Audition tips!

I'm auditioning for something called Jr. Districts. It's a music competition/festival type thing, where you audition in front of a judge, who gives you a score based on how well you play. The players for each instrument that score the highest are chosen to be in the Jr. Districts band with other people from different towns. They can also put you into the orchestra or jazz band. At some point we find out if we got in, and if we did, we play in a festival in March. I'm not sure if this is only in my state/region. Has anyone else heard of it?

Anyway, the reason I'm telling you all this is because I'm TERRIFIED! I love playing the flute and I really care about doing well at my audition, but I've never auditioned for anything before. I'm taking private lessons, which is really helping me, and I've been practicing hard, but the audition is on December 2nd, and I'm worried that I won't be ready in time. Does anyone have any audition tips? Even if you've auditioned for a play or something involving singing, what helped you not to be nervous?

 There's an Audtion for Orchestra thread on Chirp at Cricket. It has some helpful tips. Here's an excerpt:

The best advice would be just to
practice and practice as much as you can, but take a night off the day before.
Then, when you get there, just relax and play like you would in practice.

I used to play the flute, *glances guiltily at dusty case* so just relax, breathe, and tell yourself that you'll do fine, and you did fine. Practice as much as you can, and just have fun!

Heyyyy, I am too! I got into Jr. Districts last year and it was a great experience. I doubt we live in the same state, but if we do maybe we'll see each other!

@Zeus- Cool! I’m glad I’m not the only one that’s heard of it! Good luck this year!

@Quill- Thanks so much!

Practise, practise, practise until you get tired of the song. There is nothing worse than turning up to an audition under-rehearsed or unconfident. Just relax, be yourself and give it all you've got. When you arrive to the audition there might be a point when you want to give up, you can't do it and you have major stage fright. That's usually right before you audition. Just take a deep breath and play how you practised. I know you'll do great; tell us how you do!

I agree with the others: practice!!! You can never practice too much. And if you mess up, (which I'm sure you WON'T becuase you're AMAZING) just keep going. Nobody knows your piece!

Hope I helped! :)

Hey everyone! I know that no one will probably see this, but I wanted to say thanks to everyone who gave me advice and wished me good luck. I also wanted to tell you that I GOT IN!!! I'm super excited and a little bit shocked. I didn't want to get my hopes up too high because I did horrible on the sight reading part of the audition and I'm not sure how many points it was worth. When I found out that I got in I was amazed, and I'm so glad that I did!!! I got part 2 seat 2, and although that probably isn't one of the best places to get in, I still got in, so I'm happy! I was actually suprisingly unnervous (Is that a word?) during the audition. I guess all my practice paid off.

Congratulations, Dragonrider! Yes, practice does pay off. I'm not sure what instrument you play, but in violin sections the first two players of each part are the best in the whole group. In other words, Seats 1 and 2 Second Violin, are right after Concertmaster and his/her standmate. So you may have a very important part.
