Mazatl so knows something about both the train stopping and Silver’s laptop. I’ll have to talk to him later, but right now, I want sleep. From this morning until tonight felt like three days instead of one, and I’m worn out. I don pajamas and slip under the blankets on the bed. I fall asleep within minutes.

When I wake up, confusion settles over me. My watch says it’s nine a.m., but the sky outside my window is still pitch black. I flip on the light switch. The brightness reveals my tiny sleeping quarters. I change out of my pajamas and move into the hallway. Brow furrowed, Tsuki stands in front of her own door, holding a beagle’s leash. “It’s morning, right?” She turns to me.
“Nine a.m., yes,” I confirm.
“Well, why’s it still dark?”
I shrug. “No idea.”
“Should we wake everyone else?”
“I guess so.” I don’t know why she thinks I have all the answers.
Tsuki turns away and knocks on Dr. Ruthie’s door. Breathing a plume of flame, Dr. Ruthie opens the door. “What?” she asks grumpily.
“Look out your window.” Tsuki points past the half-dragon. Dr. Ruthie turns to look. “Huh, that’s weird,” she says. I stay out of the action while Tsuki knocks on everyone’s doors, pulling her pet along.
The hallway is dark. Feeling along the wall for the switch, I flick on the light. That’s better. As I glance back at Tsuki, I notice that she appears to be finished. Anon, Silver, Tsuki, Dr. Ruthie, and I head to the common area. I stand to the side to allow everyone else past.
Gathered at one table, we all discuss the latest development in the strange occurrences aboard the train. Something is obviously wrong, but what should we do about it? Dr. Ruthie and I think interrogating the staff is the best option, Tsuki and Anon want to search the whole train for clues, and Silver thinks we should just wait until we arrive at Grapvale.
“We don’t all have to investigate the same way, do we? There are five of us, so we can split up. It’s not like anything dangerous has happened,” Silver says, trying to avoid an argument.
“That makes sense,” Anon says.
“Me, too,” Tsuki agrees
“Okay,” adds Dr. Ruthie. I voice my assent also. The only thing left to decide is where to start the investigation.
And then Mazatl enters, interrupting the discussion. “We’re almost to Grapvale. I suggest you start packing up your belongings. There’s breakfast ready in the dining room.”
“I don’t suppose you know why it’s still dark outside?” I ask, not really expecting an answer.
“It’s nine thirty. It’s not dark,” Mazatl looks just as confused as yesterday.
“Well, never mind.”
I repack my suitcase and head down to breakfast in the dining car.

The room is just as nice as the other parts of the train. The table is elegant, but not opulent. Waffles, bacon, and fruit are set on the table. I sit beside Anon. They eat a banana daintily, while I scarf down my waffles with whipped cream. Mazatl stands around, refilling orange juice and taking away used napkins. In unspoken agreement, none of us mentions our investigation around him.
The sky outside the windows is still dark. The sight creeps me out. I feel awake, like it’s morning, but the darkness throws me off. I don’t like this. I wish I had never boarded. I’m sure I could have researched my book somewhere else. Finished eating, I go back to my sleeping car.
Doodling in the margins of my puzzle book, I whittle away the minutes until I feel the train stop. We have arrived at Grapvale. Just before I collect my luggage, I have a revelation. I know why all these bizarre events happened on the Phantom Express!

YAY THIS IS AWESOME

As I was reading this, Ranger (who exists in real life!) fell asleep on my lap.

I can't wait for the next part, it's such a cliffhanger...

Confetti says "zeddo". Never heard of it but it sounds like it should be a word.
