As for suggestions, my first tip would be to draw simple shapes and build the body around them. Like for example, drawing a triangle shape for the chest, long ovals for limbs, and circles for the joints. (You don't have to use those particular shapes, but you should think about the basic shapes that the different parts of the body look like.) It's useful to start with basic shapes so you can really think about the anatomy of the character, and fix things without having to erase a bunch of detail. I'd also recommend drawing bodies before you draw clothes, especially if the character is in a dress or robe. Then there's volume-- remember that you're drawing a 3-D mass, not a flat shape.
