Secrets thrive in darkness.  Everyone knows that.  When night falls, it becomes much easier to hide and to hunt.  Humanity sleeps during the night, to blind themselves to the shadowy truths of the world and live in sunlit ignorance.  You are no exception.  Or are you, stranger?  To set foot in this place is to stand not beyond or before the veil, but within it.

You find yourself in a grayish darkness, not quite deep enough to obscure your sight but enough to send shivers down your spine.  The space around you is vast, an atrium of sorts, decrepit but ornate with peeling victorian wallpaper and a staircase that towers and twists into the unknown.  Pale rays of light shine through unseen corners, illuminating the dust floating through the air.  There is no ceiling, you realize, looking up to to a broken dome from which feathers and dead leaves slowly but surely descend as the wind whistles.  Blackbirds huddle in the rafters, their shadowy figures almost but not quite invisible.  Their caws sound more like words.  What is this place, and how did you get here?

You wish to leave?  Very well then, depart from me.  But know that if you do, you will forget this place and never learn the answers to your questions.  Oh, you cannot resist secrets?  I am not surprised.  Tell me who exactly you are, and our your tale will begin.
