Hamilton tidbits, I

Hamilton tidbits, I guess.

I've been learning about the Revolutionary War in school recently, and it's fun because it ties in with Hamilton, and... yeah. So I'm making this thread so I can share some of the background bits and pieces from the musical.

John Adams?

I know him

That can't be

He's that little guy who spoke to me

All those years ago

What was it, '85?

That poor man, they're going to eat him alive

John Adams was the American ambassador to England around this time, trying to convince Britain to withdraw their troops from American soil and let trade ships go to the British colonies in the Caribbean. He wasn't successful, because America couldn't pay their debts and King George wasn't willing to comply with the demands as long as it still owed him money.

Two Virginians and an immigrant walk into a room

Diametrically opposed, foes

They emerge with a compromise

Having opened doors that were previously closed

Hamilton, as the Secretary of the Treasury, had a debt plan where the national government would assume the state's debts. The Southern states (from Virginia downward) didn't like it because they'd already paid their debts, so it was unfair to them, but it was kinda necessary to pay the debts so the country's money could return to a better value. But the opposition from Virginia, led by James Madison, was strong enough that the assumption plan wasn't moving forward. And the compromise they emerged with wasn't actually 'The capital will move to the Potomac and the debt plan will go through' - Madison didn't even agree to vote for it, just to scale back his opposition so it had a chance to go through. And Hamilton agreed to use his influence to move the capital to where it is now.

There's a letter on my desk from the President

Haven't even put my bags down yet

Sally, be a lamb, darling, won't you open it?

So I haven't researched this or anything, but I'm 99.9% sure that 'Sally' is referring to Sally Hemings, Jefferson's slave that he had an affair with.

Also, not really connected to Hamilton, but Jefferson was kind of strange in that he loved to spend money and buy things, and he kept meticulous accounts of everything he bought, but apparently didn't notice (or ignored) the fact that he was slowly sliding into debt.

I don't know if you found that as interesting as I did.

You can post random Hamilton trivia on this thread

Or random history trivia, it doesn't really matter

Also I'm sort of taking an unofficial hiatus for a week or so. I'll probably still post, but less, because my cousins are visiting (yay!) and I'll be busy with that.

I've been reading Commen Sense by Thomas Paynes

Some men say that I'm intense or I'm insane

Commen Sense was a pamphlet written by Thomas Paynes, encouraging colonists to rebel against Great Britain. It focused on the individual liberties that every person is entitled to, such as independence, which was being denied to colonists by Great Britain. It caused many people to become Patriots.

Another fact from Angelica's awesome Schuyler Sisters solo:

And when I meet Thomas Jefferson,
I'ma compel him to include women in the sequel!

She actually did! Angelica met Thomas Jefferson in France or something, and he was writing a sequel to the French equivalent of the Constitution and she worked with him to include women in it. I'm not 100% clear on all the facts, I read it in a book somewhere, but I thought it was really cool.

*giggles mischievously*

There is a lot of solid evidence that John Laurens and Alexander Hamilton were a thing, though some historians argue that they were just good friends. But read this excerpts from Hamiltons letters to Laurens and tell me they were just GoOd fRiENdS.

Cold in my professions, warm in my friendships, I wish, my Dear Laurens, it might be in my power, by actions rather than words, to convince you that I love you. I shall only tell you that ’till you bade us Adieu, I hardly knew the value you had taught my heart to set upon you.

In spite of Schuylers black eyes, I have still a part for the public and another for you (...) Adieu, be happy, and let friendship between us be more than a name

Like a jealous lover, when I thought you slighted my caresses, my affection was alarmed and my vanity piqued.

However, friendships like these were pretty commen in the 1700s-1800s. But on the other hand it is known that they had a very close relationship. I could go into more detail, but I'm lazy.

The relationship between Laurens and Hamilton will never be proved to be more than just a friendship, but I'm just gonna say they at least had feelings for each other, because I love this ship and I can't stand to lose it.

DID YOU KNOW that these letters were discovered by Hamilton's son, who was coincidentally named John, who then went on to have a son names Laurens? Also, to be fair, these letters HEAVILY implied that there was something between Ham and Laurens- even Lin Manuel Miranda wrote about it in his notes of his book Hamilton: A Revolution.

I also love this ship, and I may or may not have written a poem/song for the show about it based on the sentence 'cold in my professions, warm in my friendships'...
