Villains

Who are your favorite villains?  Least favorite?  What do you think makes a great villain?  Have any of you made any extraordinary (or ordinary for that matter) villains recently?  Also, any advice for making a great villain?  Sorry if there's already a villain thread, though I didn't see one!

Villain chat room! Muahaha!

Oh, and TNÖ, this is where Voldy takes over the world! :)

I disagree. Villans need a motive for being evil.

Hey there!  I just wanted to bounce up my thread to somewhere near the top to see if anyone has new views or if any new people want to join the currently deceased conversation.  Also, I wanted to reply to a comment TNÖ made in one of her extremely long post (no, I like them, don't get me wrong).  I am "re-reading" the fifth book of Harry Potter currently.  Well, I read all seven with my dad and now I'm listening to the audiobook with my mom, who only read the first four.  We started from book one on a long road trip and we're now on book five.  (We listen on the 45 minute drive to orchestra rehearsal every Sunday evening, which by the way is three hours from 5 to 8, but that's a different matter.)  I realize how much more I hate Umbridge than Voldy.  First off, Voldy has a twisted sense of humor.  It's great.  But Umbridge is just plain evil.  Though I do love the way the reader of the audiobook does her, "Hem.  Hem."  It's hilarious.  Also, I tell you, I'm emotional in books.

*SPOILER ALERT FOR PENDRAGON FANS*  When Saint Dane, the evil guy, died, in the last book, I cried.  I'm serious.  I had apparently built up a bond with SD and I missed him.  Yes, I know he was an evil demon who committed genocide whenever possible and made people feel really bad about themselves, but... um... how do I say this?  I guess I somehow liked him?  No, that's not true.  Well, I don't know.  I guess in a way he was a main character.  He was always there in every book trying to stop Bobby and Co.  So yeah.  And I don't cry in movies, for some reason.  It must be because books are more descriptive in their own way.  But see, I'm rambling.  So I'll stop.  *END OF SPOILER*

Anyway, I would very much like it if people began posting on this thread again, since I think it would be a fun addition to the front page.

And I have a new favourite villain. *squee!* Redd. Or Rose Heart, or Her Imperial Viciousness. She is *epic!*

If only Frank Beddor wasn't so afraid of looking like he likes his villains better than his Mary Sue MCs...

Ah yes, Mary Liz. I have another friend (who talks about The Looking Glass Wars a lot) who likes Redd, too. I need to read that, don't I?

This is really interesting, because I like to see what people think a good villain is like, because I want to compare my own villain in my story. I think she has a good backstory, not cheezy, but still not  the kind that makes you sympathetic.

Dracea is an evil queen. She led a bunch of wicked Faeries into seccession from the Faerie Kingdom. Her evilness is due purely to her own pride, but she also thinks she has a prophecy in her favor that proclaims her as the rightful queen of the Faeries.

Ps. TNO, where did you find out all that stuff about Ursla?

Re: Dracea: Without knowing much about her, I'm inclined to like her. So long as she doesn't go in for too much Bond Villain Stupidity, of course.

Re: Ursula: It's established in the theatrical version, mostly with the song I Want the Good Times Back ("When daddy dear was floating on his deathbed/He divvied up the kingdom into two/I got his magic shell, and half the sea as well/His trident went to... you know who.../My reign why it was blissfully delicious/And glamour, glitz, and style were au courant/Did I use some black magic?/Well oopsie my bad/Did I mutilate, maim, and destroy?/Just a tad/And for that I get banished/But me, I'm not mad/There's just one little thing that I want/Just one eensie, teensie thing that I want.../I want the good times back...") Huzzah for Character Development. How she and Triton are siblings while also being entirely different species is entirely beyond me, but who cares?

The Ursula is Triton's Sister thing was supposed to be in the animated canon, but it got cut because they couldn't find a way to bring it up without it being an obvious infodump. The play does it quite nicely by making the celebration at the beginning (with the sisters singing) a celebration of the (from what I gathered) anniversary of Triton's triumph and banishment of his *dear* sister Ursula. Cut to her and the eels ranting about it two scenes later, and probably simultaneously with the celebration.

Yeah.

That would make sense then. I love The Little Mermaid, but I never saw the musical of it. And I HATED the Little Mermaid II. Sometimes you can tell when they're just trying to make an extra buck.

Re: Dracea: Originally in my story she was just the boring evil queen who they were fighting. But it changed a bit, because the real Queen of the Faeries, Lunacea (pronounced like "echinacea") was chosen to be queen only because of (to make a long story short)a rather cryptic prophecy. Dracea thinks the prophecy applies to her, (again, simplified) and that's how come she was able to rally all the supporters. She's trying to put herself on the throne, and she really, actually, beleives she has a right to it.

As far as villains go, I'm going to have to go with Malificent (sp?) on that one.  She is delightfully evil.  To me, the best villains aren't the bloodthirsty, roaring, murderous ones... they're the poised, soft-spoken, cunning ones.  The ones that pretend to be virtuous and are second-in-command.  The ones who don't initially SEEM that dangerous.

To me personally, I loved to HATE Umbridge much more than Voldemort in HP.  Voldy's evil was taken for granted--he was classic evil.  Umbridge was more sneaky, sadistic evil.  Her detention quills said it all for me.

Pick your favorite villians from the villian list, one male, one female, and tell why. (And yes, I realize that these lists are COMPLETELY random. So what else is new?)

Male:

The Lone Power (YW) (Technically genderless, but usually appearing as a man.)

Voldy (HP)

Count Olaf (SOUE)

IT (Wrinkle in Time)

Capricorn (Inkheart)

Kronos and/or Luke (Percy Jackson)

Ledroptha Curtain (MBS)

Arch (LGW)

Female:

Bellatrix (HP)

Redd (LGW)

The Troll Queen (East)

The White Witch / Jadis (Narnia)

Esmé Squalor (SOUE)

Esmeli (YW) (Technically an avatar of the Lone Power, but I included her because I didn't have enough females. Anyway, the Lone Power is so much creepier, IMHO, when It's being a woman.)

The Queen (The Wee Free Men)

I think I would have to say my favorite of the males is Lone Power -- I mean, it's impossible to like him as a person, but I like reading about him. And in the females, O, Redd, I guess.

I think that The Adderhead, from Inkspell and Inkdeath is better than Capricorn.
