Mystery Inn Ski Lodge

You are on CB, minding your own business, until you spotted this Ski Lodge. Not unusual in the least. You click on it, of course, and begin to read it, the question lingering in your mind: Should I join?

Suddenly, you receive an email. How odd, you think. An email? So you go into your email and click into it, and spot a typed up message sent to you under the names Secret, Rune, and Enigma. Cautiously, you read it, scrolling down slowly and taking in each word, hopefully. It reads:

You have received an invitation to Mystery Inn, the most prestigious and arguably the most sophisticated place to stay. Everything here is new, just for you! We will take around 15 guests maximum. AEs and CAPTCHAs are allowed. Each set of guests receive a certain code as well, in order for you to be eligible to enter. You must translate the following to enter the inn: - - - - -. Hopefully, you have a - Message Interpreter with you. For those of you unlucky ones who don’t have one, make your own interpretation of the message. Prologue

At the end of the street in the most populous city is an untouched building, completely unnoticed by the bypassers and pedestrians, all attracted to the various other shops and restaurants. It was what they’ve always wanted, since the Message was delivered about the Entity. The building was so guarded that there was a password that protected it, and its key changed every moment. There were security cameras that covered every corner of the ceiling there. All of this because of the Entity.

Secret, Rune, and Enigma have always been content with this arrangement. It was vital that no one knew about the Entity and what sacrifices had to be made in order to keep everything balanced. No one could know, except them three. And so the building was always kept private. Until one day…

Secret sat down at the front desk, with Rune and Enigma standing next to them. “Why don’t we try something different?” they started.

“For what?” Rune asked, though she knew the answer.

“The Entity, I presume?” Enigma said.

Secret gave him a small nod. “We can’t just stand around here doing nothing,” they explained. “We must…start making sacrifices.”

“What kind? And how?” Rune asked.

“You know what kind,” Secret answered. “And as for how,” they continued. “I was thinking that we could…turn this building into an inn.”

“An inn!?” Enigma exclaimed, completely taken aback. “Why, aren’t we supposed to keep the Entity and the Message a secret?”

“Just put a lock on where it's kept,” Secret explained, their voice tired. “And we will finally hear something other than each other’s voices! Imagine that!”

“Opening it to tourists,” Rune said disapprovingly, shaking her head. “I didn’t think it’d ever come to that.”

“Not tourists, guests,” Secret corrected. “And what could possibly go wrong?”

Ooh, intriguing! Extremely curious about this "Entity" (oh wait, I'm not supposed to know about it...pretend I didn't say that...)

"What could possibly go wrong?" ohhh famous last words! These three are really interesting, and I'm sensing some cool worldbuilding with the Entity and Message. Can't wait for this to start!!

Day 1, Part 1

A whirlwind of all sorts of different colors merged in front of Silver Crystal’s vision. The myriad of colors warped around her, most of the colors being tones of cornflower blue, though a wide range of blues and purples could be seen. All the colors whirring around made Silver rather dizzy, and it was quite noisy, with sounds of beeping and the ticking of clocks. When she thought that it would never stop, it finally did.

Silver found herself in front of a grand white building with enormous clear windows. There was no door knob or handle that would signal a way to enter in. She looked closer, and saw that there was a keypad next to what seemed to be the door.

What could the password be?, she wondered. After several failed attempts, Silver decided to try the message that she “interpreted”, though she was sure that she was wrong.

So Silver typed in the word “apple”, and to her surprise, it worked! The door glided open, and she stepped inside the lobby. The floor was clean and marble white, with a front desk holding a small lamp ahead. It looked like an office building more than anything.

A woman with dark brown hair and a strange dress with colorful rune-like markings on it stood behind the front desk. When she saw Silver, she nodded and said, “Welcome to Mystery Inn. The other guests are waiting in the lounge room.”

The woman led Silver to a room entrance with its door propped ajar. The woman opened the door and gestured for Silver to enter.

The room was quite large, about as large as a ballroom, with comfy bean bag chairs and sofas in various places. Silver relaxed as she recognized familiar faces, such as Hawkstar, Writing, and Darkvine.

“Hi, can I join you?” Silver asked a group of three guests, who were Sempreverde, Mizuki, and GloomyBear.

“Of course!” Sempreverde replied, and the other two nodded as well.

The lounge room was filled with the lively chatter of guests as they discussed their arrival here and their impressions so far.

“Attention every guest!” The sound of a loud voice echoed across the room as everyone turned to look. It belonged to the woman who was at the front desk earlier. She stood next to two others, all of them with unique outfits.

“Let us hosts introduce ourselves,” the woman continued. “I am Rune, she/her pronouns.”

“I am Enigma, he/him. It is a pleasure to meet you all,” the person standing next to Rune announced. He was tall, and had dark skin and slightly curly short black hair. Half of his face was covered with a white theater-like mask that had random numbers decorated throughout, and he wore a crisp white high v-collared shirt.

“And I’m Secret, they/them,” the third host said, smiling brightly and bowing a little. They had sleek ebony hair, and most of their face was covered with a white masquerade-like mask. They wore a black shirt with silver square buttons. “Why don’t all of you introduce yourselves as well?”

The guests went in a circle introducing themselves, and when they were finished, Rune spoke up.

“We would like to give you a tour of the facility, or inn, to give you a good idea of where you can and can’t go and just overall what this place looks like,” Rune said.

“Otherwise, you would get lost with this building’s infinite amount of doors and floors,” Secret added, laughing a little.

“So without further ado, please follow us as we take you on the tour. If you do not follow closely with the group, you will most definitely get lost and who knows what will happen then,” Rune said, with the smallest hint of a smile.

The group of guests followed as the three hosts led them away from the lounge room and into the hallway, which was as clean and office-like as the lobby. After a while of walking, the hosts stopped at a door.

“This room is the dining room,” Enigma announced, opening the door and gesturing inside.

The guests peered into the dining room, which had a long mahogany table with plenty of chairs on either side. The room as a whole had a somewhat old-fashioned vibe, with old paintings on the wall that seemed to depict misty mountains and valleys and rocks etched with strange markings. Lyric thought for some reason that the dining room reminded her of Rune.

“Across is the kitchen,” Secret said, smiling and opening the door to the kitchen. The kitchen seemed extremely futuristic, with technologically-advanced kitchen appliances. The kitchen had colors of black and neon green and neon blue, much like the vibe of Enigma, Cypress noticed. “You likely won’t ever need to come in here, since you’ll eat in the dining room.”

A few more steps and Enigma stopped, pointing to another door which was white and seemed to be wooden. “The gym,” he said as he opened it, and the guests looked in to see a completely normal-looking gym with everything you needed. The color scheme was mainly monochrome, though there were a few fancy decorations that seemed to be made of gold. Scuttles thought of Secret upon seeing the gym.

The hosts continued ahead, and stopped at another door, which appeared to be a smooth shiny teakwood door etched with markings, but from another angle, it seemed as if made of clear glass filled with neon green numbers, and from yet another angle, it seemed black and white and lined with gold.

“Welcome to the library,” Rune said, nodding. “Go ahead and take a look around.”

Excited, the guests walked in and looked around. The library was big and grand, and was unlike the previous rooms, which seemed to have themes of either Secret, Rune, or Enigma. This room seemed like a combination of all of them, with old paintings, futuristic staircases and walkways, and a handful of black and white and gold accessories.

The guests wandered around the library, each finding exactly the book they’ve always wanted to read and more. Yet what caught the eyes of the guests the most was one particular bookshelf labeled “Mystery Books”. Instead of the typical genre of mystery as someone would expect, each book had a riddle or puzzle of some sort on the cover that the reader would have to solve in order to read inside.

Darkvine picked up a book with a faded green cover with a black outline. She attempted to open it at first, but found the pages were firmly stuck together. On the cover was a riddle that read: What starts with T, ends with T, and is full of T?

The riddle was a pretty common one, and at once, she knew that the answer was teapot. She puzzled over how she would answer the riddle, before deciding to write on the cover with her finger the word teapot. It worked, and she could open the book with ease. Written inside was a poem:

A simple and fundamental

Kitchen appliance

Not merely what it seems—

In fact, a rich treasure of

History, art,

Tradition, culture

The essence of

Tranquility

Thus is the mystery

Of the teapot

Darkvine smiled and put the book back as the hosts called the guests back. “You may browse through the library all you want when we’re done with the tour,” Secret said. “Now, we’ll make one more stop before you can settle down in your bedrooms, then go from there.”

“So, here’s the recreational room,” Rune said, opening the door and gesturing inside. It was rather large, only slightly smaller than the lounge room, and had all sorts of board games and cards and the like, with several comfy chairs to sit on. There was also a popcorn machine in the corner.

“Are we allowed to take from the popcorn machine?” Wildsong asked.

“Ah, I should mention that,” Secret said. “You are allowed to take popcorn from the popcorn machine…if you can unlock the password on it.”

The guests peered at the popcorn machine, which had a three-number password lock on it, along with a piece of paper taped to the front. The paper read: A box without hinges, key, or lid, yet golden treasure inside is hid.

“That concludes our tour for now,” Enigma said. “We will explore more later, but right now, you may settle into your bedrooms and meet at the lounge room in about half an hour.”

The guests agreed and went their separate ways to their bedrooms to unpack.

~~~
Feel free to solve the popcorn riddle and figure out the three numbers to unlock the popcorn for your Ski Lodge self and other guests.
