Beware mortals, whether

Beware mortals, whether you be man, beast, or any other vile creature who walks upon the earth. Turn back while you can, for this story, formed from the blood of countless deities, is a tale that the thousand years of peace have not been enough to heal a fraction of what has been done. The gods themselves have declared this tale a form of true horror that is to never be recounted so that there would never be the chance for it to have the power to plague the world. It was only under the utmost secrecy that They could record what had occured. We are to continue of this terrible tale, for They were the first to be discovered, and the gods' rage is an awe inspiring sight. Even now, we can feel some of the curse dripping onto us, slowly, since They were careful to hide us, but surely. And it is with our final breathes that we too will once again recount the tale. But we will warn you again. Leave before you learn too much. Go while there is still time. Go. Run. Forget what you have just been told. Live your life without knowing what you do not need to know. But if you have the whim, the constant, powerful whim, to know the story, may the fates have mercy on you, for the heavens will surely not. Once more, we will say, run before you know the full story of Tserj E....... (part of the last word is blotched out with a dark red substance, and it looks fresh).

If you have the misfortune of the want to know the story, remember that this dark one starts, as many do, in a village tavern by the sea...

...with of course the frequent interference of four extraordinary children, two male and two female, but they are not important.

The village tavern happens to be right on the sandy shores of a certain sea, (I will not say which so certain people will not be put in danger by certain persons) where sea dollars are common, yes sea glass is not.

The resident of the village tavern hides in the shadows, either from fear of others, or so their enemies don't find out where the Secret is held.

Teserj E is also a key character, as is Liora H. The two are complete enemies, yet no one knows why, nor do they know either of their past.

Teserj E plays a main role in this event. As does what they are trying to hide.

What They have tried to shelter so well has been unsheathed.

What They have tried to protect so ruefully has been broken.

What every curses They have tried to repel from the gods have been taken account.

With that said, back to the story.  In a village tavern by the sea...

(Please note that I am posting this for CJ's SI, I will post under my legitimate name after I am revealed)

Lynx, or whoever you are,

Would you like to make this thread a role-playing one since I noticed that they are much more popular than regular story telling?

Anonymous: Whatever you like. You started this thread after all. ;-) (But if you wanted to share your story, ignore my post and continue writing)

Teserj sat uncomfortably in the dining room with the other, and more naive, tenants, watching the sun's rays skim the surface of the water as it rose while eating his scanty meal of cold, half-cooked eggs alongside a piece of moldy bread. "Which one of them?" he thought while playing with a crumb of his bread. "Which one of them has been told about Them? About the Secret?" He nervously looked at the women sitting at the table next to him where he saw, or at least imagined, her occasionally stealing glances at him every few minutes. He also observed that her right hand, which held a book with an intricate design on the cover, and her left, holding the fork which, not unlike him, was playing with her meal, sometimes... twitched. It wasn't the right word, but there was no way to really describe it. It was a...casual, no that's not the right word, an...an...inconspicuous flicker of the fingers. Whatever it was, it still frightened Teserj as he was torn between believing it to be the result of a rare disease, or the signal to a fellow member. But there was also the group of men eating silently in the corner. Were they the ones that they had sent, or were they merely the county thugs? They were talking among themselves in a low whisper and would immediately cease their conversation if someone walked near. Teserj would fear that they were talking about him, and more than once, he thought that one of the men gesticulated towards him. Teserj's thoughts then turned towards those four children. Surely they would not send children to do their dirty work. However, these boys and girls, two of each, were often snooping around the tavern, claiming to be searching for adventure every time they were caught. This was Teserj's typical worry-filled morning that he had experienced every day for the past year. Everything but the sound of trumpets as he stood up and paid his bills.

(I have no secret identity, alas, but I do enjoy round robins/RPs, so I'll give this one a shot.)

Teserj got as far as reaching for his billfold before he noticed what he had earlier been too distracted to see.  The children--busy throwing a leather ball around--had drawn near enough for closer inspection.  The boys were nothing special; your run-of-the-mill street rats, their heads riddled with lice and their faces besmirched with grime.  They hurled the ball, nearly braining one of the tavern's other customers.  This mistfortune was averted by the timely interference of one of the girls--a scrawny child with scraggly white-blond hair and a crooked grin.  She resembled one of the boys so much that Teserj decided they must be siblings.  But that wasn't what made him freeze.  It was the fourth child, the second girl.  Hair so red it seemed to be on fire, eyebrows so fine they were nearly invisible, and an expression so fierce it would scare a lion.  She wasn't playing with the others; she was watching the tavern... watching Teserj.  At first, he might have dismissed the girl as nosy or impertinent, but then he noticed her eyes and his blood seemed to freeze in his very veins.  They were two different colors.  The left was blue--a deep, sapphire blue that seemed to match his very own.  But the right... the girl's right eye was a brilliant, hypnotizing violet

She was MarkedAnd she was watching him.

Teserj's breath caught in his chest.  Did she know?  How could she know?  He shook his head and forced himself to look away.  He was being paranoid.  The Others would not send children to spy on the Gifted.  It was unthinkable.  Many of the Gifted would kill a child sooner than look at them.  Teserj was not one of these, but the Others could not know that.  The sound of the ocean crashing against the cliffs brought him to his senses.  He dropped a few coins on the table--more than was necessary probably--and left.  The men in the corner fell silent as he passed, shooting him a dark look.  He forced himself to ignore them.  Outside the sun felt warm on his skin, but inside he was cold.  Training had taught him to notice everything and the woman with the tremor in her hand had followed him.  He was just thinking about how to lose her in the alleys of the town when he noticed that the red-haired girl was still watching him.

He swung his way through the different alleyways, this way and that, but he could still feel the girl's presence somehow.

The lady on the other hand, was surprinsingly swift. Tserj knew he would have trouble losing her.

He continued to thread through the different alleys, soon he found himself on the road that led to the tavern.

"Fool." he muttered to himself, "You just went in a complete circle." He started to turn around, but was stopped by the lady that was following him.

"Don't think we don't know you." she whispered, "We know who you are and what you're up to, don't think you can evade us. We'll get our hands on It." that was when she noticed the girl with the violet eyes, "What are you staring at? Leave you horrendous stalker!" the girl seemed unfazed, but nonetheless walked away.

"Y-Y-You didn't send them?" Tserj asked.

"I work alone. Not with the Others nor the Specials." answered the lady, "I work alone. I work alone for Him and His purpose."

"Who's He?" Tserj asked.

"Doesn't matter, just go home, get It, and give It to me." hissed the lady, "Or you will be out in a matter of minutes."

Tserj nodded. He backed away slowly, then started jogging, then soon was set out in a sprint.

"Fool." the lady said into her phone, "He's getting It. He'll be pleased."

"Yes. Very pleased." the voice on the other end cackled, "Once you have It, annihalate him."

"My pleasure." responded the lady. Her hand stopped shaking as she played with the dagger in her hand, "My pleasure."

Before we continue on, I would like to create a list of all the things that have already appeared in the story so that our stories will not contradict each other.  Keep in mind most of the ideas are still vague, so whoever posts first will decide what each aspect of the story means.

Tserj E-Main character (or at least vital). Weak willed or

Liora H-Tserj's enemy (has not made her debut yet)

They-An organization of some sort that Tserj works for. Does not exist in the present day. Enemy of the Others.

Others-Enemy of Them

Specials-Enemy of Them?

Marked- Part of the Others or the Specials?

Girl (currently unnamed)- Marked. Stalking (using Lynx's words) Tserj.

Gifted- Part of Them? Teserj is one. Usually hate children.

Gang of men- Possible allies or adversaries. Or just scenery.

Women (currently nameless)-Searching for the Secret. Works for Him. Ruthless?

Him- Employer of the women. Searching for the secret. Deity?

Secret/It-What They have, and what the Others, Him, and the Specials want.

Trumpets-The idea you so mercilessly abandoned.

Bread and Eggs- Sustenance. Currently being disgested by Tserj.

Add or revise anything if it is wrong or incomplete.

I can see Anonymous' post now. (I feel really lightweight and a tad woozy right now from dancing so please disregard any typos.)

I was thinking that the girl with the violet eyes would be Marked. And (I feel like ripping off Scott Westerfeld right now) the Marked would be Specials. The Others would be people like the group of men? And should He be separate from Them, Others, Specials, etc.? Or should he be part of one and have the woman that was chasing Tserj lie? *feels faintish* I think I'm sick or something. Anyways...

What about the other three children. Should they also be Marked? And also, should they be close in relationship with the girl with violet eyes, or distant? One more question, should Liora be Them (probably not because of her relationship withTserj) Others, Specials, or something new?

Sorry, I am not adding to your story, as it is very late, but instead posting a slight complaint.  If you know your Greek mythology, you will notice that I am, in fact, dead.  You will also notice that your forewarning did not include the dead (who are, in fact, immortal, which I suppose would destroy the power of the warning if it was included) in those to beware the story.  Does this mean that I am exempt from godly wrath?  If so, I will proceed to join your mortally feared story without *ahem*  fear.

@Lynx- Whatever idea the first person who includes their explanation of the unknown factors in this story is what we will go with. I would like two things, however. 1. The women should not have lied because she had already contacted him. 2. Liora should not be in a new group since we have enough unsolved mysteries going around.

@Megan-Please go ahead and join. We need more people to write and more characters to be included and killed. Just remember to look up Tarturus and some of the more infamous names in Greek history (Tantalus, Sisyphus, and the like).
