Poetry Challenge!

Poetry Challenge!

So, last summer, I made this thread called the Poetry Challenge. Lots of people joined, and it really took off. It died eventually, but since so many of you are interested in doing it again, I’m rebooting it!

For those of you who haven’t participated, here’s how it works:

Each round will have a main theme and an optional prompt. The theme should be a broader topic since we’ll all be writing a lot of poetry about that one theme. The prompt can be anything, really; a topic, a poetry technique, a random sentence that pops into your head. The person who posts the theme and prompt will be the ‘announcer’ for that round. They can participate in the challenge as well.

Each round lasts a week. Once the theme and prompt have been posted, everyone starts writing. The goal is to write and post a poem a day, but if you miss a day or two, or even six or seven, it’s okay. The purpose of this is to challenge ourselves and improve our writing, and of course, to have fun. So no stress. :-) Of course, if you're extra inspired one day, you can write and post more than one poem.

At the end of the week, everyone will place a vote for the most inspiring poem. Once everyone has voted, the announcer will count the votes and announce the winner, who will then become the announcer for the next round.

Make sense?

The first person to post is the Announcer for the first round. As soon as they post the theme and prompt, we can start.

I think for this round I'm going to plan out rough ideas for poems beforehand, since when I jumped into the last Poetry Challenge I was unprepared and didn't manage to write much poetry at all. XP

Tomorrow sounds good to me. I'm just gonna see what inspiration comes...

I like this idea but I'm not very good at poetry. Could I write a short story instead?

Well, poetry is kind of the point, but if you wanted, maybe you could make a separate thread similar to this where people post short stories instead of poetry? Would that be okay?

Author's Note: This week's poems are going to be a series. The titles of every poem will be lyrics taken from the song Mr. Tambourine Man by Bob Dylan which is a very peaceful song in my opinion. I'll try my hardest to convey the feeling of peace in these poems but I apologize if they don't seem to follow the theme very well.

i'm not sleepy and there is no place i'm going to

i'll always love the warmth of the two o'clock sun

the lethargy of the dog days

remember when we

were young and we'd lie to our parents

fighting heavy eyelids

drowsy and only half-awake

now, older, in late afternoon

we bask with the cats in the sun

making up for lost time asleep

my heartbeat is slow, a perfect metronome

window pane shadows casting lines on my face

and when my eyes close

i lay awake

feeling everything and nothing all

at once

M’kay here we are! Is it ok if I do the theme one day, and a prompt the next?
Calm after the storm-
as we lay
down our weapons
(your sharp claws
that bring long-hurting tears
my sharp words
that bring long-flowing tears)
i become
aware
of my
ragged
breath
in
out
cycle back in
calming down
slowly
and you hide
those hurt eyes
behind slowly closing
lashes
long black
glimmering with pain
then slowly
we smile
for this
is just
foolish childish
war
endless hours spent
fighting-yelling-hoping-betraying
when we could have been
smiling
if only
you understood
but it doesn’t matter
we could play this game forever
because i know your strategy
and you can’t knock me down
so instead
we’ve had the storm
let’s have the calm
we've had the war
let’s have the peace

Argh, why does the spacing always come out wierd when I copy and paste from Google Docs?

Yesterday:

Haiku

If the sky should fall

Well, isn't that what rain is?

The sun will come back.

Soul

Endless, eternal

Changing, ephemeral

New, but old

Both silver, blue, and gold

Endless, eternal

Changing, ephemeral.

And today!

The Great American Poem

There once was a poet who listened to her brother

She wrote a limerick with bile and bubble

Then she looked back at what she had writ

And felt she might be sick over it

Oh, darn it, darn that little brother.

evening's empire has returned into sand

rusted golden glow over the hills

like if honey and cinnamon shone over your skin

i kissed the sun goodnight this evening and

she kissed me back

telephone wires split the tangerine skies

and blackbirds, seeming to be suspended and still

as they fade into the horizon

melt into the citrine sunset

the nocturnal creatures stir, as do i

unlike the rest of the world

it is not our time to

settle

(August 15, 2018 - 9:46 pm)

the ancient empty street's too dead for dreaming

lavender light looks good on you

old town, after people close their curtains

chalky moths flock

to dim streetights, half burned-out

the cobblestones wind in haphazard lines

we always hoped for something lucid

when we closed our eyes

but woke up with only

faint memories
