The City of

Chatterbox: Inkwell

The City of

The City of One Thousand Stars

Once upon a time, perhaps long ago, perhaps in the distant future, perhaps now, perhaps stretching between all of those, perhaps in a time that is beyond anyone's imagining, there was a city.

A city with tall majestic buildings made of glass, and tiny dull ones made of wood, and several imposing ones made of stone. A city built where the waters of the Blue Sea and the Winding River meet, a city just warm enough to have winters where, unless things are more extraordinary than usual, it doesn't snow.

But, despite the location and the timing and the climate and the architecture, the City of One Thousand Stars was most special because of its inhabitants. Each of them, young or old, big or small, farmer or writer, trader or leader, just-moved-in or fifth-generation resident, from the time they set foot in the City with an intent to stay, had a special ability. A power, a knack, a savvy, a gift, their own special sort of magic. What in olden times was to be called a star, which lead to the city's name. For instance, one of the inhabitants had never needed to breathe. Another could be invisible whenever they chose. And yet another had the power to tell when fruit was ready to be picked.

In this City, everyone was different, but everyone was kind to one another, because the only thing they had in common was being different from each other. Mostly, that is. Sometimes there were cases of people doing things that were untoward, or rude, or even occasionally illegal.

But most of the time, in the City of One Thousand Stars, everyone helped, everyone listened, and everyone cared.

-----------------------

This is an RP (my first one, so I'm excited), and there are a couple of things I'd like to clarify, because the introduction doesn't explain too much other than what the city's like:

1.  Your character can be any age. Children and teens ages 5-17, however, will attend the City School unless you'd like them to be homeschooled. The City School is an institution spread out around the City, with different buildings for different subjects in different areas. It is connected by the City's underground train system (students will ride trains between classes).

2. Characters' powers will only be one ability, like telekinesis or flying or baking pies, as opposed to, for instance, telekinesis, healing, and telepathy.

3. I don't really know what the plot will be like, but it can be relaxed, or mystery-related, or (if  we have a lot of school-aged characters) centered around the City School, or something else. Not all characters have to meet each other (the City is fairly large), but they can.

4. You can have up to 5 characters, although you don't need that many.

5. Here is the form:

"I think we should investigate Mr. Grebnesor," says Aventurine. "Go into the antechamber or whatever it's called."
"It's not that kind of day," I say. It's just before Ms. Rosen's class, and we're on the train.
"Well then," says Aventurine, "for me it is that kind of day." And of course, after Ms. Rosen's class, I follow Aventurine to Mr. Erlenmeyer's classroom. This is a very risky maneuver, but, perhaps because he doesn't have any papers to grade, Mr. Grebnesor is not there.
We go into the office off the classroom. It's been transformed since I last saw it: The papers are gone and the bulletin board is prisitine. I look around and find the "Casey Rosenberg" sign in the recycling, and there are cleaning products and a rag on the desk. That must be how Mr. G took away the writing on the board.
"Mr. G is hiding the evidence," says Aventurine.
"Shhh!" I say, too late. Some footsteps are coming. I pull Aventurine under the desk and crouch with her, pulling a paper shredder and the recycling bin in front of us.
"Mr. G?" asks the voice of Mx. Alberts, who is the Science Division Leader for City School. "Are you here? I want to discuss about the hiring." Mx. Alberts walks closer. Please please please do not look under the desk!!! I implore them.
"Casey Rosenberg," says Mx. Alberts, and then turns on their heels and walks away. I look at my watch, time ninety seconds, and then usher myself and Aventurine out of the desk. Aventurine puts the bins away.
"At least now they know," I say.
"True," says Aventurine. "We left the door open."
"Maybe Mx. Alberts did?" I ask hopefully, but that's a bit of a lie, because Mx. Alberts is always pristine and has cleaner clothes even than the principal.
We walk out and Aventurine closes the door, and I hope that things will take a turn for the better.

Sorry this took SO MUCH LONGER than it really should have, especially given the quality... ugh
•l_Cassandra_l•

Mr. Ernestmeier isn't here in science today, which is just as well, as I got a bit distracted on homework yesterday while watching the elephants roam in Africa (just something I like to do). The teacher is Mr Grebnesor instead, who's nice, but for some reason the whole time I was in class, I kept thinking that "science is cool", which, it is - science is my favorite subject! - but was still slightly interesting because it... didn't really feel like it was my thought, exactly? But I decide it's probably just my overactive imagination acting up again. I mean, just a few days ago, I had even thought I'd seen a ghost! Can you believe it? I was just walking down the street and saw this man or whatever, playing a sax, singing something about a Zeithran star or whatever? Then he just flickered and disappeared! Who knows. Anyway, at lunch, I decide to go to Mr. G's classroom to ask for an extension on the homework, which was a self-experiment of our own design. I'm testing what effect different ice cream flavors in the morning have on my mood. So far, I have mint chip (chipper, fittingly), red velvet (meh, normal), rasberry rush (kinda hyper), and vanilla/cookies and cream (content). I need to test 15 different flavors in total for it to count, though, and the project was due today. When I get to the science room, however, no one is in. Two of my classmates, I think their names are... Aventurine and... Dolores? Dorrie? are exiting and so I ask them "Hey, do you know where Mr. G is? I need to ask him about something."

(Newly Arrived)

I get my schedule and wander around the school, trying to find my classroom. I walk up, past Mx. Alberts, muttering about someone called “Casey Rosenberg” and something about the science classroom. Why does their name sound… familiar?  I find myself near what I presume is the science classroom, where two people walk out a moment later. Well, that was an interesting coincidence. I walk up to them and ask, “Hey, odd question, do you know anyone named Casey Rosenberg?” They looked surprised, but exchanged a knowing look between them.

What’s up with that name? And what do those two know about it?

"Why?" Aventurine asks, to perhaps both of the students standing by us.
"Um, I wanted to know something," says one of the students, Cass (?).
"No, it's OK," I tell her. "Mr. G isn't in his classroom."
"Should I tell him you were looking for him?" she says.
"No, please don't," I say a bit too nervously.
"Why?" they ask, giving me an eagle eye.
"We were looking to see if he had extra copies of a textbook," says Aventurine. "I lost mine, and to be honest Mr. G doesn't like it when I'm scatterbrained."
"Oh, OK," says Cass.
"Anyway, do you know a Casey Rosenberg?" Ezra asks. "I heard Mx. Alberts talking about someone with that name."
"I don't," I say. "Do you?"
"As it turns out," Ezra tells us, "I do. Casey Rosenberg is my neighbor, and he's always bringing in weird packages."
"Huh," says Aventurine. "Nice to see you." And then we leave.

I internally groan. Gosh, that was so stupid of me. “Nevermind,” I say to Dorrie and Aventurine. “Sorry about that.”

Also,  @Seadragon, should Ezra be new or has he been at the school for a while?

"Hey Ky!" Violet exclaims. "Where'd you go yesterday afternoon?"
Ky is one of our roommates at Beachside, which Violet opened to everyone to stay. He's mostly quiet and keeps to himself, which I don't mind.
"Bookstore and library," he replies simply. He continues to walk to his room, and I assume he will enter, but he pauses just before and asks us, "Have you heard of the Zeithran Star before?"
"The Zeithran Star," I repeat. "I...might've heard of it somewhere. It was magical or something."
Violet's eyes are shimmering with excitement as she says, "Oh! I've heard fairy tales about it as a kid! It supposedly grants wishes and is full of magic!"
"Sounds like a fairy tale," I say.
Ky nods seriously. "So do you know if it's...actually real?"
"Real!?" I laugh. I then pause for a moment, thinking about it. "Could be possible. But unlikely."
Violet nods in agreement. "It would be cool to look into it."
"Thanks," Ky replies. "Are you headed off to the City School?"
I groan, but nod. Violet also nods.
"Mind if you keep a lookout for anything useful about it that you see?" he asks.
"Sure!" Violet smiles. "Kay, Cele, let's go! We don't want to be late!"
I sigh but shoulder my backpack and follow her. It's going to be a long day.

Someone has put a few more books into the donation box. I mark them with prices, scan them into the system, and put them on the shelves. The titles are Muffins for Beginners, despite the sign reading "We Have Enough Cookbooks" on the donation box; Traveling the Winding River, A History of the Blue Sea Salt Harvesters, and The Zeithran Star.
Wait. I pick up the last one and find myself wondering if I should hold it for Ky. I haven't taken his business card home; I put it in the compartment on my typewriter.
Oh goodness. Is something happening between me and Ky? Who knows. I put the book on the shelf and go back to shelving books.

Tomorrow, and the day after, are boring.
Then, on Saturday, interesting things happen.
My eldest cousin, Kaitlyn, arrives by riverboat from The City of Mountains and Snow. Kaitlyn is sixteen, and she visits on her own a lot. We take her to a hotel and assist her in checking in.
And, walking down the hallway in the hotel, I run into my science teacher.
"Hi, Mr. E," I say.
"Huh? Oh, hi, Dorrie," he says. "BTW, I'm changing your grade to a B minus."
"Thanks," I say.
However, my mom notices this and pounces on Mr. Erlenmeyer.
"Are you Emil Erlenmeyer?" she asks.
"Um... yes, why?"says Mr. E.
"Why have you been absent from City School?"
"Circumstances beyond my control," says Mr. E.
"What circumstances would leave you in this hotel?"
"If you must know, I don't have much money, and I was forcibly put out of my house recently." I think he's lying. He looks directly at my mom and doesn't blink at all. As well, he usually uses far less formal language--he calls me Dorrie, doesn't mind if we call him Mr. E, and loves to use contractions.
"Well then," she says. "I filed a complaint, but it appears they got a sub. Keep this in mind."
She then turns on her heel, even though she has to turn back on her heel to actually get to Kaitlyn's room, and we follow her.

Hm-m...the Zeithran Star, I think to myself. I've always thought that it was a simple little tale about magic that my mom would always read to me before bed. A bit of sadness washes over me as I think about my mom. I wish she was here. Then I could ask her all these questions that I have. There are so many things I don't know!

The school is same as always, with a few subs here and there, like the one for science. Nothing too crazy, really. I wish I could say that I like school, but I'm really indifferent about it. There are some good subjects, some boring, some confusing, and making friends usually come easily for me...usually.

My first class is ELA with Mrs. Kynoa, who's a relatively nice teacher, though she assigns a lot of essays. Some are easier to write, like narrative writing, but sometimes, it's not so lucky, like today. We get assigned a research essay on myths and legends, in which we write a detailed summary of its history, where it comes from, if it could be true or if it's fake, etc. At first, I feel a bit of dread writing so much (five pages at minimum!), but then I realize something. I could write about the Zeithran Star! Now that would be an interesting topic, and I can help Ky!

Throughout the rest of the day, I feel excited—excited to work on a research essay, of all things! But this one...this one will be much more interesting to write.
