UNKNOWN ARTISTS!

Are there artists/bands that you listen to that aren't as popular as today's pop singers? Tell us about them! Here's a few of mine:

-Cory Chisel and the Wandering Sons

Cory Chisel is probably the most unknown of all the artists I'll list. He's a country singer, but the Wandering Sons do classic rock. They have some really brilliant songs (I recommend "Born Again," "Curious Thing," "I've Been Accused," and "Seventeen" if you can find them), but they're stuck in tiny clubs trying to eke out a living.

-Regina Spektor

Actually, a surprising number of people know her, and I think I'll find a few of you who listen to her (Air is one of them). Regina Spektor is a pianist and vocalist who sings alternative/pop stuff - mostly, she can't be categorized. I recommend "Après Moi" by her, and any of the songs from her albums Far or What We Saw from the Cheap Seats. They're easy to find on YouTube.

-The Punch Brothers

The Punch Brothers are an all-strings bluegrass band with some truly amazing songs. The lead singer, Chris Thile, is also the host of a radio show called Prairie Home Companion, which is a combination of music and skits. He's an astounding singer with a falsetto that could match almost any female, but his range in general is incredibly powerful and he could sing almost any song. He's also one of the best mandolinists in history - I'm not saying this from a fan perspective, it's really true. I also recommend them for any violinists out there - most of their songs have some amazing (and incredibly freaking difficult) violin parts. Some of my favorites by them include "Magnet," "Don't Get Married Without Me," "Clara," "Icarus Smicarus," "Hundred Dollars," and "Squirrel of Possibility."

When posting your bands, please use your best judgement - Lindsey Stirling and Lorde are not little-known artists.

Does Melanie Martinez count?

I'd say she's on about the same level as Regina Spektor, so yes!

I might be a tad bit young for her songs but, I love them.

~Olafur Arnalds- (Instrumental)

Ok, so HAB knew about him, but no one else I've talked to has. He's a guy who makes amazing instrumental music (and gives out sheet music to his songs for free!!) I honestly love every single one of his songs. For Recommendations- 'Happiness Does Not Wait' 'Doria' 'Near Light' and 'Dalur'

~Tor Miller (Indie Pop)

I kind of only listen to him when I'm in the mood. But I like his music. My recommendations- 'Baby Blue' and 'Always'

~PVRIS (Alternative)

I think Nighthawk is also a fan of this band. They have a really unique sound and are releasing a new album this year. Recommendations- 'St. Patrick' 'Eyelids' and 'Empty'

~Janet Devlin (Folky-Pop??? I have no idea)

Her voice is so pretty and unique, and her songs are all awesome! She was on The X Factor, I believe. Recommendations- 'Whiskey Lullabies (or the Irish/Gaelic version- Suantraí Meisciúil)' 'Nothing Lost Something Found' and 'Delicate'

I don't know if Troye Sivan would count... but I like his music.

Did someone say PVRIS?? Yes I do indeed like their music. I also like these:

~Jason Walker~ Specifically Echo, Shouldn't be a Good in Goodbye, and Everbody Lies.

~Dean Fujioka~ I mean, seriously, it's History Maker. The best anime theme song EVER. <Yuri!!! on Ice theme song>

~Lauren Aquilina~ King is such a deep song.

~Black Veil Brides~ *Some Explicit Songs*

Does Twenty Øne Piløts' older albums count? like Vessel and the ones before that? If so, those.

~Miia~ Dynasty is such a beautiful song.

~B52s~ older band

Well that's all I can think of rn.

-Of Monsters and Men (folk pop/alternative?)

This band is really good (at least the songs I've heard). They're actually Icelandic, and they sing about folk songs. The lead singer's voice is super pretty, and they are really calming to listen to. Some of their songs are Dirty Paws, King and Lionheart, and Little Talks.

-Jose Gonzales(alternative?)

I really like his voice, and his songs are good for studying. He did the majority of the music for Walter Mitty (love that movie!). I've only listened to a few of his songs, but my sister really likes him. My favorites are This Is How We Walk On the Moon and Step Out.

Hey, Sprocket, have you heard the song Particles? It's a collaboration between the lead singer of Of Monsters and Men and Olafur Arnalds, who is freaking amazing! You should listen to it!

I actually have yet to listen to their music, but I don't think anyone except my mom has heard of Hard Corps, and she only because of work. Supposedly they do a sort of combination of rap and rock, like some Gorillaz songs.

I think Walk Off The Earth might be better known than what you're looking for... I don't know.

Guy Klucevsek is one of my and my mom's favorite artists. I think he's significant in his genre, but considering that's accordion music, he should qualify for this. It takes five accordionists to play pieces he can play alone. I'm particularly fond of Larsong, Ratatatatouille, and The Swan And The Vulture. Go listen to those. The recorded version of Ratatatatouille is better than the live performance (there's a chorus which emphasizes the rhythm and melody).

All of those recommended artists sound great! I'll have to look into them.

@Viola?, Guy Klucevsek should definitely count - the Punch Borthers are similar, but because so few people listen to bluegrass or accordian, you're good.
