as usual, but clusters of avatars are still chattering amongst themselves and casting uneasy glances at the void where the door once was. I wait until the others phase into existence beside me, and motion for them to follow me to the door.
I press a button on my implant and the Creator Interface pops up in front of my arms, a myriad of translucent screens that allow me to alter worlds (alter, mind you, not delete). I walk over to the missing door and deactivate the invisible wall. Carefully approaching the void, I scan it for information. Normally, the code and files of Marauder's Cove and all of its features would appear on my screen. This time, however, there is a single text file. I open it with caution, and I am greeted with an image of a skull and crossbones composed of ones and zeros, as well as a string of normal binary below it.
"Ah shoot," I turn around to the others. "Can anyone read binary?"
"I can," Ben walks up and squints at my screen. After a few seconds, her look of concentration turns to one of foreboding.
I can feel my heartbeat pick up. "What? What does it say?"
She looks at me. "It says 'death before dishonor'."
