Percy Jackson: The

Chatterbox: Pudding's Place

Percy Jackson: The

Percy Jackson: The Sea of Monsters

I know BHR did a thread on this long ago when the film actually came out, but because I'm slow and only watch movies on DVD, I'm going to rehash this again, since I saw it last night.

First of all, my biggest issue with it was how Percy seemed to keep brooding so much on how neglected he felt. I know that in the book he did have his insecurity, but in the movie it just felt forced. And I really wish they didn't take out the part with Annabeth and Percy with the Sirens, especially when they pointed out their respective weaknesses then. It would have tied in Percy's not-so-great-after-all loyalty with the part in the beginning when he saved the other half-blood on that climbing device, thus losing to Clarisse.

I really liked Clarisse. Aside from the fact that she was slightly too pretty, looked a little too old, and her dislike of Percy was mainly reserved to being catty to him, she was really quite dead on. And I loved her costume.

I liked Tyson, too, aside from the sprayable Mist (though I guess, for those that didn't read the book, the fact that there is such a thing as Mist had to be pointed out). He seemed almost too stupid, too, but he was still a really fun character.

I didn't care for Luke's bit in this, though. It never seemed like he had a chance of getting ahead of the others, since Percy managed to brig-break with such ease. I wish Luke was as impressive as he was in the book. In the book he was a great villain, but he's a little dull in the films. And Silena should totally not have joined him yet! She's going to be important, and she isn't even introduced properly!

I also didn't like how they raised Kronos and then just "killed" him again so easily. This is the Lord of Time! Father of the Olympians! And why does he have to sound like Darth Vader? And there seemed something too ordinary looking about the Fleece.

I loved Grover in this one, though. He gets all the great lines and the bit at the end when he dresses up as a Cyclops handmaiden is precious!

Thalia seemed pretty cool, though I imagined her looking different. Annabeth had too small a part in this movie, though. It seemed like she should have done a little more.

All in all, I liked the film a lot, though I wish they had included more of the episodes from the book. I hope they do Titan's Curse, though if they change it too much, I'm going to be very angry indeed.

Sorry for the very late review of this--you're probably all like "That's yesterday's news!" and "Girl, get with the times!" but with my slow library and not being allowed to go to movie theaters...I really don't have much of a choice! :)

I agree with everything you said! I definitely had mixed feelings about the movie, and I prefer the book.

Having Kronos come alive was a huge spoiler for my little brother. He had only read up to the second book.

Percy and Annabeth's relationship was a bit strange. Why do they have to hug if they have been apart for more that 30 secconds?

Also, why does Annabeth have perfect hair, when they clearly state that her hair is messy. But, you know, it's a movie.

I really liked Grover and Clarisse too!

I was amazed by the effects, but then, why does everything look so real, but then Kronos look like,I don't know, a bad cartoon.

I will also be sooo mad if the Titan's Curse is a failer. Uggg!

I don't know if you are allready doing this, but check out this page:

Yay! I'm glad you did like the movie. I did too. Too many people hate it for not being just like the book, and I understand that, but the movie as a separate thing was good. But you hit the nail on the head with all my peeves with the movie.

I agree about Percy feeling too neglected. That was over done. I think the Sirens would have tied it in well too! It would have helped the movie over all.

I liked Clarisse too! A lot! Her costume, her attitude, her skill. All of it was great! I agree that she was a little too pretty, but then again, that's Hollywood for you.

I liked Tyson, though I agree he was a little too stupid, and the spray on Mist annoyed me! I mean, the Mist was this powerful thing, and the fact they stuck it in a spray bottle like it was some acne cover type thing just annoyed me. Sorry, but it did.

I agree about Luke. The lines and the way they portray him is bad. I mean, you can tell he would be a fantastic Luke! But they way he's done in the movie isn't showing his potential. And Silena being on the ship alread DROVE ME NUTS! Just.. gah! That ruins everything for The Last Olympian!

OH MY GOSH KRONOS. No no no no and NO! That was just WRONG. He was raised WAY too easily, he was taken down WAY too easily, and it was just infuriating! I mean, come on, HE WAS A TITAN. That was ridiculous.

I loved Grover too! *Clarisse snaps picture* Grover: "Hey hey! Do NOT let that go viral!"

I thought Thalia was great! They did that part fairly true to the book, and she looked like how they described Thalia, and behaved like her. I also LOVED Little Thalia (or so I call her). She was great!

Hey, I watch "out of date" movies ALL the time, and give rants/reviews on them. But I'm glad at least someone else who likes the books likes the movie!

Luke was really awesome in The Lightning Thief, with his treachery and all. My dad (who saw the movies with me), said that he had a lot more screen panache than Logan Lerman (hello, LL has NONE and I wished he had kept his hair longer for the second film; sorry, I just have problems with this guy in general). And he could totally have made Luke Castellan the best villain since Voldemort, but his part had to be ruined by Hollywood! So sad...

Does anyone remember if Grover actually used crutches in the books? I couldn't recall; I was thinking that because of the Mist (the real one, that keeps humans from seeing bizarre things in general) kept everyone from telling he was a satyr, even with his funny gait. He wore them in the movie and I didn't know if that was also made up too.

I so so wish that they didn't make Annabeth and Percy "fall in love" this early on! So what if they're cast older than they're supposed to be? That doesn't mean they have to have a romance so soon (well, if you call hugging every ten minutes a romance)! And WHY WHY WHY DOESN'T ANNABETH EVER CALL PERCY SEAWEED BRAIN? It's so cute how she does that in the book, and kind of flirty, too, in her tomboyish way!!!

I agree, Everinne! Although, I didn't see it, my friends say that during the bull attack, Annabeth tripped over a rock, fell down, reached out her hand, and called out, " Percy!" I didn't like her in the movie at all. Plus, what's with Kronos rising and all?!? I liked Thalia a lot though.

Luke was fantastic in TLT! I loved him! To me, Luke in general is the best villian since Voldemort. Though he was a bit of a let down in SoM.

And I just got so mad with the Princess Andromeda. I mean, it was supposed to be a huge cruise ship with a big showdown between Percy and Luke, and seeing the size of a yacht drove me crazy. Stupid minor pet peeve, but it did drive me crazy.

I'm pretty sure Grover had crutches in the book. I could be wrong, but I think he did.

I GOT ANNOYED WITH THAT TOO! It was AT LEAST book 4 when anything sort of real came from it. I mean, I know they sort of implied it at the end of Titan's Curse, but it was Battle of the Labyrinth that it really started to take shape. I miss the Seaweed Brain too! I mean, anyone who has read PJO knows if you say "Seaweed Brain" it's more a joshing compliment! BUT IT WASN'T IN THE MOVIE AND I WAS SO SAD. Just.. gah.

Oh my gosh, the Princess Andromeda was horrible. And MINISCULE!!!! I expected it to look something like the Titanic or something--at least not like a cheap yacht! And the CGI on that one was pretty bad. I mean, couldn't they have made a scale model of it or something? It just completely did not do anything for the plot.

Yeah, Luke's an awesome villain. Too bad the people who haven't read the books don't know that. :(

Something was just off with Annabeth entirely. She somehow just got effaced by Clarisse, who was super intense and heroic like Annabeth is supposed to be! I was kind of sad because Annabeth is so strong as a character and the fact that she gets all romantic and not-all-that-useful is terrible. Where is her knife? Where is the baseball cap? I'm starting to hate Hollywood...

I really really hope the actors they pick for Bianca and Nico for Titan's Curse are all right. And I so hope they put Blackback in! He rocked. :)

OMG!!! I SOOOOO WANT TO SEE THIS!!! I noticed our library got this pretty fast, but I wasn't sure if we were allowed to watch it, but I see that it's really good!

All your positive reviews made me smile. :)

P.S. Grover does not have crutches in the book, rather, fake feet.

I KNOW! The Princess Adromeda was just a huge let down. I hope they fix it in following movies.

*cries for humanity* I know, it's pathetic. Luke awesome, just awesome, but the movies don't portray that, and I want to scream! I like the actor who plays him, cause I think he can play Luke well, but his over all portrayal is terrible. I blame movie writers.

There is, isn't there? I was glad she was blonde in this one, but I think I liked her better in the first movie. I like Alexandra Daddario as Annabeth, cause I thought at first she captured her attitude well. Heck, she's better than some of the other people who tried out. *coughmileycyruscough* But I've been looking for her knife and Yankees cap! They're her signature trademarks! I hate Hollywood too. I wish the authors had more influence in the movies.

I hope so too! Nico's going to be a bit difficult. But then again, so will Bianca. And I really liked Bianca, so I hope she's done well! AND BLACKJACK IS AWESOME! I hope he's in there too!

That's right! I knew it was something like that. Fake feet, not crutches.

Seriously, Miley Cyrus actually expected that she would play Annabeth??? Weird...(but then again, Miley is seriously weird)

Alexandra Daddario was really cool in the first one--I thought she really had the spunky Annabeth spirit (even without the blonde hair!) And Jake Abel is really good as Luke--or could be if he wasn't made to be so idioticly dull.

The only other thing I thought of that seemed kind of overdone was when Tyson comes back (hale and hearty once again) and Percy wastes a whole ten seconds in hugging him and calling him "brother" when KRONOS IS ABOUT TO RISE!!! And the Fleece needs saving!!!! There can be time for commiseration and apologies when everything's all safe. Not that it matters, of course, since Kronos was dispatched with such startling ease, but it wasn't that realistic.

Agreed, Miley Cyrus is weird.

I know! I wish Alexandra had kept that spunkiness just with the added blondness. I think her having to play up the romance, and the dislike of Tyson really took the edge off her. He is completely idoitically dull, and I cannot fathom why the makers did that. He is exactly how I pictured Luke, and had that attitude of him in the first, but what was it with Sea of Monsters? It just messed up all the characters.

TELL ME ABOUT IT. I got SO annoyed with that! Really, if Percy had just gone and grabbed the Fleece then, none of the following stuff would have happened. And Kronos being defeated like that just drove me nuts. Actually, I did't like Kronos that much in general. It reminded me too much of Hades-ish thing, and him being taken down like that didn't help.

Also, I thought what happened to Luke in the end was kind of dumb. It's like they're trying to carry out a trend. The trident thing in the first movie was cool, but Luke seemingly "about to die" thing being carried out in Sea of Monsters was a little overdone to me. Nothing really "happened" to Luke at the end of SoM in the book, other than the Party Ponies invading. (Btw, if they make Last Olympian, and the Party Ponies are not in it, I'm going to be SERIOUSLY ticked off.)

The worst part about these fantasy films is how physics does NOT apply! I mean, everyone in SoM either slammed into some incredibly hard object or fell to the ground from an incredibly high distance, and just got up with NO HARM DONE!! I mean, it's just too crazy; they all should have died several times over. Only Luke seemed to have anything slightly wrong have any possibilty of happening to him, which is so unfair, because he's the villain! He should have so much more panache as a villain like in the books--the actor could totally pull that off!--and he just doesn't.

Oh my gosh, I know. That always irks me. I mean, part of what adds to the intensity and good drama of the movie is when the heroes still feel and REACT to the injuries and obstacles. For pitty's sake, they're not invincible! The whole movie, I just kept thinking, "seriously dude, you should have just been rendered unconcious. That is not normal." They may be half bloods, but it's commonly noted PEOPLE DO DIE ON QUESTS. A LOT. It's kind of why they're dangerous. I agree about Luke, it's totally unfair! I consider Jake Abel the best actor in the whole movie, just lousy writing and script. *headdesk*

I'm still debating Alexandria Daddario and Leven Rambin for what I consider best actress. Leven was a pretty rockin' Clarisse, but I loved Alexandria in LT. Plus, I really want to see how Paloma will do for Thalia. I'm really curious to see how that will go.

Cappie thinks I need medication.

I know, you would think the demi-gods are entirely immortal instead of fallible half-humans. if they were so easy not to kill, what would be so dangerous about quests?!

Jake Abel rocks--I'm considering becoming a serious fangirl about the way he acts--but I don't think his part in the film warrents it.

I'm going with Leven being the better actress. She might not have been Clarisse as Rick Riordan wrote her, but she was a Clarisse, if that makes any sense. Like you still got a sense of what her general character was, even though it wasn't copied exactly from the book.

With Alexandria, you never got a grip on Annabeth's soul. I'm sure she's a great actress, but not quite as great as she coulc be. She did well enough in Lightning Thief, but there still felt something missing--heck, they couldn't even get her hair right. It's not as bad as Luke's messed-up part, but a close second. :(

I sure hope Paloma does Thalia decently. She's one of the most vivid characters in the books.

I know! It entirely throws off the excitement and intensity of the series. I mean, their fatal flaws, their battles, the deaths, everything added to an INCREDIBLE plot line, but the movies are failing terribly in that area!

Ditto that! I'm considering it too. But agreed about this film. We can hope for the next, cause that will be really cruciale in story, with him falling off the cliff and all.

I totally get what you're saying! That's exactly how I felt about her! Looks aside, cause she didn't look like a terrible Clarrise, just different, she totally nailed the punk Clarisse attitude! I LOVED her on the CSS Birmingham, cause she totally mastered the whole yelling orders thing. Then her reaction when she saw Percy? Perfect, just awesome!

I know! She came close in LT, but wasn't quite there. If the writers wrote her piece better, she'd probably do fine. It's sad.

I know! I hope so too! I personally loved tiny Thalia (or so I've started calling her) in Sea of Monsters. I gotta give the kid credit, she did great. And so far, Paloma seemed to do Thalia well in the brief two minutes she got. *fingers crossed*

I've got to say, I loved the whole "It's a small world after all" thing! I literally started cracking up!
