Mist and Shadow

Mist and Shadow

This is a short story I wrote for a writing group I'm in. It's eight pages, 4,793 words. (Note: The pages that are in italics are written in white type on black paper in the original document, but since I can't find a way to do that here, those sections will only be italicized. I thought it looked pretty cool on the black paper, so I felt the need to put that out there. XD) I'll be posting this in segments, one or two pages at a time. Critiques and constructive criticism are welcome, and any feedback is appreciated.

Mist and Shadow

Taruk wolves were a harsh race of rough-mannered creatures, not having much in the way of intelligence, but making up for it in strength and brutality. The odd Taruk wolf could be found here and there, but the largest, most notorious pack was located far to the north, where the mountains rose up grey and looming on the horizon, and where the ground was rocky and bare. Their alpha, Rouli, was a half-insane, one-eyed tyrant who was infamous for his cruelty and intolerance for rebellion and challenges to his position.

Astra was a strong-willed, determined Taruk female who quickly earned Rouli’s approval and soon found herself at the position of a high-ranking hunter. She was one of Rouli’s most trusted and valuable hunters, always the one to strategize and give orders and bring down the biggest kills using the combined strength of the pack to its fullest extent.

One day, while she was hunting with a small team of wolves, Astra stopped and sniffed the air. A storm was rising, and fast. She could see it rolling in on the horizon already. Soon the storm was upon them, and they were caught in the middle of a downpour. A fog settled on the plain as the rain came down, obstructing Astra’s vision. Before long, she found herself separated from the others. She wandered in the general direction that she assumed the camp to be in, but to no avail. She was lost, with the rain and fog confusing her nose and her sense of direction, as well as muddling her mind. Finally, the fog lifted, and the rain reduced to a drizzle. But Astra still had no indication of where she was. She wondered for days, trusting her instincts to take her back to her pack. But she only found herself farther and farther from home.

Though discouraged, Astra refused to give up hope. She soon reached a river, and stopped to rest. As she was thirstily lapping up the clear water, she heard a rustle in the thicket a few paces away. She lifted her head, her ears pricking, but she smelled the wolf before she saw him.

He stepped out of the brush, his silver coat a bit weathered, but despite his slightly disheveled appearance, he was quite a handsome creature. His blue eyes gleamed under the moonlight as he padded forward, seemingly unperturbed by Astra’s presence and her unwavering gaze. Astra spoke first.

“Who are you?”

She thought she saw him smirk. “I could ask the same.” There was a short silence, in which the other wolf’s nose twitched. “A Taruk wolf.”

Astra tensed slightly. “How did you know?”

“I would know the scent anywhere.” He came closer, and Astra stiffened, but he didn't seem to notice as he bent to drink. He lifted his head. “What brings you so far from Taruk territory?”

“What business is it of yours?”

He laughed. “If you're lost, you can just admit it.”

She felt a low growl making its way up her throat, but it fizzled when she caught his blue-eyed gaze. All sense of teasing had melted from his eyes, and she thought she detected something else.

“I was hunting. Separated from my team by a storm.”

She wasn't sure why she was telling him this. She had no reason to trust him. But something about the way he was looking at her told her she could.

“I can help you find them,” he said.

She hesitated. She wanted to let him help her, but she was not one to blindly trust.

“You can trust me, you know,” he said, as if reading her mind. “Name’s Rigel.”

“They call me Astra.”

Solstice’s paws burned and her legs begged for a break after running for hours on end. Her lungs burned from sucking in breath after breath of the cold wind that even now ruffled her grey-brown fur, chilling her. Though her brother was two paces ahead of her, she could see that his strength was waning as well. They'd started out at a run, but had lessened their pace little by little as the night wore on, and were now doing well to walk. Solstice forced herself forward, telling her body to put one paw in front of the other, knowing that they had to keep going. By morning, they'd have someone after them. They could use all the head start they could get. This was what their mother had sacrificed everything for, and Solstice wasn't about to waste that.
“I'm not sure how much longer I can go on,” Solstice panted.
“The forest,” replied Orion, between breaths. “If we can just make it to the forest.”
The forest wasn't much farther. In fact, Solstice could just make out the trees in the distance. Heartened by this realization, she put a bit more vigor in her steps, clearing the space between her and Orion. His silver fur gleamed in the moonlight.
When they finally broke the treeline, Solstice felt ready to collapse. The forest was dark, with little moonlight filtering through the leaves. An owl hooted overhead. Something rustled. Solstice noticed a small puddle, the muddy water nearly abosorbed into the ground, but she didn't care as she gratefully let the cool water run down her throat. Orion was close behind, and the next few minutes were filled with the sound of lapping.
Oriom raised his head, licking the last droplets from his muzzle.
“We can stay the night here, but we need to be moving again by dawn.”
Solstice nodded. “There's something over there,” she gestured to the trees to her right with her head. “A cave, maybe, that could suffice for shelter.”
The two wolves started in that direction, and soon reached a small clearing. There was indeed a rock overhang that made for a fairly good-sized cave. But as soon as Solstice stepped foot inside the cave, she knew something was off. The smell. The feeling in the air. Something wasn't right her. She turned back to her brother.
“I don't think we should be here. Something’s wrong. I smell it.”
He nodded. “I felt it too. We should--“ he was interrupted but a sound in the trees behind him. Both wolves turned, hackles raised. The scent of another animal flooded Solstice’s mind. A low growl escaped Orion’s throat as he subconsciously moved in front of his sister. Solstice leapt back as a huge shape burst from the foliage.
The bear lumbered nearer, grunting and snuffling angrily. It had to be more than double her size. Its small eyes gleamed bright against its black fur, and even from here, Solstice could see its wrath. Many bears would leave a wolf alone, but they had just invaded this one’s territory. That was when she heard a mewl from behind her. Her heart sank.
The bear had cubs.
The bear reared up on her hind legs, towering over the wolves. Solstice snarled, trying to intimidate the bear, but without much luck. The bear grunted loudly, then dropped down to all fours and charged.
Orion scrambled back, bumping into Solstice. In the chaos, she lost traction on the slick moss, and flipping her body around, she scrabbled back to her feet. But before she could stand completely, her paw twisted, sending her down with a yelp. The bear was on her now. She didn't know where Orion was. She tried to stand, but her injured paw was making it harder, and the bear was right there and it would have her pinned before she even got the chance to run...
A blurred shape shot toward them from the bushes. She didn't even see it until it slammed into the bear, knocking her away from Solstice. Solstice immediately leapt to her feet and looked around for the bear and her mysterious savior and Orion, but before she could think, someone brushed against her.
“Don't just stand there, come on!” Commanded a gruff voice. Solstice didn't need to be told twice. She took off after the figure, forgetting about her stiffness now that adrenaline was pumping through her veins. Her heart pounded in her ears as she darted between the dark shapes of trees.
Finally, the figure came to halt. She could make him out more clearly now. He was a wolf, slightly larger than her, with fur that blended seamlessly with the night. His eyes were amber, and the only part of him that Solstice could truly see among his dark coat. He was panting. Suddenly, she remembered Orion.
“Where's my brother?”
The wolf looked at her. “You're welcome.”
“What?”
“In case you hadn't noticed, I just saved your life, but no need to thank me.”
Solstice rolled her eyes.
“Sol!” Just then, Orion bounded through the trees.
Solstice turned. “There you are!”
He stopped just in front of her, inspecting her closely. “Are you all right?” Before she could answer, his eyes landed on the stranger. “Who's he?”
“Gee, what's a guy gotta do to get some gratitude around here?”
Orion turned to Solstice with a confused look.
“He distracted the bear,” she explained.
“Saved her from the bear, she means.” The stranger clarified. Turning back to Solstice, he added, “you saw that thing. You wouldn't have been around much longer if I hadn't stepped in.”
Orion ignored him. “Who are you?”
“I...go by Smoke.”
Solstice sighed. “Look, Smoke, thanks for the help back there. We appreciate it. But we really need to be on our way.” She turned back to Orion.
“Whoa, hey,” Smoke stepped in front of her. “What's the hurry?”
Orion narrowed his eyes. “We have places to be. It's not your business.”
“Easy there, pretty boy. I just wanted to offer my help.”
“We can handle ourselves,” said Solstice.
“Sheesh! You Taruks are so distrustful.”
Solstice stiffened. “How did--“
Smoke cut her off. “I've met a few of you here and there. I’ve come to recognize the scent.”
A beat. Then Orion spoke. “Why do you want to help us?”
“You're traveling, and you don't seem to have much experience outside of your pack’s territory. I'm a loner, I know these woods, and I have nothing better to do. Besides, you're heading west. So am I. We might as well stick together.”
Orion looked skeptical. “How did you know we were heading west?”
“What can I say, I'm observant. I notice things.”
Orion huffed, but Solstice pulled him aside.
“Listen. I know he's a stranger and could be any number of other things, and besides that he gets on my nerves, but as much as I hate to admit it, he's right. We need him.”
“He's given us no reason to trust him,” grumbled Orion. “He could turn on us.”
“Yes, but there's two of us. I think we can take him. And...he did save our lives.”
Orion sighed. Then he turned back to Smoke.
“All right. Let's go.”

Rigel brought Astra back to his pack, a small group of good-natured wolves, and explained to them what had happened. They spent the night with Rigel’s pack, and for the first time in her life, Astra knew what it felt like to belong. Though she knew she had a place of value in her own pack, there was something different here. These wolves accepted her for who she was, unlike in her own pack, where one had to work and make themselves valuable in order to find approval.
The next morning, Astra and Rigel set out, making their way north. As they traveled, they grew to like one another better and better, and soon they were very close friends. They endured much together, relying on each other and trusting one another, as true friends should.
By the time they began to reach the end of their journey, Astra realized that she didn't want to go back. During her time with Rigel and his pack, she had come to realize how corrupt and twisted her own pack was. She didn't want to live with that any longer.
And as the bond between herself and Rigel grew stronger and stronger, Astra knew she didn't want to leave him, either. Where before, they had been very good friends, Astra now felt something deeper. She knew Rigel felt it too. In another world, where they weren't from two different packs and separated by miles and miles of distance, they could have been together. But mating between packs was generally looked down upon, and in the case of Taruk wolves, it was altogether forbidden.

Back in Taruk territory, Rouli was furious. He hated to lose wolves. To lose a wolf from his pack was to lose strength and power. Once a wolf joined his pack, they were never allowed to leave.
But this loss had been especially hard. Astra had been his most valuable hunter, his most trusted packmate. But he didn't just value her. He loved her. Or at least, in his corrupted heart, he believed he did. In fact, the day she disappeared was the day he was going to ask her to become his alpha female. And she would accept. Because if she refused...well...he simply wouldn't allow her to refuse.
Rouli sent out a search team immediately. And it wasn't long until they found who they were looking for. But she wasn't alone.

Astra and Rigel were heading North on a particularly windy day. Astra had been voicing her dread about returning to Rouli’s twisted pack.
“You know,” Rigel pointed out. “You could always break off from your pack. Maybe you could run away and join a different one. Or you could run away with me.”
Astra laughed.
“No, I'm serious.”
She looked at him and smiled sadly. “No one is allowed to leave Rouli’s pack.”
Rigel stopped. “You don't have to go back. We could turn around right now. You could come back to my pack, with me. We could be together.”
“Rouli will send a search team. They'll find me.” Her eyes darted around nervously, as if the wolves could be anywhere around. “No one leaves that pack.”
Suddenly, Astra detected something. At first she brushed it off as her dread, but the smell was unmistakeable. “They're here.” Her voice shook as she barely whispered the words.
Rigel was immediately beside her, and she could feel his warmth against her side. He sniffed the air. “I won't let them take you.”
“No, wait,” Astra said, an idea forming in her mind. “Don't fight them. I'll go with them willingly, so that they won't suspect anything. Then I'll find a way out. I'll run away, and I'll find you.”
Rigel sighed. He didn't like it, but it was their best option.
Soon, the team of Taruk wolves were there. Astra approached them, feigning happiness. She quickly explained that Rigel had been helping her find her way home, and then she left with the wolves. As they walked away, she turned to Rigel, mouthing, ‘I’ll find you.’
But one of Rouli’s pets, a nasty wolf named Falo, sensed the bond between Rigel and Astra, and he didn't miss the way Rigel looked at her as they left.

“So, what brings two Taruks west?” Smoke asked.
The three had covered quite a bit of distance the night before, stopping to spend what was left of the night in the shelter of the forest. They'd set out again early that morning. The sky was clouded over in grey, and the air had a sort of heavy chill about it.
Solstice tried to think of an answer that would be satisfactory, but not give too much away. She still didn't know if she could fully trust Smoke.
“We're hoping to reach the black caves, near the sea.”
He looked at her, pricking one ear, as if he expected her to explain more, but she gave him a blank stare that said, that’s all you're getting.
He let out a breath, and Solstice thought she detected disappointment. He looked at Orion. “Did anyone see you leave?”
Orion cast a suspicious glance at him. “Why do you ask?”
“I know more about your type than you think,” replied the black wolf. “I just want to have an idea of how far behind they are. Rouli won't be happy that two young, able-bodied wolves are gone from his pack. I'm sure he's already assembled a search team.”
It was the same worry that had nagged at Solstice for the entirety of their journey so far. She was trying not to think about it.
There was a long silence before she thought to ask, “And what about you? Where are you going?”
“Oh, I'm a wanderer,” replied Smoke. “Not good at staying in one place for long. And I've always wanted to see the ocean.”
Something told Solstice this wasn't the whole reason, but she left it alone.
No one spoke for awhile. They traveled on in silence, their paws crunching on leaves and sticks; the steady brushing sound of one walking through a forest soothing Solstice’s nerves.
Before long, the wind picked up, and Solstice noticed with a sinking feeling that it carried the familiar tinge of bad weather, though it was different than the smell of an approaching storm. Fog was beginning to roll in on the trees in the distance.
“Oh no,” said Smoke. His face showed more concern than Solstice would have liked.
Her tail dropped. “What?”
He ignored her, taking a few steps forward and sniffing the air. He groaned. “I had been hoping to avoid this.”
“Avoid what?”
“The mist.”
“We can handle a little mist, right?” Said Orion.
Smoke shook his head. “No, you don't understand. This isn't any ordinary mist, this mist is...it's bewitched. It's evil. It twists your mind and confuses you and drives you mad so that you lose your way and never find it again. It bends your surroundings against you. And we're in a forest, too.”
“What's bad about a forest?”
Smoke looked grim. “More trees. More weapons to turn on you.”
Solstice gulped. The fog that had been in the distance a few minutes ago was almost upon them.
“We have to keep our heads,” Smoke continued. “Both of you, stay close to me. Whatever happens, we can't separate.”
Now the air was thick with it, and it was blurring everything white. It made Solstice uneasy.
As they moved on, the forest started to move around her. She couldn't tell if she was spinning or if the world was. Orion kept shaking his head beside her, and she knew he was experiencing the same sensation.
Solstice nodded, the motion making her even more confused as to which way was which.
Suddenly, a tree branch swooped down toward her. She yelped and ducked away just before it could throw her to the ground. Her head was spinning now and she couldn't think. She looked around and realized she didn't recognize anything. It was all white. White, white, white.
Voices began to swirl around her. She didn't know what they were saying. That was when she realized she was alone. She was lost and alone and now the world was spinning, spinning.
She collapsed on the ground, sick to her stomach, voices swirling in her head. Calling her. Taunting her. Her eyes were unfocused, staring at nothing. Moisture clung to her fur. The voices were getting louder.
Sooolstiiice. Sooooolstiiiiiiiiiice.
“Solstice!” That one wasn't in her head.
“Smoke?” There was no sign of him through the mist. Maybe she had been imagining it.
“SOLSTICE! Look out!”
She heard the creak of the wood and turned just in time to see the huge tree falling, swooping down. Straight toward her. Before she could tell her legs to move, it was on her and--she was hit with the full force of Smoke’s body, throwing her to the ground and knocking the wind out of her. She heard a sickening crunch and a half-suppressed whine. She leapt to her feet.
“Smoke!”
Grunting, he struggled to stand. The tree had landed on his hind right paw, but thankfully, nothing else. He pulled his foot out from under the splintered wood, growling in pain.
“Are you all right?” Solstice dared to look at his injured paw. He was dragging it behind him, and it was bleeding slightly, as well as being slightly twisted.
“T-thank you,” she said, still shaken. “You didn't have to do that.”
Smoke met her gaze. “We both know I did.” Before she had time to figure out what it meant, he had turned. “Let's get out of here.”
“Where's Orion?” Solstice asked.
“I lost him.”
“What? We have to find him!”
“No, we can't. We won't find him in this mist. It'll lead us astray. We'll be better off searching for him once it lifts.”
Solstice huffed a sigh. “How long until it lifts?”
“It depends. Sometimes hours, sometimes days.”
Solstice groaned. They couldn't afford to lose days.
“There has to be a way out,” she said.
Smoke shook his head. “You saw what it did to your mind. We'd wander in circles until we went mad.”
Solstice wasn't listening. Her attention was on a small bird that was swooping in out of the mist, just ahead. A starling. It flew a little ways toward the wolves, then back in the other direction. It disappeared from sight, then reappeared again, just beside Solstice.
“I may be hallucinating,” said Solstice. “But I could swear that bird wants us to follow it.”
“Hmm,” Smoke pretended to think. “Nope. You're hallucinating.”
Solstice groaned. “Look at it. Maybe it knows the way out.”
He looked at her sidelong. “It's a bird. I doubt it even knows what it's doing. And besides, how do we know we can we trust it? It could be trying to lead us to our deaths.”
She gave him a look. “And you think our kind is distrustful.”
He sighed.
“Fine, stay here and give those angry trees something to do if you like. I refuse to wait here doing nothing a minute longer. I'm going with it.” She started to trot off after the starling.
Smoke trailed after her. “Wait, but we can't split up!”
“Exactly why you'll follow me.”

Rouli was seething. The team of wolves he had sent out before had returned with his beloved Astra just a day ago. He had been so pleased. He had offered her the place beside him as alpha female, explaining that together, they could make the pack the strongest that had ever been. He knew she would accept. How many wolves had dreamt of ruling by his side? But no. She refused.
He had immediately stalked off to his den and sulked. A few of his pets offered their condolences, but it did nothing to ease his rage. Then Falo had entered. Falo was one of his prized wolves, one of his strongest and most loyal, and always the first to inform him of anything he may need to know.
“She was with another wolf when we found her, Alpha,” Falo had said. “And I saw the way that they looked at each other.”
That was all it took. Rouli went from seething to raging, and immediately went to find Astra. He would punish her for this. It was practically betrayal. Treason. She had to be made an example of. But she was long gone.

Astra had run to a nearby forest that night. Rigel was waiting for her, just like they'd planned. After a joyous reunion, the two made the journey back to Rigel’s pack.
They knew Rouli would try to track Astra, and so, for the safety of everyone, the pack moved to the black caves near the sea.
Astra and Rigel lived happily as mates for some time. It wasn't long before Astra gave birth to two pups, a boy and a girl. Their parents swore to do anything to protect them.
But then he came. The pups were still young, and Astra was down by the sea, where she went often to be alone and think. And then she heard it. The sounds of snarling and fighting wolves. She raced up to the caves, and gasped. Rouli was there with many of his strongest pack members. Together, they outnumbered her own pack. And the two packs were fighting.
Over her.
And there, in the middle of the fight, was her own Rigel against Rouli. There was something fierce in Rigel's eyes, and she knew he would fight to death to keep them from taking her. But there was something fierce in Rouli's eyes, as well. Anger. Fury. He was facing off with the wolf who had everything he wanted.
Several wolves had already been lost, and Astra couldn't bear to see any more die on her behalf. And she knew that if she surrendered herself now, Rigel could live and raise their pups as a part of the pack.
“Stop!” She yelled. Everyone froze, their attention glued to her. “I will come willingly,” she was speaking to Rouli, but she looked at Rigel as she said it. “Just leave the rest of the pack alone.”
Rouli laughed. It was harsh, disgusting sound that made Astra want to gag. She hated the idea of going back with him, but she knew the pups would be safe if she did so.
Until she heard one of them cry. She cringed, and Rouli looked intrigued. He ordered two of his wolves to investigate, and was quite pleased at the outcome.
“This was well worth the journey,” he laughed. “I get my prize, as well as two strong young additions to my pack.” Astra’s heart sank, but there was nothing she could do now.
She and the pups returned to the mountains. She knew she would be punished for betrayal, but Rouli was allowing her to have extra food and rest until the pups could be weaned. Though Astra knew he only cared about their strength and welfare because they would someday become assets to his pack. Puppets.
But Astra had other plans.
It had been a year. Astra was now the omega. She didn't have much to lose. But she was about to sacrifice everything to give her pups freedom. It was midnight. The safest time for them to run away. So she told them everything.
“Solstice, Orion, listen to me,” she said, finally. “You are strong. You are brave. You will find your father. I know you can do this. But I can't come. Rouli might have me killed for this, but it's worth it. It was always worth it. Everything I've done has been for you. Tell your father I love him. I love you, my brightest stars.”
