Chatterbox: Pudding's Place

Instruments!

Instruments!

So. I know that many of the Chatterboxers are in a band/orchestra and play one or more instruments. Out of curiosity, I create a thread asking my fellow CB'ers what instrument(s) they play. Apparently you have clicked on this thread because you are curious to know what I am saying about instruments. Instead, you find that I am asking what you have to say about instruments.

But ANYWAY. . . .

The answer for me: I play saxophone in my school band (alto). For those who are curious, I tried to play bari (baritone) sax once and I was AWFUL. So I play alto. I have never tried to play tenor sax.

I also play piano. I took lessons for about a year. Then I quit, because I hate method books. Now I am self-taught. And I can play WHATEVER I WANT :DDDDDDD

And I started playing guitar about . . . two months ago. So yeah . . .

- = BONUS ROUND: BAND JOKES! = -

Q: How do you find a trombone player on a playground?

A: He can't swing and always complains about the slide.

Q: How do you get two oboes in tune?

A: Shoot one.

Q: What's the difference between a clarinet and a mouse?

A: You can't hear a mouse squeak over the entire band.

Q: How many flutists does it take to change a lightbulb?

A: Six --
One to get the chair to stand on, one to stand on the chair and actually
screw it in, one to pull the chair out from under her, and three more
to complain about how much better they could have done it.

Q: Four flutists drive a mini-van off of a cliff.  What is the tragedy?

A: You can easily fit eight flutists in a mini-van.

Q: Why is the French horn a divine instrument?

A: Because a man blows in it, but only God knows what comes out of it.

Observe the distinct lack of saxophone jokes because saxophones are amazing.

I've been playing the flute for four full years and I'm starting my fifth. I play in band and my church's orchestra. I've played at Solo and Ensemble and received a first. That's about it with my musical career.

My friend and I played a duet at Solo and Ensemble and earned Superior . . . is Superior the same as first?

Best combo ever: Tuba + Alto Saxophone

I guess it is the same, if superior is the highest you can receive.

I did say on the Scissor Problem thread, I play guitar.

I play the clarinet in my school band.  I have tried teaching myself guitar but it hasn't worked out well because I don't have a real good guitar.  My guitar's a kiddie acoustic guitar and it doesn't want to tune.  This guy's been trying to help me by giving me websites, but I need a better guitar.  I know basic piano just from the music theory we learned in middle school.  I can tell the sound of different drums apart, so I could probably play drums.

So, overall, I can play clarinet and kind of play a ton more instruments.

@Zach

It's typically easier to transition from alto to tenor because they're closer in size.  My friend started on the alto, but when we got to high school she switched to tenor and she loved it.

Oh, I've played clarinet for five years.  I play in the school band and wind ensemble and I've played in a jazz band.  I'm going to try out for my school's jazz band this year.

To prepare everyone, a fellow orchestra member once called me a 'string instrument junkie'.

Violin- I took lessons for about 6 months in kindergarten and then quit because I moved schools.  I can play the violin, although I don't like to 'cause it hurts my ears.

Guitar- I started in 3rd grade and can play most songs that don't have really weird chords.  I don't really do classical guitar.

Viola- My main instrument, I started in 3rd grade and it kind of snowballed from there.  I've been first chair All County two years in a row and got a perfect NYSSMA score two years in a row.

Bass- started upright in fourth grade, started electric this year.  I'm a beginner.

I can also play the cello in theory and I sing.

I have played the piano and the violin, and quit both. I kind of want to try guitar, but I don't know if I will.

Piano, which is boring and typical.

Guitar, which everyone else seems to play.

Ukelele, and I am happy to say, I am the only person I know who can play it!

I can also sing fairly well, although with singing, it is always hard to tell what is good and what is bad. I happen to think Justin Beiber is a bad singer, yet people love him. Go figure.

Okay, new queston:

Anybody else WRITE music?

I know Joe does because he said so on his Scissor Problem thread. I also write music, though the Admin won't let me post my info right now. What about you guys?

Zach, we've decided that we'll post the url directly to one or a few of your compositions without leading others right to the whole site. So can you send us a direct address to the mp file? I'm not sure if I'm saying this right, but I hope you get what I mean. I'm the least computer/internet literate of the Admins.

At my music teacher's we have to write music using stuff we're learning, so I've written some stuff, the most recent being the great "Stravinsky's old movie ending where everybody dies" for two tubas and a viola.

Thank you, Admin!

Here are some URLs directly to three of my songs that may or may not work.

I used to a while back, but I stopped because I wrote lyrics and had no instrument back then to play the melody on.  I have writiten a few things on clarinet.  In theory, I know how to make big arrangements of songs for the whole band, but I've never actually tried it.

@Everrine

I also sing.  Not in a chorus anymore, but just all the time.  I hate my head voice, though, so I normally stick to songs originally by male artists.

I've put together a few chords and lyrics with the guitar and ukulele, but nothing very complex.

I play cello. And no offense to any of y'all but the bassists in my orchestra are EXTREMELY stuck up because one of them is Stone, one of them is a team Appalachia kid, and one of them is popular. The violinists are, for the most part, snobby. The violists are funny.

I love the cello! But I play violin.
