Chatterbox: Pudding's Place

A.B.S.U.R.D, Part

A.B.S.U.R.D, Part II

...When we last saw our friends, Savvy, Nora, Carolion, Horse Spirit Girl, and Joss, the nothingness had fallen away under their feet, and Brookiera had vanished. What no one yet guessed was that among them, not only was there a Best Caretaker, but there was also a Murderer. This Murderer had arranged for the disappearances of the other CBers, caused all the misfortunes of the troop, and was the voice in the cave. The Murderer's intentions were to steal the children, lock them up, and hypnotize them to do her every command.  But I am going off topic. Back to the story.

Thud!  A soft, velvety carpet greeted the CBers' feet. A baby wailed, and the rest took up the cry. "Hush!" Horse Spirit Girl whispered. Carolion and Nora stood up and looked around. It could be described as nothing other than a palace. It had high, carved marble walls, chandeliers on the mosiac tiled ceiling, and the whole room had a formal and decorated appearance. There were rows and rows of fancy tables, clothed gold tablecloths, with chairs of such polished wood and soft cushions that they might as well have been thrones. The girls were stunned, they couldn't speak. They gawked and gaped at all the finery, turning around and around, taking it all in.

The infants had been forgotten in the splendour, and when sanity finally fluttered down and entered the girls' brains, and made them remember, the babies were--you guessed it--gone. "Uh-oh!" Savvy cried, frantically searching the room. "They could be anywhere in this horrid room! Look at all the tables!"

"Split up and search under the tables!" Joss yelled. Everyone began to dive under the tables, throwing dishes, tablecloths, and organization behind their backs and disregarding all but the missing babes. Presently they found one, then another, and another, 'til all were found and snuggled happily in their mistresses' arms. It was then that they looked up.

They beheld broken glasses and vases, ripped tablecoths, overturned furniture, and on top of everything flowers from the vases were scattered. The girls glanced at each other, frightened. How in the world were they going to clear all that? At that beautifully opportune moment, footsteps were heard and a previously unknown door creaked open.

There was a clatter, as though someone had fainted. With their hearts beating furiously in their chests, the CBers rushed forward. It was a thin girl, dressed in a maids' uniform, who looked to be only about thirteen. A gold bracelet on her wrist spelled Joan. The girls looked at each other, aghast. Would this little slip of a girl have to clean up the whole mess in the room by herself? Obviously that could not happen. They made up their minds to help all they could, and chose Savvy to wake the girl up.

Before anyone could do anything, however, the girl's eyelids fluttered open, revealing the bluest eyes they had ever seen, and she screamed.
