School Plays

Has anyone participated in a school play? If so, what role did you play and what play was it? I started last year in fifth grade when I tried out for the Sound of Music for our spring play. I wasn't called back and I didn't get a part, but it was a LOT of fun. I was in the chorus, being a nun and a party person. I'm not really sure what our spring musical will be this year, but I definitely plan on trying out!

I was in a school play in first grade. I was the narrator. Oh and in the one in second grade I was some Egyptian queen dancing on the side...

We have a theater group at school. I'm interested in doing theater but (1) I don't like the plays that do and (2) I want to do plays in English. I would really love to be in a musical, too.

That's nice that your school has a theater group! Our school has a music elective last semester, but my music teacher is considering on doing a drama/acting elective this semester.

In 5th grade, I was a villager in the chorus for an Anansi play. But last year in 6th grade, I got a solo where I hula hooped while playing Yankee Doodle Boy on my flute for a George M. Cohan play. It was great :)

We have a drama club at our school, where kids can go try out to be in it. I was considering auditioning-- until I foud out the subject. Do you know what it was? The Little Mermaid. I mean, seriously? We're in seventh grade!

I did The Little Mermaid last year in seventh grade and had a blast ;) Don't think it beneath you, there are some great parts. (Admittedly not so much if you're in the chorus, but I was an Flotsam, the eel, and had tons of fun!) :) That wasn't at a school though, it was a community theater.

I took two theater camps.

The first one was really innovative. It was a mish-mash of musical songs set within a framework we actually invented, so it was really a creative process. I was on the young side then and was only in the chorus, but I really enjoyed it.

The second time, I was thirteen, and everyone else in the class was in junior high. What was the play we did? The Lorax. The Lorax. By Dr. Seuss. IT'S NOT EVEN A PLAY, IT'S A CHILDREN'S PICTURE BOOK!!!! I threw a massive fit over that when it was over, and even though I played the title character (yes, I was the Lorax, though without the flamboyant mustache, sadly), it seemed like a waste of time. We were not challanged and the other kids had waaaay too much time to mess around. Bad things happened then that I won't repeat. The teacher was one of those political types and not at all a hard-nosed director, and tried to make the Lorax paralell the current human situation, but I could think of a half-dozen better play/story ideas to show that then Dr. Seuss.

I really want to be in a Shakespeare play sometime, and play Goneril or Regan in King Lear. I've always wanted to play a villain! As the saying goes, "they get all the best parts."

Your theater disaster sounds like the treble choir at my school...I'm not going to elaborate in this post. It was too much to tell now.

In fourth grade (I'm in sixth now), I was the play equivalent of an extra in the musical Charleston!, but I still had fun.

You guys are lucky! Where I live, there is no school theater. I do it outside of school.

@S.E.- Actually, I'd love to do theater outside of school. I don't really like the idea of putting on a play in front of ALL my classmates.

@Nina:

I'm doing The Sound of Music with Children's Theater of Wilmington, and it was for sixth grade and up. But the director had seen me as Avery in Charrlotte's Web, so she invited me.  I am 1-7 years younger than everybody, so guess what? I was cast as Gretl. I was a little dissapointed at first. I really wanted Brigetta. But than I found out this was how many lines each child had (not including singing):

Liesl:  a lot!

Brigetta: 32

Gretl: 14

Marta: 10

Curt: 8

Loisa:8

Fredric:5

And out of all of the kids, I probably do the most acting.

That's cool and you're lucky that you were in the cast as one of the children. Some of the people in our production weren't even good singers. Are you Gretl just because you are small, not because of your age? Because our production was all about the size, and age kind of didn't matter. Did you do your performances yet?

@Nina

My performances are in January, and I was cast as Gretl because, well this was the conversation at my audition (quotes are theater director):

"So, Sarah, what part would you like?"

I really want Brigetta.

"Why?"

She has a lot of cool lines, and she is my age. I like her the most.

"Could you sing for me? And do a monologue?"

S.E. sings and does a monologue.

"You have an amazing voice. I really think you are going to be a kid. I invited you because you are the perfect size for Gretl. Because you are in fifth grade, I'm probably casting you as Gretl because there are older kids that want that role."

So, that's it.
