Chatterbox: Inkwell

Preface:

In a little part of a large city, there was a town. A small one, but with many people. Life had been getting hard for the people of the town  because with global warming, the winter seemed to arrive much quicker, causing animals (and people) to be freezing in their homes. At Redcrest Academy, the town’s main school, all kinds of books had been banned. In an apartment in this town, a secret place was found…

Carmen ran up the stairs to her room, backpack slung over one shoulder. “Phew…” She let out a breath and checked her watch. “Okay, I made it before 4:00. Mother won’t be angry.” She unzipped her backpack and took out her computer. “Time to get to work.” She opened up some class assignments and when the computer buzzed to let her know of a notification. I don’t want to procrastinate again but…. Maybe this is something important? She checked her email and spotted a text from one of her friends. It read, “Carmen? Remember how your apartment was completely designed and built by the previous owner? Well, I remember how when I last went to it and bumped against the wall in the hallway. It was hollow.” After reading it, Carmen went over to the hallway right outside of her apartment room and knocked on it. A while went by until the knock revealed a hollow part. It was in the area with a built-in shelf. Carmen groped around the sides of it, feeling for a crack in the shelf, an opening. When she found it, she pulled the shelf out, revealing that it was a door. She walked inside, closing the door and saw… a massive library, untouched for years.

~Info/Rules~

Hello! I hope you would like to join and I want to clarify a few things here.

  1. Your character can be any age, as long as you find a way to fit it within the overarching story. For example, having a character aged 15-17 goes to Redcrest Academy, while other ages should fit into it somehow (perhaps by having a sibling at the academy or your character living in the apartment).

  2. No magical characters or such. Please make sure to make your characters completely human

  3. You can make up to 3 characters (although that isn’t necessary)

This is the Form:

Classroom (optional):

Home/Apartment Section/Housemates:

Note: I will post Carmen’s form, as well as descriptions of the school and apartment later. Before then, I’ll post the beginning of the story.

Celeste and Violet seem like cool characters! The classrooms are mainly random but are divided by age. Homerooms are on different floors (the 15 year olds have homerooms on the first floor, 16s on the second, you get the pattern). About it being a solo-write, I don't really know. It will have an overarching plot but people can mainly include their own drama and stuff.

Also, wow! I love the characters. For classrooms, Esmeralda can be in 303, Violet can be in 102 or 304, whichever one you want for her. For Maisie, it's the same one. Marriage, idk. Do you want her to be on the third floor or 304, on the second? And Harmony could be in 303 with Esmeralda. Sorry if this is confusing.

One last note: I'll post the first chapter soon.

(November 30, 2023 - 10:49 pm)

Hi! I finally finished the first chapter. It is quite long, but it's to kick the story off. Somone can include a chapter of their own and their character's thoughts on the assembly and I'll post a chapter with the aftermath and Carmen's idea.

~Carmen~

The library was huge, in shades of rich browns and sepia. It was filled with rows of bookshelves decorating the walls. Oddities filled the shelves and were strewn around the room. There was an old-fashioned furnace in one corner, as well as a large desk and oak coffee table. There was only one window inside the room, and it was closed by extravagant blinds, with a window seat beneath it. The desk was decorated with model ships, maps, and other curious objects. Whoa… The library was beautiful and I marveled at it. I walked up the winding stairs to an upper portion, an unfinished attic. On my hand, my watch suddenly beeped. I checked the time, it was 6:40. I ran down the stairs, out the door, and slowly closed it behind me. I walked to our apartment, and ate dinner. Afterward, I went to bed.

Next Day:

“This ecosystem depends on each individual organism to survive. The fish depend on the plants to survive and the plants depend on their waste to grow, because of the minerals inside of it.” Mx. Williams, our biology teacher and 304’s homeroom teacher, started. They gestured toward the large fish tank, with aquatic creatures swimming around inside. Above them were plants with their roots submerged in the water. “This-” Their speech was cut short by a buzz from the intercom. “Hello, students!” Crackled the intercom. “Principal Ramírez speaking. Please go to the auditorium for an grade-wide assembly. It is mandatory.” After she finished speaking, the intercom clicked off. “Alright. It seems our lesson plan has been cut short for an important assembly. Please form a single-file line.” We all started talking amongst ourselves while walking to form a line. Seems like there must be something urgent or important, hopefully they won’t do another one of their ‘talks.’ At least it’s a break from class. When we got to the assembly, I noticed the other students standing, stone-faced. We could choose our seats, so Clementine and I sat down next to Harmony. “Hey, we’re here,” I said to her. “Hi,” she said with a small smile, looking up from her book. “Might I ask what this assembly is about?” I wondered. Harmony nodded. “It hasn’t started yet, but I do know that it’s about some important changes to our school.” Changes? Clementine and I exchanged a confused look. We settled in and waited for the assembly to begin. “Hello, hello,” said Principal Ramírez. “Now, this assembly is for something very important.” Her tone grew colder. “It has come to our attention that at this school, people have been behaving disorderly, even getting into fights, as well as being chaotic throughout the school. Because of this, we have decided to make some important changes, constant throughout every grade and class in this school. You 15-17 year olds are the first to learn about it, isn’t that cool?” Everybody groaned. “Okay, okay. Tough bunch here, so I’ll make this quick.” Principal Ramírez pulled up a slideshow called ‘Redcrest Changes.’ “Vice Principal Parker will teach you all about them.” She walked away and the vice principal walked onto the stage. “Redcrest Changes.” He clicked the slide and it went to the next. “Alright. Principal Ramírez has told you the reason for these changes and I’ll start explaining what they are.” He clicked his remote, but it didn’t go to the next slide. He started mashing the button and trying to figure it out. We all started muttering amongst ourselves. “This is extremely frustrating,” I stated. “All schools have fights and chaos. Why must ours change?” Clementine shrugged. “Stricter school probably.” Harmony nodded. “Well, at least it’ll stop the fighting, I hope.” She looked up as the vice principal finally got to the next slide. “We’ll start off with going in and out of the school. We have designated exits by color on your classroom door. For you students, yellow goes out Door 4 and orange goes out Door 12. Security guards will be standing by in different stations so students can find the right place. No going right to the main door, as that is the place where most fighting occurs. Makes sense, right?” He didn’t give us a chance to speak and just went to the next slide. “The second change to our school relates to seating. After your classes’ lunch especially, the lunchroom is extremely messy. For this reason, we have decided to do assigned seats in the lunchroom. Outside of lunch, classes are disruptive and disorderly, so there will be assigned seats in all of your classes, apart from electives.” After that news was broken, we started to get up when the principal said, “Oh! One last thing.” I rolled my eyes. This is the worst. “It has come to our attention that our library has some… unsuitable books; and so we have decided to (temporarily) close it down while we sort through the shelves. Don’t fret, as we’ll have bookshelves in the classrooms for you to read. And with this, I bid you adieu.” He smiled and we got into lines and started walking back up to our classrooms. “This is the worst,” Clementine said, sadly. “Yeah, it doesn’t make any sense,” agreed Harmony. “None of the books in the library are unsuitable or inappropriate.” I nodded, mind wandering. Library closing down… Books being taken out… Our school is becoming more strict, apart from electives and clubs… Clubs! “Wait…” I turned to them. “I have an idea that you are going to like…”
