Guess what? I

Guess what? I auditioned for The Little Mermaid and I made the cast! I am only a very small part: a Sea Creature/Lagoon Animal but I am still very happy that I made it!!! I will post about all of my rehearsals and shows! The shows are all the way in November!!!

Awesome! Congratulations! That's always a great feeling, regardless of what the part actually is.

Out of curiosity, is it the Disney/Broadway version of TLM, or a different adaption?

I'm going to be auditioning for a part in The Little Mermaid musical that my school is putting on later this year. I don't know which part to audition for, though. Suggestions, anyone? I sing alto but can do soprano.

If it's a Broadway style adaptation, Ursula is the biggest alto part.  At least I think she's an alto.  I'm not that good at judging.  She doesn't go that high, though, so I think I'm right in assuming she's an alto.  Scuttle is a guy role, but I'm an alto and I'm best at singing as him because he's not that low.  Since it's a guy role, I wouldn't go after it unless there aren't that many guys in your drama club or your drama club has a history of giving out roles to people of different genders than the roles are.

You guys are so lucky!  I <3 The Little Mermaid.  The one downside to my singing voice is I'll never be able to play her.  I literally choke on high notes.  I start coughing and everything.  My voice is better suited to alto/ high-to-mid tenor range.  I'm good at singing the Beatles, though!  It's really weird b/c my speaking voice isn't that low.  Sorry, I'm babbling.  I'm so tired...

I haven't actually had anyone tell me what kind of singing voice I had for a long time. Not since like fourth grade, really. But I am forgetting that I was in choir in seventh grade and got away with Soprano. It worked, too. So who knows? (Does anyone know how you tell?)

To be perfectly honest, (which I am not often, about my obsessions anyway, but you guys have inspired me) I have been obsessed with The Little Mermaid, particularly Ariel, paricularly the song Part of Your World which I know nearly all the lyrics to and yeah. She was always my favorite Disney Princess. I was exstatic (sp?) when I heard they were going to do it. So I don't think I'll be able to resist trying for Ariel :/

If you can sing both alto and soprano parts without straining much in either direction, you're probably a mezzo. If you want to be more precise, compare your range to average ranges for the various voice typs (alto/mezzo/soprano). A quick google search is all you need for that, really.

And try for the part you want! It's ultimately your decision, so even if it's not the role I would want (Ursula all the way xD), you should choose based on what you would most like to do. Although, if auditions are set up such that you audition for all roles in one go (as opposed to auditioning for each character individually), make sure the director(s) know that you're willing to play any part, but have a preference for Ariel.

Do you know what song you're singing for them yet?

Haha well the auditions aren't for a while yet (I'm surprised they even decided on the play already) but I was thinking May it Be is a nice one :)

Ya you should try of for whatever part you want. I tried out for any part because I tried out witn a big theater company so... I was pretty much up for any role.

Ursula's an alto, yes. With crazy belting.

As far as singing high notes goes, it is possible to increase your range, if you practice and are willing to do it slowly and without straining. Sing lots of scales and go up a tiny bit (like, a half-step) every once in a while, basically.

Don't worry. I couldn't sing soprano if my life depended on it. I am a true alto.

I sang You'll Be in My Heart from Tarzan. It was the pop version. I don't know which part would be good. Maybe Ursula???

@Emily L.

I have a really bad Ariel obsession.  I have an Ariel pillow, figurine, doll, pen, every Little Mermaid movie.  It's really bad.

Yeah, I'd probably go for Ursula, too, given the chance.
