Songwriting thread

as a lot of you guys know, I'm a songwriter! And I don't know if there are really any other songwriters here, but even if you've never written a song, it's always a good idea to try! It's a lot more fun than it seems.

so this thread can just be chords or lyrics! And if you can figure out piano or bass lines, you can put notes too. Whatever you'd like. I hope this thread gets some attention, since songwriting is an amazing way to express emotions.

Have fun, see y'all soon <3

YES OH MY ACTUALLY REALLY-

So, fun fact: I write songs all the time! More often or not they're kinda impromptu, improvised sorta things, and I'll just hum/sing them and do a quick voice recording if I like it, or kinda just be messing around with chords or rhythm on one of my instruments (usually the piano or drums but idk sometimes I'll use whatever I can get my hands on) and settle into something fun.

I LITERALLY HAVE SO MANY RANDOM DOCS FULL OF UNFINISHED LYRICS THOUGH-

And even more low-quality voice memos on my phone from when inspiration suddenly hits... Anyway, I'll post some more recent lyrics fragments here for y'all to check out later, if you're interested.

I've actually been getting really into songwriting recently! After spending years writing primarily freeform poetry, I've found I really enjoy working within meter and rhythm, and exploring music theory.

These are lyrics to a lullaby sort of thing I wrote earlier today. It isn't amazing, but I'm pretty proud of it.

Let the sun soak into your skin, my dear.

I know you're scared, but you're safe here.

Go outside and run, feel the wind in your heart

I'll watch you have fun, we'll never be apart

And when the sun has begun to set

I will lead you inside, yet

My love for you is a rose without thorns

If I could give you the world, it would be yours

Let the stars shine into your heart, my dear.

I know you're scared but you're safe here.

Oh, that is so pretty! I love the recurring line and can I totally see it as a lullaby. Also, I love your name!

I've recently gotten interested in songs and lullaby things too, but it's so hard to get lyrics right!

This is something I wrote a while ago - it's supposed to have a slightly eerie tune with a strong but steady rhythm. Does anybody have any title suggestions? I have it down as "To The Woods" but I don't love that.

Come, my friend, to the woods so deep,

Where everything is silent like an endless sleep.

Wait for the night, for the echoing screams

That keep you awake and haunt your dreams.

Come, my friend, to the woods so dark.

Don't worry, we'll welcome you with open arms.

We'll only watch as you tread so far.

We'll only wait as you approach the heart.

Come, my friend, to the woods so grey,

With tendrils of smoke on a foggy day.

Just ignore what the villagers say.

Trust in their prayers that you'll be safe.

Come, my friend, to the woods so dense,

They whisper that no one come's out again.

Venture deep inside if you can.

Watch shadows dance like spirits condemned.

Come, my friend, to the woods so bleak,

Listen to the willows and the branches creak.

Do you hear the song ringing from the crows beak?

Do you hear the forest souls' attempt to speak?

Come, my friend, to the moonlit glade.

Take your time, we can afford to wait.

But we're getting hungry, and debts must be paid.

Answer our call, come meet your fate.

WOAH! That was amazing! I actually read the first couple of verses and then started singing out loud- it was like I had the tune in my head as soon as I read the song. I'd honestly call it something like "Come" or something cool like "Ballad of the Woods" or "Song of the Woods" or "The Wood's Call" but to be honest "To The Woods" is a great title!

:O thanks so much, I don't normally share my songs and poems, so this is very encouraging!

I've been sort of interested in songwriting for a while, but I'm not that great at it :( I did write one that I kind of like, but it's in Spanish...

Does anyone have any tips for trying to think of tunes? Usually whenever I try to make up songs I just make up new lyrics to tunes that I've already heard.

For me, I just kinda write lyrics that seem to flow nicely and give it a melody after. Sometimes I even do chords before the melody. Definitely make a notebook just for lyrics though! It always comes in handy :)

Mmm, okay. A notebook just for lyrics does sound useful.

This has nothing to do with anything, but do you have a particular type of music genre that you like to write songs in, like country or pop?

I'd say they usually are more pop-ish than anything, although most of them are sad. Actually, all of them are, because happy songs are harder to write more deeply about. So it's Tate Mcrae style if you know who that is :) Kinda Taylor Swift ish too, like Treacherous or Forever and Always.

I found some song-writing buddies who go to the same school as me! (sadly we're all juniors or seniors tho :/). Strangely enough, we got to know each other on the bus ride home from Science Olympiad lol.
