Sunshine and Naomi

Chatterbox: Inkwell

Sunshine and Naomi

Sunshine and Naomi were best friends. They were very unusual best friends: Although they lived on opposite sides of the same street, on the same block, they only met on Fridays at eCreamery. No exceptions. At eCreamery, Sunshine told Naomi all the news of the rest of America and the world around them. Naomi would sit quietly and format views. She never talked, just listened.

One Friday, on a hot afternoon, Sunshine slipped into the third booth to the right inside the eCreamery. Naomi came in seconds later, taking a seat opposite from her. The cashier lady knew them by name, and a minute later, their usuals were on the table. (Chocolate Chip for Naomi and Peach for Sunshine, as well as a coffee for Sunshine and mint tea for Naomi)
Taking a small bite, Sunshine started to talk. She told Naomi of the recent protests, the new iPhone, and the latest about the next election. Naomi would take mesured bites, sipping her tea and staring directly at Sunshine, who was currently lecturing her about the election process.

And so they continued, doing their thing, until the boy entered the eCreamery.
He had vibrant red hair, very different from the muted red-brown locks that Naomi wore up in a braided bun. His eyes, bright blue, had the same crystal-clear pressure as Sunshine's-except hers were green. But the thing he had all to himself was the fact he sported a hurried, nervous look, his feet anxiously pawing at the tiled floor. The cashier looked up, then went back to her romance novel. The boy seemed to melt into the cheery yellow walls, his gray shirt wrinkling as he sunk down, wrapping his arms around his knees. Sunshine paused. Naomi put down her tea.

And so it begins.

Naomi set down her tea and mulled over iPhones and how badly she wanted one. After that was mulled, she started mulling the protests. Fools, she thought darkly. She did not notice any new arrivals. However, Sunshine did. She thought the boy was cute, but she had no intention of doing anything to him. She went back to her ice cream.

Yeah, it's an ice cream place I walk to every once in a while.
