Destiny calls everyone...

Chatterbox: Inkwell

Destiny calls everyone...

Destiny calls everyone... Especially if your name IS Destiny

I was diving under the waves again. Into the salty sea, down, down, and open my eyes.

Slightly blurred, though the world now was, everything seemed to have a sparkle to it with the sunlight dancing underwater. Shoals of fish swish by me, my hair floating above my head in a black cloud. I let out some bubbles, and watch them rise to the surface. Then I swim forward, stirring up the sand behind me. The water is such a nice color (almost turquoise) and it was so warm. I swim up to yet another shell, pick it up, then kick to the surface to look at it closer. The waves gently bob around me as I suck in a breath, kicking my legs to keep me afloat. The shell was nothing special, just a broken oyster shell. I toss it behind me and dive back under.

Something catches my eye. It shimmers, and sparkles, and yet I feel wary. What should I do?

That was really well-written. I loved the intricate description of the water.

The shimmering, unknown object catches my eye and I see its bright sparkle, almost a glow, at the bottom.

I rise to the surface, taking one last gulp of air. Then, I dive back down, kicking my legs behind me. The water gets colder as I go deeper, but I keep swimming.

Down here, the ocean looks magical. The sun gives it a sparkle, and the waves veil it in ways that almost make the water seem like satin. The seaweed dances in  the water, and the shoals of colorful fish glide around me.

The darkness of the water grows deeper as I go, but the object still shimmers brightly. I want to turn back, but the shine is too mesmerizing.

I reach out and grab it to see…

I decide to reach out and grab the object. When my fingers touch it, the thing feels smooth and round. Clutching it in my hand, I rise again to the surface, were I open my hand. There in my palm was a pearl. It caught the light strangely, shining as though it was a jeweled rock, not a pearl. It seemed to be golden, and yet see through. How weird. And it hadn't been in a shell either! It was almost like someone had dropped it in the ocean.

What should I do with the strange pearl?

I look closer, admiring the pearl in my palm. It’s smooth and beautiful, golden and translucent. It’s something I have never laid eyes on before. I curl my hand into a fist and kick up towards the surface, reaching my arms out to propel myself. I gasp for air when I reach the surface, taking in labored breaths, and gaze at the pearl in my hand. It’s an odd object, unusual and beautiful. I swim towards the shore, satisfied with my find. But I can’t shake the feeling that there is more to this pearl than how it seems… Shall I take it home?

I probably should switch to 'you'... oops :/

You decide to keep it. You turn, and swim back to shore with your treasure. Reaching the beach, you stumble onto the white sands and up the slight incline, to were a group of people were huddled. There was jumbled conversation as the other people showed off what they found. You were part of a group of beach finders, as they called themselves. At least twice a week, everyone met up on this beach to see who could find the best thing.

"And I found ANOTHER pearl," a snobby voice proclaimed. Melody. Melody was the most smug, boastful, and rich kid on the island. And she constantly picked on anyone who wasn't part of her 'gang.'

You smirk, glancing at your closed fist as you brush your dripping hair out of your face. You bet Melody never found a pearl like this. But as you open your mouth to call out what you found, you hesitate. Should you really show everyone this strange pearl? What should you do?

You decide not to show Melody the pearl. After all, she'd probably just try and steal it, or do something despicable out of jealousy.

"That's probably true," you say, cleverly faking a sad sigh.

Melody laughs haughtily but gives you a look mingled with something like...confusion. She knows something's amiss, but does she know what? Your heartbeat quickens slightly, and your palms sweat profusely as the bully cocks her head to the side.

"Did you find something?" she asks, narrowing her eyes.

You scoff and shake your head. "If I did, I wouldn't tell you."

"Oh, sweetheart, did you find a piece of rock? I mean, it's so fitting that you found one, since you're just as dense as a rock!" Melody laughs cruelly, her minions cackling behind her as she mocks you.

Your face reddens and you clench your fists, but you're careful not to drop the pearl. What do you do?

“Well, at least I don’t waste my time boasting about something as commonplace as a pearl,” you retort. Melody rolls her eyes. “At least I found something,” she replies with a laugh.

You glare and turn away. I suppose the best course of action is to go home. You start walking away, still fuming from that interaction with Melody.

“Melody has never found a pearl like this,” you murmur with a slight smile. “But… she knows something’s amiss. Could she know what’s up? Hopefully, nothing about the pearl itself.”

Still, this pearl gives you this odd feeling, both unnerves you and fascinates you.

You walk away from Melody and her meanness, pondering the pearl. You are so focused on your thoughts that you walk straight into someone.

"Woah, there, Dess!"

You look up to see your best friend, Liam. He had shaggy brown hair, a crooked smile, bright blue eyes, and round glasses. He had the nerdiest brain, was a complete jokster and he usually had a baseball cap on backwards. He was taller than you, and though he didn't join in the beach search, he usually came to the beach the same day.

"Hey, Liam," you smile, and you self conciously put your hand behind you back.

"Find anything? Liiike... a fishing net to trap Disharmony?" Liam grinned, using his name for Melody.

"Unfortunely, no," you admitted, "But..." you trail off. Should you show Liam, your most trusted friend, this magical pearl?

This is literally so fun.

~~~
Your silence speaks for itself.
"Everything okay? Disharmony giving you a hard time?" Liam asks, quirking an eyebrow at your silence.
"I have something to show you later. It's...big. Are you heading home now?" You bite your lip in nervousness and excitement.
"Yeah, I was just about to," he replies. "Are you sure you're ok?"
His kindness touches you. "I'm fine, thanks for worrying, Lee. Can you come over before dinner?"
"Sure." He flashes you a bright-toothed smile.
You part ways.
Part of you wonders whether showing Liam is the right decision, but you shake your head and carry on. Liam is your closest friend. He...can be trusted, right? You certainly hope he can.
You clutch the pearl to your chest as you climb into your car. You're technically not allowed to drive on your own, but as you're almost sixteen (and undeniably close to your home), you should be fine.
As you sit down, you unclench your hand and gaze, entranced, by the beautifully glistening object in your palm. You've never seen anything like it. You take a deep breath, and, putting the car in reverse, back out of your parking spot and begin the short drive home.
You decide to show him. "Liam," you start. "Can I trust you with this? Will you make sure to keep it a secret?" Liam nods, with a puzzled expression. "Of course, if it's important to you."
You slowly unfurl your palm to reveal the pearl. "This is it," you say quietly. Liam's eyes widen. "I've never a pearl like this before..." He marvels. His eyes gleam at the sight of the pearl.
You instinctively tuck it in your pocket. "So, what kind of pearl do you think it is?" You ask. Liam shrugs. "I... don't know. I've seen golden pearls before, but never seen one like this; and have never heard of one like it. It honestly freaks me out a little."
He laughs, but you ponder those words and think about his earlier reaction to the pearl.
