Poetry Contest

Poetry Contest

Well, we haven't had one of these in a while, have we? Time for a new one, I say! Welcome, resident poets!

The rules are pretty simple. I am the first judge. I will give you a theme, and you must write a poem relating to the theme. Be creative with your interpretations! I will then judge the entries by a set date, and the winner will then be the next judge, and set the next theme. And so on, and so forth.

The first theme will be... *dramatic drumroll*

Stars! Whether you chose to write about the kind of stars you wish on, or the kind that take the stage, I will be eagerly awaiting your sparkly, shiny, beautiful poems. Have them in by... Saturday, March 18. Two weeks. Sound fair?

I hope to see your poems soon!

Kinda choppy but we're going with it.

~

Unknown

When shall I find you again?

For I would cross mountains

While you span the incessant deep

And you would be a messenger

Upon the rolling hills

One flung by wind

One tossed by waves

One scattered o’er the ‘Side

So far the reaches of our destinies

So skewed our paths of life

Find one or the other

A few or none through

Murky is the violet light before us

The shifting vapors of the unknown

If fate entwined our winding roads

And bound our ways perhaps

‘Twill one day so again

One day

us humans are so tied to the past

what a black and inky slimy thing it is

misremembering it as something golden .

us humans are tied the present now

full of vibrant colours we thinkll

never change or fade. but they do.

when will us humans ever think about the future?

truly, not just whatll i eat tomorrow

when is the rent due, what will my family look like in ten years

more like what if gravity stops tomorrow

what if earth disappears and then were all part of space

theres nothing there for any of us.

We did.

We are.

But when will we?

Ahh I’m sorry this is kind of late, I wanted to write out a response to everyone’s poem. Firstly, I’d just like to say that I wasn’t expecting so many amazing poems, which made my job a lot harder :p But I’m so glad that you all decided to submit your poems here and since they were all so good, I had to see which ones best connected to the theme. Here are the results!

Honorable Mentions (In no order):

Cranberry: Honorable Mention: This concept is fascinating, the way that some small decisions now could lead to two completely different futures. I liked your use of the word ‘enemies’ and the implication that people can go from hate to love so easily <3

Indigo Feather: There is some really lovely imagery in here; I especially liked the ‘murky is the violet light before us/shifting vapors of the unknown’ line and the images that it invoked. For some reason this poem creates a distinct feeling of adventure and friendship, and I also liked the placement of the line breaks. This was wonderful, thank you :)

Scribbler: I really like the concept of this, and it’s something I think about often. I think that this poem does a really good job of getting that feeling of anticipation of the future across and the frustration of feeling like we as a people aren’t doing enough for our futures. I especially liked the lines ‘what a black and inky slimy thing/misremembering it as something golden’. Thank you!

Jaybells: Woah, this is very ominous and mysterious in a way that you are able to do so well. This whole poem just gives very cool Vibes and truly does capture the feeling that comes with the saying 'a storm on the horizon’. I especially liked the ‘of any true calling, or success-pursuing’ line. Thank you for writing :3

Hex: Oh gosh, the end of that was so intense and impactful. The whole poem being questioning and then the answer given bluntly at the end was very haunting and done very well. The mystical elements (such as the crystal ball) added to the air of mystery and I love the way that it flowed. Good job!

Third Place:

Serpentine: First of all, congrats on being able to post your poetry here, my first real poem was also posted on this thread and I was really nervous, so I can totally imagine why you might want to use a pen name. Secondly, this was really good! I loved the way that the two stanzas mirrored each other and certain details like the space suit made of cardboard and duct tape and the pattern of the quilt really added to the overall image in a way I thought was very well done. I think you should be very proud of yourself :)

Second Place (TIE):

WordSong: This was so interesting to read; it felt disjointed and angular in the best way, the line breaks really added to that sense of uncertainty. I really enjoyed those last few lines, along with the imagery of ‘orange-scented daydreams’, ‘lavender bubbles and hazelnut grass’, and ‘sonder scented apple trees’.

Spellbound: Ok, first of all, HAPPY 13TH BIRTHDAYYYY!! I totally get the anticipation and worry about turning into a teenager (I’m going to turn 15 in a few months and I still don’t feel like that much of a ‘teenager’ tbh), but in truth not much will change in your life- at least not right away. You managed to perfectly capture the uncertainty that comes with turning 13 and all the thoughts and worries that come with it. Your word choice was spot on and I really enjoyed this one! I hope you have a great bday and good luck with being 13 :)))

First Place:

Azalea: Oh wow, this really hit a personal note with me; the wondering about the future and growing up and the guilt that we all feel at the state of the world that we feel we can’t change. The lines ‘is it worth a sacrifice of the present, so candy-bright in this sheltered place/to martyr my teenage years trying to solve a problem i did not create?’ were brilliant and captured emotion so accurately. This was amazing, thank you for writing it!

Thank you to everyone who participated, and congrats to Azalea, who gets to judge next! Love you all <333

Thank you so much, Silver!!! All your compliments were so well-thought-out and I totally agree!

The next prompt will be ekphrasis, which if you don't know what that means (I didn't until recently, dw) it's basically writing that's about, describing, and/or inspired by visual art! So this prompt is a little different- just anytime you see a piece of art that inspires you, write a poem about it! It could even be art that you made. If possible, post/tell us the name of the art piece and who it's by.

Excited to see what y'all come up with!!

Wait.... I think I did this at school in 4th grade. It was poetry on an art peice, and I chose this painting of a girl... Huh. So that's what it's called. Thanks for the cool word!

That is such a cool word! Sounds a little like something I've been thinking about recently.

When will the due date be?

Does it have to be visual art like a drawing? Or could I base it off of a piece of writing or music or something?

submitted by @Azalea
(March 8, 2022 - 11:29 pm)

The due date will be March 22. (2 weeks is the usual, right?) Sorry about that!

Well, since ekphrasis is usually just visual art, I'm gonna say let's stick with that for this contest. But poetry inspired by writing/songs is super cool!

Can I join this round? My poem was late last time so I wanna work on this on.(what's the theme?)

submitted by Ayles C., age 11, Colorado
(March 9, 2022 - 5:51 pm)

Yes, anyone can join any round, no need to ask! The theme is ekphrasis (as I said above) AKA poems inspired by art! So no theme other than that. Good luck!
