Chatterbox: Inkwell

July 25, 2018

Mexico had become corrupted. The government was evil. Anyone who questioned their ways was killed. It was unrecognizable from the place I had grown up in since I was a baby. The place I had known was full of festivals and dancing and laughter.

Today I saw my mom packing our few belongings. My art I had done as a 5 year old, the blue green rug my grandmother had given us, water for days, and food. Confusion filled me.

I asked her why she was packing. She looked at me straight in the face and said “America”

Day 1 of the journey to America

The hot sun beat on my back and my mouth felt like parched paper. Flat clay colored land filled with shrubs stretched for miles. Sweat bedded on my head. I took a water bottle from the bag I was carrying and just as I was about to take a drinkmy mom grabbed it and put it back in the bag. Confusion bubbled inside me and a little anger.

She patted my head. I hate that. "Sorry, baby We can only have two waterbottles  a day and you already had your first. You should save it."

I nodded, hating that she was right. She grabbed my hand and we continued into the unknown.

Continued journey of day 1

The indigo sky was full of stars. Everything was dark and the night air was freezing. I scooted closer to my mom, trying to get warm; she was gently snoring.

I broke off a small branch from leaves that hung over us. We sat under a bush. I twirled the branch, wondering how my mom could sleep.

Wasn’t she full of fear and uncertainty and excitement?! Wasn’t she worried they wouldn’ take us in!?

Wasn't she scared at all?

I was.

Day 2 of the journey

The weather was back to scorching hot. Me and my mom sat by a tiny pond, splashing water on our faces. The water cool and refreshing on my face, making me feel more energized.

“This feels amazing.” I said.

Mom nodded, smiling at me a little.

—————-

In the hazy air I could see faint black shapes stretching for miles. Excitement filled me. Was it the border??

Mom grabbed my hand and squeezed it. She gave me a giant smile, pointing at the black shapes. “That’s the border, honey!”

Excitement and fear filled me. All the doubt I had last night  came rushing back. Hope sprang up in my chest.

I quickened my pace, ingnoring my doubts.

I broke into a run, trying to forget my fear. My mom ran right by me, clutching my hand.

The black shapes got closer and closer....

I stood, facing a wire fence, shivering a little despite the heat. I squeezed my mom hand and she looked me, giving me a thin reassuring smile. All my joy was gone.

A army officer stood by the fence, looking at us with cold eyes and daring us to cross.

My insides turned to lead. I looked up to my mom, confused and scared. she had said nothing about army officers at the border and nothing about how were going to cross. I thought I knew the plan but I was mistaken.

“Mom?” I whispered.

She looked at me, squeezing my hand. “Listen baby what we are about to do is dangerous….but its going to be okay, trust me. Follow my lead.” Her voice was strong and unworried but her eyes betrayed her.

She walked to the fence, taking out bolt cuter from a bag. “Mom! What are you doing!” half yelled, half whispered. She had never told me about bolt cutters…..

The army officer eyes remained pinned on my mom as she cut the wire slowly. The sound of metal bending rang through the air.

Fear shot through me as I watched the officer taked out a walkie talkie.

“Mom!” I shouted.
