I really like The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale, and anything by Gail Carson Levine is pretty good. I haven't read enough of Hale's work to know if I can say the same thing about her.

You should try the Bartimaeus trilogy by Jonathan Stroud. They're very good. Don't read his other book, Heroes of the Valley, because it's a bit of a letdown, but the Bartimaeus trilogy is really well-written. What else... Well, I'm reading The Neverending Story by Michael Ende right now, and that's really genius. And I second Emily's suggestion too, GCL is a wonderful writer. :)

Hope that helped, and happy birthday! :)

IF you can find them, get the Archives of Anthropos. Awesome, awesome amazing books. Highly recommended by me. Almost no one has heard of them :( but (I own them) everyone I've lent them to loves them a ton. So, you'd probably have to order them from somewhere, but it's worth it. Oh, and don't get the last two if you can help it. They were written a couple of years after the first four, and are kind of a letdown to someone (me) who's completely fallen in love with the first four. They're by John White, and there's, um...

1. The Tower of Geburah

2. The Iron Scepter

3. The Sword Bearer

4. Gaal the Conqueror

I have to go. I can come back later if you like. :)

You should get any book written by Scott Westerfield (Uglies series, Midnighters series) or Kenneth Oppel (Airborn series, Silverwing series).
